Re: Cayman RS - It's real?

I suppose at the end of the day it all ends up with personal preference, but if rearengine had been superior to midengine the CGT, McLaren etc would have been built on a rearengine concept??

... if so ... how come the numbers don't prove that ... i admit that the Cayman creates this subjective feeling ... but when it comes down to acceleration figures ... on paper it is not significantly faster than a Boxster S ... and when you look at the slalom results of the AMS-test it is indeed slower ... so where do you get your confidence from ... ?

    hi Tom

In the first part of my quote, I said: "I would like to throw into the discussion some comments from Excellence magazine about the Cayman." Your quote of me is exactly that. A quote from Excellence magazine.

I wish I could speak from first hand experience, and I will when I receive the January build Cayman I ordered. But until then I can only quote from sources I trust. There are currently no Caymans in the USA that I have access to drive.

    Until then.

I would expect that any Cayman RS/CS will be stripped out and have track biased suspension. As most customers want a good sports car for the road with the attendant comfort and luxury, it would not steal many sales from the 997 despite being potentially faster and cheaper.

And don't forget about Porsche's opportunity to price any potential Cayman RS/CS at a substantial premium. My guess is that it could be priced modestly lower than the upcoming 997 GT3 and still find buyers for a limited production run.

Re: Cayman RS - It's real?

A Cayman RS that could only be used with street tires would be a absolute joke and a slutty whore job for "RS" nomenclature. Even Porsche wouldnt do that. RS actually means more than just two decal letters.

The Cayman engine doesnt have a dry sump oil system like a GT3 does and cant use race tires period. And Porsche wont waste their time devloping and building a Cayman RS to compete with the GT3 that already benefits from track development and has limited customer volumes.

You think Porsche is simple minded? Think they will duplicate Porsche Motorsports budget, staffing and R/D time to develope a Cayman RS useable for road and track to get zero real gain for their time and money?

You arent going to get a GT3 car or even a faux imitation one with RS decals on it for less than a real GT3, so get over that fantasy.

A Cayman RS has as much chance of becoming real as seeing a Cayenne pick up truck run in the NASCAR truck series.

Re: Cayman RS - It's real?

    Jim

A cayman S Clubsport wouldn t that be nice.

The midengine design is perfect for track and is a dream in handling and agility.

For me the perfect Cayman s Clubsport would be something like this.

    Under 1300kg.
    320hp or 340hp even better.
    Porsche GT3 race seats.
    Porsche sports suspension
    And a Limited Slip diff.
Normal road tires is good enough so dry sump is no need for.

Get some luxery stuff out and try to make it little cheaper for track enthousiasts.

Re: Cayman RS - It's real?

Advevo, Every other Clubsport model Porsche has not been restricted to street tires for a good reason, Porsche prefers building winners not "lookers."

They already building 6 different versions of the M97 engine (Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman S, 997, 997S, and 997S with the X51 power kit.)

I dont think they are crazy enough to offer a 7th version for a faster version of the Cayman S, but you never know.
Maybe they dream of dealing with more development, manufacturing, spare parts logistics and dealer training for only a few more customers.

If you want a Porsche for serious street and track use you can get a already proven winner, the GT3. Dont hold your breath waiting for a lower priced GT3 based on a lightweight 987.

Oil pressure and temp gauges would be nice as well IMO.

Re: Cayman RS - It's real?

If Porsche won't make the CS version, perhaps some tuner will!?

Re: Cayman RS - It's real?

I think a CS on these lines is far more likely than an RS but I would expect power to be 300-305bhp (upgraded ECU only and no change to servicing etc) if there is any increase at all. And knowing Porsche, the race seats will be an expensive option

Ha, that's a good one! Wait, there is a Cayenne pick up truck in Porsche's future product plans? You know that's how rumors get started. :-)

Re: Cayman RS - It's real?

Shouldn't be real - otherwise it would outperform the 911. I don't want that to happen.

Re: Cayman RS - It's real?

I saw in the Box-forum that Techquipment offers "illuminating door sills" !! Is that a productline that P is working with, I suppose the CS/RS Cayman will never happen.
Fuzzy dices with P-logo is more likely.
