997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

I'm just curious as to what others are actually getting in terms of average miles per gallon on their 997S cars? I'm getting in the low 14s but the car is new and I am sure it will improve.

    U-Boat

Sorry to be US-centric in my unit of measurement. Feel free to post liters per kilometer or whatever it is outside of the US.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

just went to my car and checked. 2006 C2S, i get around 18mpg, so far the car as 1200 miles. Drinks zero oil, just fuel.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

In the last 1000 miles I averaged 35mph (living in traffic-bound london for you) and this yielded 20mpg

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon

    Here we go with the km-measurement: average 14.000km 15.3 L/100km now in the last 2000km 12.3 L/100km

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon

averaged 16.2L/100km in the last 2500km

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon

On long highway trips, with average speed in the 120/140 km/hr, I typically see 9.4liters per hundred. The best I have achieved is 8.9 liters/hundred along a stretch of highway where the speed was constrained by speed traps.

In other words, on an Interstate at speeds of 75/80 mph I can do about 350 miles on a tank with about a 20/30 mile reserve. Or Montreal/Boston, Montreal/Toronto on a single tank, no stops.

During my typical daily comute, a mix of highway and city, 12.5 liters/hundred. If I go into the downtown area of the city, with the stop and go trafic, I am luck to see 16 liters per hundred.

When driving through the mountains on twisty roads, anywhere from 12 to 16 liters per hundred, depending upon how aggressive I am driving.

The car has 14,000KM on the clock. Fuel consumption is better now then when new. The difference is about 1.5 liters per hundred. Oil consumption has been 1 liter in 14,000 km.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

In the past 10 weeks, in the UK, over about 3000 miles, I've averaged 23.5 MPG. On trips over 100 miles the average is around 27 MPG.

For bursts of rapid acceleration - I'd rather not look!!

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

I agree - most of my mileage is motorways. I've done 6,500miles now and I'm getting 27mpg on long trips. That's cruising at an "acceptable" UK motorway speed. Less around town obviously.

While running in my consumption was much worse (well under 20mpg), but once it'd loosened up things were much better.

    Gaz

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

    18.2 mpg, avg 38 mph, 1 qt oil @ 4200 miles, 4600 odo, MY06 C2SCab

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

I've been getting about 17.9 mpg. Doesn't seem to ever change regardless of speed. I have 1771 miles so far and have added 1/2 quart of oil. I hope this fuel economy increases a bit. After two boxters I really love my 2006 991S.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

9500 miles since April. Averaging 21.2. Only one quart of oil.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

bad stop and go traffic: 12-13 mpg

    extended highway: 26 mpg

    I have about 4200 miles

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

19.2 MPG, 5700 miles, a 50-50 mix of rural and city driving.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

OMG I'm a little concerned with my readings compared to what you all have posted so far...

Could this be an indication of my break-in style??

My trip computer is reporting avg 12.9-13.9 mpg

Perhaps I should be taking it easier??

Still only 900 miles, but I swear- I mostly keep it under 4200 rpm.... m-o-s-t-l-y

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

14.8 mpg with 450 miles on my 911 CS....+ 1/4 q. of oil. Drive limited to approx. 5 miles around the house basically showing it off to all 4 fathers (3 in-laws...I think)..so I'm "driving it"...although, try to keep under 4500 rpm.

I'm in the same boat. Right now, I'm averaging 13.9MPG with 450 miles and I've been "mostly" keeping it under 4200. But my average speed is only 26MPH so I chalk it up to city driving in traffic.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

Our UK gallons are bigger than yours in the US. But our miles are the same size..:) I get 20 ish UK miles per gallon. But on Sport with PSE on. When its off I get more mpg.

I wish I could say my mileage info was due to stop-n-go but a high percentage of mine are from wide open freeway driving

I'll attempt to explain why my mileage is as poor as it is:

It's about a 50 mile jaunt from home to work; once the car is fully warmed up I'm pretty firm with the throttle until I arrive at my destination.

On the freeway I'll vary the speeds much as possible; usually Ill stay in lane #4 or #5 (all the way to the right) and let the car slow down in 4th gear to 60mph or below if traffic permits and open up as much space in front of me as possible. If I can drop down to 3rd (or leave in 4th) I'll floor it through 4th and 5th and some of 6th if I can, shifting at 4200-4400rpms. Then immdeiatly release throttle, match revs and downshift back to 5th, then 4th, letting the engine slow the car back down to 60mph so I can rinse and repeat. I'll do this repeatedly until I get off the freeway, trying not to be at a stagnant pace for longer than a minute or two.

On city streets (well, more like suburban areas), I'll just leave a stoplight normally, let the clutch engage fully and give it 80-90% throttle through the gears, and also letting the engine help 'slow' the car as I come to the next light.

So I wasn't expecting any good numbers from the trip computer; but after comparing what others are getting mileage-wise I'm just a little concerned I might be being a little too hard on the car

I'm not over revving; but I am driving the car in spirited fashion 85-90% of the time.

I plan to tone down this style of driving as I get closer to 2K miles. Constant rapid acceleration/deccleration fun as it is, I find myself checking my mirrors all too often for CHP. At that point my mileage should come back up a bit. But probably not much, because I'll be revving much higher! Oh well

Apologies if I sound like I'm jacking the thread; at least part of my post was mostly on topic

Good God man, 80-90% throttle everywhere you go around town???? Geez, the only time I drive like that is when I'm in an econo-box that needs the throttle floored everywhere just to get out of its own way!!!

I pick and choose my moments to dip strong into the power, and sometimes I'll do a full throttle rip through a few gears. But most of the time I'm just letting the car do its thing, as it feels nice and athletic just squirting around at 30-40% throttle. Then, when I've got to make a pass, hit a hole-shot, or get some distance on congestion, I've got it right under-foot.

From your description, you're just wasting gas. When Porsche suggests that you vary speeds, they don't mean floor it, then slow down, then floor it, then slow down. They just want you to vary rpms, which you can accomplish by driving at a constant speed, but alternating between 4th, 5th and 6th gears in periodic intervals.

Is this your first relatively "fast" car?? I drove like you when I was 16, when power was still a relative novelty to me

It's funny that you asked that Bossman

Other than doing shifter karts in 2001-2004 it's been a little over six years since I've had anything enjoyable to drive on the street. I have to admit I'm smiling as I'm throttling it around everywhere but by nature I'm pretty much the same as you described; I like to pick and choose when I dip into the power. But in regards to my 997, I'm just trying to do my best to get the break in right.

I've read so many things about break-in and I've been taught to get those rings seated asap! I want to accomplish this without stressing the engine by overrevving. So, I rationalized that driving her nice and firm while keeping the RPMs at a respectable limit would be a good compromise. If I wind up wasting some gas to have a strong running engine later on then I'm ok with that.

But perhaps I'm over-doing it just a little

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon

With 600 miles on the car I'm averaging about 12.9 mpg.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

I am at around 20... which is pretty good for city driving i think...

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon

16 ish for around town stuff.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon

    2500 miles. 19.1 mpg....

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

Before I sold it (17000 km): around 17 litres/100 km, do the math. With chrono sport turned off usually one litre less per 100 km.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

Currently about 23.8 or so mpg (UK gallons). Pretty much all long distance driving. If you tootle along at 50-60mph and keep the aircon off etc I reckon you could easily get over 30 but would get very b-o-r-e-d.

I often keep the aircon off, partly because I'm a cheapskate and partly because I want to ensure every ounce of power in the engine goes onto the road ...

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

Still maintaining 23.5 MPG (UK) overall - mainly short distances. How much extra power is obtained by turning off the air-con? I usually leave mine on even in winter to avoid window misting and condensation.

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

I seem to recall Topgear stating that on an Audi A8 turning off Air-Con saves about 6mpg

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

    average consumption
    13,5 l / 100 km

Re: 997S Owners: What's Your Actual Average Miles Per Gallon?

I have a C2 (non S) and I get about 18 City and 25 Hwy. Now this is when I am "crusing". As I'm sure we all know every now and then its nice to see what she can do.
