Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

So I have not logged in for two days, come back, see 30 unread posts in the "918" thread.  I think to myself, Nick has shared his latest experience with the 918 along with outstanding pictures.  Result: 28 posts about suitcases, helmet and tuck/untuck shirts, two posts about the 918 and they are from Nick himself.  To summarize: Rennteam at its best. smiley

Nice - those bolts sticking out the right side hold on the brake calipers.  On the GT3 and GT4 the uprights are notoriously badly tapped, so the threads commonly strip (many people replace with studs to prevent this).  Looks like these may be entirely different/better than the 991/981 parts.

Here is a pic of the unicorn. Actually THE unicorn.

I knew about this car for the longest time but this is the first time a pic has been snapped of it.

    Here is the second one.

    Yes.

Porsche was quite adamant about customers can only choose from their selections of leather. But the rules can be bent.

When I was at the factory to see my own car, I was told someone is asking to do white leather interior. The customer in question bought 4 918s and is from the Middle East. At that time Porsche was still doing validation on the feasibility of tanning the leather white.

Guess that customer got his wish. And he might have 2 of his with white leather.

As for the price to have white leather, it is 6 digit US.

The first car posted is white on white, which is exactly how I was told about it. I did not know about the second car though.

Well more information has surfaced. The second car did not come out of Zuffenhausen with white leather, Masory did the aftermarket job.

So the white on white stays as the unicorn.

Factory price for any kind of "custom" job is understandable. You want something out of regular line, well, bring your fat wallet in game indecision

For special car like 918, I would never call Mansory or some similar shop to do aftermarket job. Interior leather (out of factory) should be delivered by fine Italian leather manufacturer, and not some Mansory, TechArt and similar toyish tuners.

Even though Mansory makes some ugly stuff, they are a top notch in CF work and I'm sure they can handle excellent quality leather and upholstery.

If I'm not mistaken, Glickenhaus's race car is constructed from CF supplied by Mansory. And honestly, I wouldn't exactly expect Porsche to be experts in leather or supply the best stuff anyway.

I have little doubt that Masonry has access to greatly superior leather as well as leatherworkers than the factory. If I wanted something bespoke and didn't care about resale, a bespoke leather interior company will almost certainly do a better job with higher quality material than the factory which is beholden to certain suppliers and can only do things certain ways.

I'm not a fan of aftermarket tuning, never have been. Techart did some leather work for Porsche Exlusive in the past but I think these times are over for a very long time. Mansory is not my thing at all, I would actually feel embarrassed to drive a Mansory tuned car. yes angry

Masonry tuned? Totally agree. Not my thing at all. The body kits and colours are atrocious. BUT we're not talking about body kits etc., there are many shops that can do leather work that would put pretty much any factory to shame. Same goes for paint work.

Are there any factories that still wet sand and clay the cars as they are being painted?

If you don't car about factory original and just want the best PTS and Leather to Sample possible, it won't be from the factory.

Yup, just because you don't like their designs doesn't mean they don't create high-end product or aren't capable of sourcing it. The best materials and technology doesn't always come from the factory. Some super expensive development stuff, sure, but a lot of stuff comes from suppliers and craftsman that anyone can contract if the price is right.

If you want the best white leather seats in the world, I assure you there are source beyond Porsche and that Mansory can get it done. Hell, a lot of people can get it done. Do you think some guy spending $1M restoring a $10M Ferrari isn't getting the best stuff money can buy that's at the very least equal to what Porsche would supply?

I had a sit in a Techart Magnum (Cayenne) at Geneva once and it had a custom interior from some posh furniture setup.  It was a work of art - beautiful - and the leather was leagues above what Porsche use..

Pretty much impossible since Techart is using the same source. Smiley Smiley
