Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

What a day! Got up early to get the final creaks and rattles removed from the 987 and managed to wangle a "lift home" driving the Cayman. What a nice car, fast, responsive, lots of feel. But it aint no top-down roadster obviously and thats the bother.

Between the 3.4 Cayman and my 2.7 987 there isnt much to it. They both feel like the same car but one is tighter, has more midrange and is faster (a bit).

So, I stopped thinking about trading my Seat and new Box in for a Cayman on the basis that a Cayman was a practical htach I love the 987 and that's it.

When I got my Box back, rattle free at last, I loved to be back in it. Can't wait til it gets warmer again to put the top up!!!!

Maybe I will keep the 987 forever now as it puts such a smile on my face no other car has...

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

This raises a question in my mind. Isn't a Cayman also a 987?

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

Drives like one Lets be honest, basically is isnt it.

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

No, well, I mean the model number designation. The Cayman IS a 987 isn't it? Or does it have a different model number?

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

    I belive it's 987 C7S as it's a varient of the Boxster.

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

    designation is 987-120

    code name was C7S

thanks Steve!!! so you underline that there isn't too much difference between the 987 Boxster 2.7(great car and enough power) and cayman s. only the marketing would assure that there is an enormous difference

I beg to differ. The Cayman S feels slightly more powerful than the Boxster S, especially in the torque department there seems to be a difference. And I suppose I don't have to tell you guys how much difference there is between a 987 2.7 and the S. I think that the Cayman S he drove, wasn't properly run in yet. Wait a couple of months and repeat that testdrive. You'll like the additional Cayman S power much more. And you have a point: giving away 15 horses for the possibility to put the top down when the sun shines, not to speak about the lower price tag...there really is a point to it.

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

RC there is not very noticeable difference between boxster 2.7 and S, also owners in this forum said it. only the feeling of more torque. 0-80km/h boxster 2.7 is 0.2s slower than boxster s due to diff. gearbox ratios

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

There's a noticeable "seat of the pants" felt difference
    between a 987 and a 987S.

Sounds like the car was driven sedately and didn't get full throttle on a open road.

At 80kph the S hasnt even started to breathe yet.

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

To me there is a really BIG difference in the driving feel (3.2 vs 2.7). I don't care much about the performance on paper (like IMO quite pointless 0-60 mph discussions), but what do you mean by "only the feeling of more torque" ?

Driveability of the 3.2 is so much better due to it's additional displacement and better torque. I might be wrong in not recalling the very exact numbers, but the 2.7 would gain it's max. torque at appr. 4,200 rpm, while the 3.2 would deliver the SAME torque-number at appr. 2,000 rpm (perhaps somebody is able to post the torque/HP diagrams) - if that's not noticeable, all the S buyers (I think appr. 50% of all Boxsters) must be pure Porsche-marketing victims to pay the "noticeable" price premium for the S (though I am not saying that there is no such thing as Porsche-marketing victims at all )

Don't let yourself get fooled by the IMO sportier exhaust noise of the 2.7 at lower revs - the S is just another animal with a sort of Jekyll & Hyde character - very composed at lower revs only waiting to show his second face once the variocam gets to work at higher revs.

So my take is that the difference between Boxster S and Cayman S will be "noticeable" (though haven't driven the croc yet) while the difference between 2.7 and 3.2 Boxster is "more than noticeable"

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

the boxster 2.7 is as fast as 986boxster s, just enough for everybody. and the engine delivers 250hp in reality, not only 240. this data is given by italian mag Automobilismo that test every sport car on a dyno.

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

Guys, I have to thank you. Finally we got back to the old fashioned Rennteam-style civilized and rational discussion. Kudos to you all.

I still think that the Boxster S feels and IS in fact faster than the Boxster 2.7, I don't know why some get the feeling that it is different. I drove both various times, even back to back and there actually is a huge difference, at least in perception but I'd say in performance too.
I know that under 90 kph, the performance difference isn't huge but at higher speeds, it is pretty noticeable. Almost two seconds from 0-160 kph is a lot and up to 200 kph, there is already a difference of more than 3 seconds. As a comparison: between the 997 Carrera and the 997 Carrera S, there is only a one second gap from 0-200 kph (125 mph).

If "fast" would be translated into Vmax only, you might be right, but then still the better torqe would be in favour of the "S" IMO (even 986 S).

Anyway, I think we should compare 987 to 987 S and not 987 to 986 S in order to be consistent with the comparos.

As for the "just enough for everybody" : there are a lot of people (incl. RC) who think the excellent chassis easily could handle appr. 320 HP. I share this view.

Interesting comment about the Automobilismo dyno test. I am curious whether they have tested the 987 S also - do you have any information about this ? Do you know from where Automobilismo does source the test-cars ? Is it a random pick like from a dealers show room or do they use factory cars, which might be tweaked somewhat to gain better results ?

RC, thanx for the flowers It seems to me that you have been missing something in some of the not so "old fashioned" threads in the recent past

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

Agree! I just changed my 986S to 987S and to my suprise difference is big! 987S has more midrange response and with PASM it is even more stable in curves...
Steering feel is better etc. Only thing that I need to do is to like Speed Yellow...
I tried and compared 987 and 987S, in my opinion there is a difference and I can feel it. One other point, 987S has better brakes.
I will enjoy my new 987S until March 2006 when my 997S arrives.

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

Automobilismo tested also 987 Boxster S. It had on dyno 284,7 hp and 33,1kgm(instead of 32,6)
    Boxster 2.7 had 250,6 hp and 29,1kgm(instead of 27,5)
Both were given by Porsche Italia

Re: Test drove Cayman and they fixed my car!!!

    Thanx for the info
I hope my 987 S will have 290 hp when being built in March
