I have strictly no infos about the 997 Turbo, but i would just say that Porsche has to keep a coherent range of power for their models.

After the turbo, they will have to fit the 997gt2 between the turbo and the CGT, so i wouldn't expect more than 480bhp for the standard turbo.

The 996 GT2(480bhp) was not very far from the cgt in acceleration and top speed, so what will happen with a 550bhp 997gt2.....?

I wouldn't let the CGT act as a ceiling on the 911's power and performance stats., the CGT is a limited-production model, and the 911 is still the flagship. Heck, the 993TTS was about as fast 0-60mph as the CGT. BTW, a 550HP 997GT2 would rock.

But the stated 1000 degree centigrade exhaust temperature is very interesting! It might also be a emissions breakthrough for a gasolene engine?

With that exhaust temp will the engine incinerate 100% of its own emissions? Will it even need catalytic converters?
    Could it even use them?

Im really excited and hope this is the big breakthrough! The near instantaneous power it makes, throttle response and emissions control could lead to a special new government
classification for the 997TT - "SFSULEV" : Super Fast Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle!

It may make a Toyota Prius look like a BIG Polluter!

The 1000 deg C temp is not exceptional for gasoline engines, Jim. It's just higher than the temp at the turbine inlet of diesel engines, which variable geometry tubos have been used on up until now.

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

Yikes! I'm hoping they iron things out before they go into production, because VTG seems awfully complex, we're talking about a company who couldn't master the static electricity from the headlight covers here.

    Sounds awesome though. VTG DSG!

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

Fritz, I was confused by the wording of the press release and its mention of special heat insulation materials for its exhaust system. Sometimes I dont read English well. Thanx!

    He, he,

Interesting perspective. That's sort of been the Porsche rep.: Masterful design of the engine and drivetrain, but the radio doesn't work right. But I'll argue they should work on improving the latter without interfering with advances of the former.

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

    Rennteam gurus:

Thank you for the great scoop. Congratulations! I am very pleased that Porsche is doing this. It shows they are still pushing ahead technically...

    OK,

I'm one of those guys who usually preaches about how the ultimate power of many cars these days is way out of the realm of usability in day to day driving, but man... 508 hp... that would be a remarkable spec for a production car that will no doubt maintian the current model's impressive reliability and tractability (well, improve the latter even). I do hope this rumor comes true.

And radios... aren't they just substandard replacements for the engine note?

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

    Awesome news!

It makes waiting to see it and get some official power figures even harder.

I hope the rumor of 508hp is true RC. That would be great.

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

Damm. Now I'm going to have to trade in my 997S for the Turbo and my 997S hasn't even been delivered yet.

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

I want one! the only thing is I must re-hash, does this kill it for tuners?

    Great news...

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

I think it's an expression of desperation about the fact that the 997gt3 might get creamed by the 508 hp Über-TT !!

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

508 hp!! if this is true ,well porsche would have left all competiton behind for 5 years... not only 508hp but 508 porsche hp....too good to be true

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

    Wow, this looks very impressive

With a torque-curve that looks like Denmark (as in very flat) from the VTG technology, and with (hopefully) 508 hp, the new Turbo is going to blow (pun intended) everything else off the road!!

But then, the 911 Turbo has always been the Elvis Presley of the motorindustry - The King

Think about it - the early 911 Turbo (930) was, as the young Elvis, known for its obscene hip-movements when that huge turbo kicked in or if you lifted mid-corner. Later it put on some weight, just like Elvis, and became more civilized. But still had enough charisma and performance to crush any competition, just like Elvis
The only thing the Turbo doesn't have in common with Elvis is his eating habits, the 996 Turbo doesn't use much more fuel than the 930 Turbo....

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

I spotted Elvis about 3 years ago, riding a bicycle in a small town near London - the King lives, and he has lost weight too!!

Here it is: to celebrate the 911 Turbo, Porsche not only decided to introduce a new technology as a world premiere but also decided to add 100 horses to the power of the 993 Turbo, meaning 508 HP power for the next 997 Turbo.

508 hp is incidentally 1 hp more than the BMW M5.
    By pure coincidence of course

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

Dario, change your order or you will be SVERNICIATOOOOOO!!!!

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

    Guys, did I mention the word R U M O R ??? Don't get too enthusiastic.

We have now four somehow valid rumors for the 997 Turbo engine power. 480, 483, 500 and 508 HP. Pick one...
Honestly: I don't have a clue how much power the 997 Turbo finally has, I heard the mentioned four values from our sources, this is all I can say I'm afraid.
If the 997 Turbo gets more power, the better. If it gets less than 480 HP, I would be highly disappointed and I'm afraid not only me but all other interested Turbo customers.

I'm afraid the new 997 Turbo will pose a problem for Tuners.
Up to 50 HP more power or so, it shouldn't be problem by adapting the engine ECU software only, especially since the VTG technology actually offers some very interesting options to "play around" with ECU settings.
But for serious tuning with different turbo chargers, etc., the VTG technology poses a very big problem. I'm not sure how Tuners will be able to cope with that, it will be an interesting challenge.

Right now, I'm worrying more about WEIGHT. I heard various rumors about the 997 Turbo weight figure and to be honest, I didn't like any of them. They all indicate a weight increase (somewhere from 25 kg to 100 kg) which in my opinion wouldn't be too good. Up to 50 kg weight increase, I can live with that. But more...I don't know.

Oh boy, just can't wait for the press release. BTW: the VTG press release is actually a part of the 997 Turbo press release as far as I heard. I wish they had published the whole thing, not just the VTG part.

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

When is the full 997TT press release expected????

Yes, we are all interested in weight-control, and yes, we all understand that all power numbers are rumours only. But it's still fun to keep speculating. . . .

RC - This is a big problem, imo. I think the 997TT will be an incredibly fast and competent (and safe) car. However, I don't expect it to be much fun to drive (I drive mostly on tight mountain roads and on the track)

If I lived in Germany and could drive legally at 300kph, then I would certainly enjoy it more, otherwise, I think it has very limited appeal for me...

    Yes.

    Re: 997 turbo: VTG confirmed!

Grant, I owned a 996 Turbo before and if the 997 Turbo is only 50 kg heavier, I have no problem with that. Porsche does a great job on "covering" weight, the Cayenne Turbo PK is a very good example. Most of my friends think I'm insane driving this truck the way I'm driving it, most sportscars drivers don't drive their toys the same way. Also look at the GT2/Turbo test results on the Nordschleife, not to forget about the VERY VERY impressive results of the heavy Lamborghini Murcielago in Hockenheim. I had the chance to drive the Murcielago a while ago and completely fell in love with this car. It is unbelievable what you can do with such a heavy beast and you have a hard time to tell the additional weight. Unbelievable engineering job.
