    Ferrari says NO to Dino

In the latest issue of Car magazine, Ferrari's deputy managing director Amedeo Felisa and Massimo Fumarola, the product development director, gave some insight to Ferrari's future...

    So, will Ferrari expand?
Definitely not. Even though it will make more than 5000 cars this year, and is selling in ever increasing numbers like Russia and China, Ferrari must remain an exclusive brand. "Porsche is the benchmark because they have the best balance sheet in the world," admits product development director Massimo Fumarola. "we may increase volumes but only very slightly. Selling cars in more territories doesn't undermine exclusivity."

    So no new Dino then?
Emphatically no. The possibility of a smaller, less expensive Ferrari has been looked at - especially as the current 'entry level' model is the 118,500 GBP F430 - but, says deputy managing director Amedeo Felisa, "It would destroy the entire model range and proposition. We think that the way things are configured now is correct, thought we want to bring down waiting lists to around 15 months."

Will the next Enzo be chasing the Bugatti Veron's mega output?
"What is power?" says Felisa. "Its a big discussion internally. Ferrari is about overall performance, not simply about the greatest horsepower. We wont just do big power for marketing purposes. We are looking at the possibility of smaller, more compact engines, and at supercharging. But a V12 will always head the range." Legislative changes and ever tightening emissions regulations have prompted Ferrari to investigate forced induction.

Has the Bugatti's 'dual shift gearbox' (DSG) sent Ferrari back to the drawing board?
"We are looking into it," says Fumarola. "We definitely believe that its the future. But it takes time to develop properly." Adds Felisa: "If you want the best balance between comfort and speed, then its the right way to go. It would fit with the character of the 612."

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

I completely agree. I'm glad the threw out that rumor of an entry-level front engine dino... would of hurt Ferrari more than it would have helped.

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

    that's what I said before, Ferrari doesn't need a "cheap" one ..

    Merry Christmas to everybody

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

I agree too ( YOU HEAR PORSCHE DECISION MAKERS???)
but i am afraid in the end they are going to produce the new Dino.. A friend Ferrari dealer from abroad told me before 2 months that the new Dino will be produced sooner or later...

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

Leave the entry level sports cars to Porsche so Ferrari can keep their reputation clean .

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

Thanks assman, this is great news

My pleasure! I completely agree that this is VERY good news, though I don't like the idea of supercharging or turbocharging on bit......

Unless they can make a car as sensational as the F40. The F40 was so good that people were paying up to FIVE times the retail price!!! When it was new it was the fastert car accelerating, for top speed and around the racetrack!! It was completely in its own class.

Here is a video comparing it to other supercars, old and new.

    Merry Christmas everyone, enjoy.

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

Thanks for the post. Very entertaining.

BTW it is good to know Ferrari is still committed to putting its customers over profit.

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

that's something the dealers in the US never heard off

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

This is the right thing to do. Good decision. Now maybe they can increase supply here in the US for the F430, instead.

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

i agree, this is a very good decision and i'm happy to hear that!!

I don't want my super-car supercharged (forgive the play on words). I think its a sham to have a crappy engine boosted by a supercharger. Look at the Ford GT. Wonderful aesthetics, great heritage, but the engine is a piece of junk (tuned Cobra engine with a supercharger ). One of the things that I love about the Carerra GT and the Enzo is the naturally aspirated engine which is a signature of the company's engineering prowess. The sound, the performance, the weight, the engineering knowhow.

Personally, I think the Veyron engine is a piece of trash. Two welded W8s and 4 turbochargers...sounds like something from a Tuner mag then from a flagship exotic (Not to detract from its perfromance and cooling capabilities which is very impressive).

Although the F40 was a real impressive car (and it was a turbo), its impressive nature was due to its "go-kart" stripped feel. I got a lap in one and it erally is sensational pull, however with the Enzo, I don't think Ferarri should make its flagship exotic anything but Naturally Aspirated.

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

Fumarola mentioned Porsche's balance sheet. I'm just interested what Ferrari's balance sheet looks like at the moment, does anybody have any figures?

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

    Thanks for the post .

Glad that Ferrari is not doing the entry level that would have ruined the image of Ferrari.

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

yes... great news indeed!!! a smaller ferrari would have done a boxster effect on the rest of the range...

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

Someone as the complete article ?? doesnt it talk about the 4x4 system that Ferrari has developed?
I don't now about the Dino maybe they are just saing that so people keep on buying the 430...

Unfortunately no news on the 4x4. I have the magazine, but I don't have a scanner Basically, this extract is a supplement to the cover story: the FXX. CAR gets a few laps with in the FXX. Nothing special really, as they were only passengers in the car. But there are some pretty wicked pictures

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

Well Ferrari doesn't need to do an entry level machine. They are the boutique name for the Fiat empire. As many of the replies in this thread illustrate, Ferrari has carved out a niche for itself catering to customers that value exclusivity above most other aspects. It is totally different situation than Porsche, which actually is an independent manufacturer and has to act accordingly (many seem to not really understand this).

There is no way Ferrari could achieve what they do (F1, Enzo etc.) base on the actual business they generate. Given these sets of circumstances there is less to gain (and perhaps more to lose) in introducing a less expensive car.

I agree, but it's even worse than that. The Ford GT's motor is a supercharged version of their pickup truck motor (maybe the Cobra is too...).

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

Great news. Some very interesting points made. Thanks for posting.
I am overjoyed to hear that they won't be making a new Dino. I didn't like the idea of a 'smaller' Ferrari, and I didn't even like the idea of using the name Dino.

Re: Ferrari says NO to Dino

wow, forced induction-- that is a bombshell, at least I have time to get used to the idea
