    No they didn't.
But we could buy the whole kit if we wanted to.
Gloves, shoes, helmet and racingsuit to a cost of
    approx. Euro 3500

    Re: SLR Pictures from IDIADA

Basically no one liked the SLR, its just a lightweight SL55, they all went for the CGT. BTW, the SLR is Germany's Sports car of the Year, 81,000 people can't be wrong...

That last pic...the SLR is worth its weight in gold. I know many people disagree, but its a classic.

    Re: SLR Pictures from IDIADA

    IDIADA Spain 16 August

    Mercedes-Benz SLR Mclaren

    612 PS ( recertified with 626 PS )
    780 Nm

    Compression ratio: 8.8

    5.5 Liters

Boot volume 275 Liters,( compartment inside car 40 Liters )

    Performance.

    0-100: 3.8s
    0-200: 10.6s
    0-300: 28.8s

    Top speed: 334 km/h

    Cd value: 0.38

    Weight of car: 1768kg*

1.* (Weight according to EC reg.
    90% fuel,7kg equipment and driver 68kg)

    Drivers report:
Two SLR,one black and one silver both completely unmasked.

First the Handling Pad: We started of by driving the SL500,SL55 and then on to the SLR for comparisons sake.
The difference between the SL500 and the SL55 to the SLR is like comparing a GT3 to an S500 if you consider the steering feel and balance.

Handling Track: A taxi ride with one of the Test drivers from Mclaren. AMAZING!

High Speed Oval: We got to drive all the cars for two laps with a speed of 200km/h on the banks and 250km/h on the straights.

Next a taxi ride in the SLR at full speed!! 330km/h on the straights.
The car seemed very stable and composed.

    To sum it up:
The car accelerates violently of the line and then keeps on going to the max accompanied by a thunderous exhaust/engine roar inside the cabin.
Brake pedal feel: artificial and very difficult to moderate.
Steering feel: very precise but too nervous at high speeds.
Overall design of the car is excellent for a "GT",but it can`t match the Carrera GT for visual drama.
That said ,it doesn`t have the looks of a real "Supercar" and with the new mini SLR (SLK) coming soon and the facelifted SL later with a similar front end as the SLR I think
there is a real chance the SLR won`t be seen as anything more than just a normal Mercedes to the average person on the street.
Worst design faults on the car has to be the standard 18 inch rims and the steering wheel, same one as in the SL55.
Noise level inside the car at acceleration and at high speeds can be wearing.
Exhaust sound outside the car sounds like an SL55,only more nervous and much louder.
    Excellent grip and balance.

Engine: Monstrous engine with excellent torque.
Steering: Extremely direct,a bit nervous at high speeds.
Brakes: Artificial feel, difficult to moderate otherwise excellent performance.
    Balance: Excellent grip and balance.
Looks: Overall impression, best looking GT but lacks the visual drama of the Carrera GT and other Supercars.Don`t get me wrong, "It looks Awesome".

THE CARS WE DROVE WERE NOT PRODUCTION CARS,THEY STILL HAVE SOME DEVELOPMENT TO DO
    BEFORE DELIVERIES START.

The first cars will be delivered in the end of March or end of April 2004.

Price has not been revealed yet but is expected to be in the region of Euro 350.000 excl.VAT

SORRY! NO CAMERAS WERE ALLOWED AT THE IDIADA FACILITY.

CF, your report is better than any extended magazine report. What a day must have been, again, thanks for sharing.
Just one question, how's the power is delivered, is it devasting, or more like a very powerful but progressive way of delever?

    Re: SLR Pictures from IDIADA

The power delivery is somewhat similar to that of an SL55 AMG
but accompanied by a louder exhaust note.

To give a better explanation, it doesn't accelerate as fast as you would expect.

I can't really give an opinion about the feeling of the Carrera GT since we weren't allowed to drive the car.
The handling of the SLR is basically fool proof because of all the electronic aids.
If you plan to use either car as a daily driver I think the SLR would be the better choice;ground clearance, automatic and ESP among other things, but since I don't mind driving the GT with the concessions to comfort you would have to make, I could do without the SLR and drive the Carrera GT as a daily driver instead.

81000 people who never drove one...

I really can't say if the SLR is good or bad compared to the CGT simply because I didn't drive them for comparison.
But if I compare a SL55 to a 996 Turbo, I tend to believe that the SLR is more of a comfort oriented supersports car and the CGT is more the track oriented supersports car.
As a daily driver, I'd choose a S65 AMG or the rumored upcoming SL65 AMG and even a 996 Turbo with powerkit can be an excellent daily driver.

    Re: SLR Pictures from IDIADA

RC, the vast majority of people will never get a chance to drive one, even fewer will own one. Not everyone spends 250,000GBP+ on a car.

Its then down to aesthetics. I know for a fact that you don't like it, and prefer CGT, to each his own. Personally, the CGT looks like a Toyota MR2 on steroids. Not special at all. Whereas the SLR maybe "just another Mercedes" but its stunning, and unique from the rest of the pack, in that it is freakin Enzo quick! If you look at some of the articles on the SLR and are a Mercedes fan, you will absolutely find it gold, every feature on that car serves a purpose. I know Porsche will always be an emotional attachment to you, but thats exactly how I feel about Mercedes. Its totally acceptable, and I respect your views, after all this isn't a BMW forum

I know you keep saying thr E55 is your "stopgap car" but there are a lot of people who would kill to have 500bhp Mercedes, you know why you de-badged your car don't you?

At the end of the day, if money was no object, I'd take the CGT and the SLR, but honestly, 200,000GBP+ on one car, is wastage to me, even for the SLR. There are better causes and better cars. e.g. SL55/S600/CL65, even E500! You can leave those cars anywhere, well almost, but try going grocery shopping in an SLR!

    Re: SLR Pictures from IDIADA

Well, it can be called a GT, but for me looks a nicer and more muscled SL55AMG
If I had too much money i would've buy it, but personally, I would prefer to get a real GT as a 575 maranello plus a SL55AMG!
