The reason why the Jap cars don't have PCM is because first and foremost it is way way behind the Japanese navigation systems. For example for my 997 I have a pioneer system that does the following:
Journey Planner (50 locations in one trip : ) )
3 Day views / birds eye views (full colour - looks like Gran Turismo - includes buildings, goes into tunnels etc etc - amazing!)
voice recognition
30 GB hard drive for music or movie or TV recording
DVD player (for traffic jams I guess)
Mini Disc Player
PCMICI Slot (Photo's or data retrieval)
E-mail & Internet!!!
Live Weather
Television
It tells me where all the decent restaurants are etc etc
I am getting bored with this list - but it is way ahead of PCM
The only downside, its all in Japanese - not a problem for me - I studied Japanese hard : )
Secondly, Japanese characters won't work with PCM and phones here are not GSM
All cars come into Japan as my car ( photo in the page before) but most people put in a navigation system. Mine cost USD 4000.00 including fitting.
LHD or RHD? All manual cars are LHD - Tiptronic cars come both LHD and RHD. The President of Porsche Japan has RHD (tiptronic) but most people remember the old days when the pedals in RHD were so offset you would have your right foot below the steering wheel - not a nice way to drive! The other reason is most Jap's like the cars in LHD because how Porsche builds them! I had a 2003 996 in RHD (tiptronic)my 997 is LHD manual.
In Japan sometimes its better to drive a LHD car because of the narrow streets - you can get very close to the kerb without mashing your alloys AND jump out of the car quickly!
I am in Sydney until Jan but will take some snaps when I get back to Tokyo for anyone who is interested!
Helios - where in Japan are you? What motor are you driving?
