-20 mm sports suspension - ground clearance

One of my local dealers yesterday told me that they have sold only 3 997 cars with the -20mm sports suspension out of about 100 cars in total. He also said that some of the owners were already coming back to have the front apron repaired because they have been making contact with speed bumps.

Has anyone here had any problems with speed bumps with the sports suspension or is this problem something that would affect PASM equiped cars almost equally?

Here in London, we have an ENORMOUS number of speed bumps in urban areas especially outside schools and in residential inner city areas of London.

Re: -20 mm sports suspension - ground clearance

My 997S is equipped with the -20mm set up and I encounter about 20 speed bumps on my daily drive. Provided these are taken at a slow speed then there is no contact at all with the underside of the car. If taken at higher speed then the plastic strip which hangs down about 30mm from under the front apron does make contact, but this is quite flexible pastic and doesn't show any major sign of wear. So I don't consider that there is any serious problem with the -20mm ride height, provided you take speed bumps at the correct speed ie: slowly. The -20mm is a very confidence inspiring set up and I would recommend it for UK roads despite what most OPC sales reps will tell you. Acceptable ride comfort is very subjective and I understand why OPC's 'steer' most of their customers away from -20mm because they fear that many would find the ride too harsh. It is stiff but that's what sports car suspension should be like, and it needs to be stiff in order to generate the huge grip levels from the tyres and keep the car stable when you are pushing it close to the limit. I hope this helps you if you are considering -20mm option.

Same as ACA. If you take them slowly, no problem at all. Take them at an angle and then you really have no problem.
My front spoiler has scratched the ground on a couple of occasion, like going down pavements etc. but that's what it's made for, it's plastic.
    Seriously, ride height is ok.
I'll bring the car to London in a few months, if by then, you still haven't made up your mind, I'll gladly take you for a spin so you can judge for yourself the ride comfort.
    Good luck in your decision.

Re: -20 mm sports suspension - ground clearance

As far as I know -20mm is only 10mm lower then PASM.
I have -20mm, too. The speed bumps are no the problem, because I slow down. It happes that I have hit 2-3 times the plastic trip on normal street. But this doesn't matter, no damage.

Re: -20 mm sports suspension - ground clearance

I don't have -20mm but have still managed to 'hit' speed bumps with PASM in sport mode. Perhaps I've been travelling too quickly at the time, but I now make sure that PASM is at normal for all in-town driving.

Anyway, IMHO, sport mode (or -20mm) is only really a bonus when driving aggressively on an open road! When heavy traffic situations occur, which is all too often, it's nice to be able to sit back and enjoy a bit more comfort.

Re: -20 mm sports suspension - ground clearance

I don't have the -20mm but I would be very weary if I did of going over those 'square box speed humps' you see everywhere in London now. Normally you aim to drive over the centre of them and the tires don't typically raise off the road much. If you don't have much under-carriage ground clearance then the top of the hump could possibly do some damage.

I'm with John and the Porsche sales guys on this, unless you do lots of track days, you would probably (like me) only get to drive to the cars limit very rarely, where -20mm would be a benefit.

Mind you saying that, I think if I had X51 and PCCB on my C2S then I would probably want to -20mm also. So it really depends what kind of setup you are looking for, sporty as possible or a good all-rounder...

Re: -20 mm sports suspension - ground clearance

Guys, it is 10mm difference between the Sports Suspension and PASM... if you go too fast over a speed bump it does not matter which one you have. You will hit ground!

I have the Sports Suspension and I am very pleased with it. I did not like PASM when test driving, felt very unnatural when accelerating out of tight bends. Some other thread discusses that in detail...

Same here.... I sometimes touch the black plastic on the sides, but not a problem for the moment..

Re: -20 mm sports suspension - ground clearance

Thanks very much for all your input guys. Very helpful to hear some views based on actual first hand experience!

I have learned not to believe what the dealers say...

Fanch, I hope to place an order sometime in Spring/Summer 2006 so I will still be deciding on which suspension to choose when you next come to London. I would REALLY appreciate it if you would get in touch. It would be perfect to take a ride in your -20mm car to see what the -20mm is really like. I have sent you my mobile number by PM. THANKS!

Re: -20 mm sports suspension - ground clearance

I don't have the -20mm, but it happens that I hit when riding too fast. No damage yet, because the plastic piece under the front of the car seems to be made for.
Two days ago, I didn't see a large concrete speedbump at night...It was like a ski jump : I literally took off and I fell down on the wheels a few meters further. Wow. A little fear but no damage.
