Re: Is anyone else crazy about gt silver on a coupe?

Hi everyone. This thread is of great interest to me because I myself am choosing between Arctic silver and GT silver.

First of all, thanks to tooner and tlsmithx for posting their photos. With respect to you both, the lighting in your photos doesn't seem right to me. You may have altered the brightness and contrast using Adobe Photoshop (or similar) software and although, it may 'improve' your photos in your eyes (because you know what the real lighting conditions were when you took the photos) but to us, the colours look altered and unnatural.

Many people here may not have seen GT silver in real life. Well, I have seen it numerous times in real life. It is a very difficult colour to photograph. It looks like a darker shade of silver but it does not look grey.

I like both silvers. For those of you who want a less common colour, any silver is the wrong choice for you. If you want a beautiful but very practical colour (easy to clean, hides scratches well), silver is hard to beat. I won't say any colour looks better because that's entirely subjective. We all have our tastes.

Also, resale cars are much more common in arctic than GT silver. It is unlikely that you will get any money back on resale for the extra you pay for GT silver. As such, it is not good value for money in relation to resale. However, if you like the colour and it is worth it TO YOU, then get it.

Both are lovely colours. I am 80% convinced I will pay the extra for GT silver. But 20% of me is thinking of arctic.

Remember, both cars will show panel lines clearly. They aren't black which will hide those.

Anyway, these were just my general thoughts. Hoped they helped in some small way.

Re: Is anyone else crazy about gt silver on a coupe?

It's a great color. Especially when you get close to it, you can see the brilliance of the more distinct (than AS) sparkles.

I remember when I was a kid that paint which was filled with *large* flecks of reflective sparkles at custom autoshows. Would be cool to have those large sparkles again! Well..., maybe the *medium-sized* sparkles in GT silver.

Re: Is anyone else crazy about gt silver on a coupe?

    Hi SB,

Not sure what you mean by 'high maintenance'?

If you mean stone chips - I haven't had any yet but get quite a few on my light blue 8-series.

If you mean cleaning - I just get my 997S valetted (together with my other cars) once a week and all's well. But I do that whatever the colour.

Please clarify - maybe there's something I'm missing.

    Thanks - John

Re: Is anyone else crazy about gt silver on a coupe?

I see GT Silver every time I visit my dealership.....as they have yet to be able to find a buyer for their Carrera GT. Each time I go in, and say "I see you still haven't found a home for that GT", my sales guy Bob has an ever-increasing amount of wrinkles appearing on his forehead....

Re: Is anyone else crazy about gt silver on a coupe?

I like GT Silver, but for that much money - I'd rather put it towards some other option...

My dealer has or is about to deliver their 10th CGT. They had two in the showroom a few weeks ago and neither one was GT Silver.

I just mean that swirls and scratches - any imperfections that develop over time really - show up much more on a dark colored car like black. Black therefore requires an extra effort to keep clean and free of the particles that cause these marks. Black also requires more frequent polishing and waxing if you want to keep that beautiful mirror like finish. Silver will never have that finish, but on the other hand, it's much easier to keep looking great.

My winter car is black and it's 5 years old, and I just cringe every time I see the paint on it. From a distance, it's beautiful, but up close, it drives me crazy. I don't want to see thos little imperfections, and I certainly don't wan to put in the hours and extra attention that a black car seems to require, to me at least.

But make no mistake about it - black is beautiful.

Washing a car once per week is not enough for a black car driven every day. You can get away with once per week on a silver or gray car.

I always refer to paint with large metallic flakes as "boat paint", akin to the paint popularly used on 80's-era Bass fishing boats...

Also.... popular on dune buggies, and I believe that the Corvette in "Corvette Summer" received liberal doses of "boat paint"

No doubt, black is a bee-otch to keep slick, it keeps me busy. But when it comes to my "fun" vehicle, I'm a glutton for punishment I suppose.

Re: Is anyone else crazy about gt silver on a coupe?

I like GT silver, but $3000 is way too much. Why can't Porsche make it as regular color option for $900. My car is artic silver.
