I agree. I think the R was intended primarily for spirited off track and touring purposes unlike the RS. In some ways the R is more akin to the Touring version offered for the 73 RS.

That R was just intended for marketing reasons. To create an adorable, cool, collector car. I don't think that there was a meeting when someone said - we need a spirited off track and touring car. But - they thought what could be an adorable product which supports the myth. Period!

Given how they limited its production I would tend to agree with the marketing objective idea. Maybe an issue of the engineers wanting to create a spirited off track specific version and then the marketing department and the pencil pushers taking that and turning it into a marketing exercise afterwards...

All marketing. They screwed up with only PDK on the 991.1 GT3, tried to make up for it with the 9000rpm engine, got too much slack, tested the waters with a manual GT4, then realized they could sell a "limited" manual GT3 called R with a lot of woha!
Anything that is limited and marginally different seem to sell like hot cakes.

The farmer:That color would NOT work in Sweden if your not a big fan of a very controversial football team based in a suburb of Stockholm called Solna. Pro that car in south part of Stockholm and that car would be no more.....

Here is a PTS R that has just arrived at my dealer . It goes to someone who has already an R in GT Silver . He wanted another one in PTS and confort seats with the R lining . Some people manage to get what they want 
There was another R , that I am not allowed to photographe for the moment . The only thing I can say, is that it has different color rims on each side ( one side blue and side one red ) + other things and that it comes like that from the factory 
When allowed I will post photos .

Agreed...I love these colors too but I don't "get" the Sport Classic at all. For me, this was the biggest rip-off from Porsche.

I love the looks of it. I agree the hardware could be more special, but the looks are just about perfect for a 997.
