    996 Turbo Day

    What a great day. Me and a friend of mine took two Turbos for some high speed runs and great mountain road, it was a blast.
    We've made several high speeds runs starting from 2*, 3* and 3* gear from 60Kph to 270Kph, and the silver car was always able to pull away almost one car distance from the seal grey although both cars are bone stock.

    After the highway speed runs we went to a mountain road where the World Portuguese rallye use to take place.
    We were taking the Turbos near the limit and even so the PSM only kicked one time. Car felt planted, but the weight could be felt.

    Next time we will have company from another friend who has an Mercedes E 55 AMG ST with some engine mods and 500hp.
    Some weeks ago the Silver turbo was able to pull a nose from the E 55 AMG, but the distance was very small , so we are trying to get some more free time and took theses beats to the limit side by side

    Great!! You seem to have had lots of fun... I enjoy looking at your pics and on what kind of roads you are driving
    I wonder if the break in made the difference of performance between the 2 cars?

    What's car's years of manufacture? How much boost are they doing? (stable max boost and spikes)

    Kiko, both cars are from 2001, but the seal grey is the 2002 modell with the glove box and so on. I was runnig the silver car with the air con off, and I believe my friend was with the AC turned on, has he always uses the AC even in winter. I'll ask him this question, it might be the answear to the power difference.

    Al Pettee, both cars might receive a stage I upgrade, specially if the AMG 55 smoke them

    Check with your friends whats the max boost and peak boost both cars are doing. By this we can determine if by any chance the cars are doing the correct boost which is the best way to quickly determine engine's condition. For instance if the Seal Grau is doing between 0.5 to 0.6 max instead of the normal)for non-X50) 0.6/0.7 with 0.8 peak boost this points out to 3 possible reasons with MAF as number 1, the DV's and the Plugs (the early FR5's instead of the Fr6's).

    I believe the AC compressor is automatically shut off when operating at wide open throttle.

    Some Turbos are just a little stronger than others.

    These trips through the country-side is something I cherish very much over here in Belgium as well. Too bad you guy's live down southern Europe. Otherwise a 3rd TT could have added some LapisBlue to the greyish colour palette .

    I'm sorry but the SL55 AMG (which I'm assuming your referring to and not the E55) has no chance against the TT

    It's a E55 AMG and the owner said his car has more than 500Hp, so it should be fun to see the power difference.

    I still highly doubt it though...no doubt the E55 is fast but its a SEDAN meaning tons of weight...no way could it compare to a true sports car like the 996 Turbo.

    they are almost equal if both are stock (tried it long time back)
    E55 is 473 HP
    SL55 is 500HP

    but if you race the three cars SL,E and TT
    they are all almost the same

    on straight line drag offcourse

    Maybe the silver paint weighs less than the sealgrey?

    The SL55's pace is nowhere near any stock 996tt.. Raced a couple when my 996tt was around 450hp (just ECU + filter) and there was no race.. We re talking about 5+ car lengths 0-120mph. These mercs cant match porsches in anything performance related. Recently I raced a CL55 or CLS55 (twin turbo 610hp I think). My car is dynod at 540+ currently. Still there was no race. Actually i had to take the PSM off to race it from stand on a very cold day with moisture and even though the 996 was going sideways up to 3rd gear I was still very comfortably in front. On a dry day the difference would have been much bigger still.
