Car Washing Habit/Please share inputs on maintenance tips

A friend of mine who lived in Edinburgh said because of the rather rainy and moist weather in Scotland, cars tend to rust more easily.

A friend of mine shared his maintenance tip with me and said that cars in general would be better off to avoid as much water as possible. Hence he said that the better way to keep cars would be to use wet clothes to wipe your car on a daily basis and spray hose it maybe once a week. He also said to never spray directly at the rims like those car washing houses do but on the tyres more because spraying directly at the rims would mean spraying too much water on the brake discs and it wouldn't be good for the car either.

The weather in HK is defintely great for keeping exotic cars like Porsche. We never snow in the first place so salt and dirt and mud aren't too much of a problem.

Just want some inputs on maintenance and care. In general, does using a hose to spray the RIMS of a car on a daily basis to clean the dirt tend to cause premature rusting on the rotor and brake disc?

The disc always rust to a certain degree and I believe that washing on a daily basis is not a problem as long as you drive it after instead of letting it dry naturally. I believe that from a maintenance POV, it is always better to wash the car in the morning and then drive it right away so the heat can evaporate the water instead of letting it stick with the axles and rotational system overnight. Any input?

Intuitively, the more frequent you wash the car, the more chance for you to cause premature rusting?

I wax my own car with Zymol wax, sheer brilliance...

Re: Car Washing Habit/Please share inputs on maintenance tips

The advice I have been given is that it's better for the disks if the car is driven a lot, rather than stuck in a garage and used occasionally. I think there is a greater chance of rust pitting occuring in the latter case, especially if the car is put away wet.

Check for the huge Car Wash tips thread with Stradale and 69bossnine on the 997 board...

Re: Car Washing Habit/Please share inputs on maintenance tip

The biggest question I have when I'm about to wash mine is how I'm going to dry the rotors. If it's daytime and sunny, no problem:take a short drive. Leter in the day: longer drive.

Meanwhile did you know you can give your BARELY_DIRTY car a sponge bath? Insted of a total hose job soaking everything, use about ten small clean damp towels, turning frequently, followed by dry ones... . MAybe hose the lower dirtier portions of bumpers and doors trying to avoid brakes.

Re: Car Washing Habit/Please share inputs on maintenance tip

I don't recommend using "wet cloths?" to wipe down the car regularly; All you're doing would be to spread the dust around the car, ultimately to act as sandpaper and cause fine scratches. Washing more than once a week may be a little overkill; wash your car on the weekend; give it the full treatment, none of this wiping it with a wet rag - I find the car just looks worse because you are just spreading the dirt. As far as washing the rims with a hose I don't see a problem. As long as you drive the car after you dry it and apply the brakes a few times you'll get the discs sparkling clean No need to worry about rusting! This isn't a Kia, it's a Porsche double galvanized steel
Also, as AJ said, the threads on Car Washing on the 997 board have a lot of useful advice.

Agreed only if the car is BARELY dirty, otherwise you may end up with a worse mess, tons of filthy towels, etc. I live in an apartment so I have to take my car to a do-it-yourself carwash bay ; it takes anywhere from 1/2 hour to one hour or more depending how anal you feel
I'll always hand dry it afterwards.

You may want to see this thread:

Also, I would never wipe my "barely dirty" car w/ sponge or any paper-based wipes. The problem w/ sponge and paper is that they do not pick up the dirt particles, they move them across the clear coat, resulting in swirl marks.

Instead, I keep a bottle of quick shine (spray on lubricant and wax) and a quality microfiber towl in my car all the time. If it calls for a quick wipe down, spray and area then wipe. Always make sure that the towl is clean.

Re: Car Washing Habit/Please share inputs on maintenance tip

Can someone forward me the car washing thread on 997? I searched under the user name but couldn't find the appropriate thread.

I agree, once a week a good hose and clean job would be great. Forget about the wiping during the week and as to rims and rotors, it's ok as long as you drive it after to let the heat evaporate the water. Plus rust proof warranty = 10 years for Porsche. Afterall, this is a Porsche.
