    Porsche driving experience

As part of the UK spec for the 997s, the brochure states 'porsche driving experience' as a standard option (Pounds0). It is presumably done in the customers shiney new car...has anyone been on one? and what did you think of it...has it sharpened your driving skills?

I've been told the basic one is not very useful, they will teach you trivial stuff that any sport car enthousiast already knows such as:
Hold the steering with hands at quater past nine, sit close to the wheel with back uptight. Degressive braking. Etc.
Might be interesting if they teach you about mass transfer, double declutching, heel and toe and all that good stuff but I doubt it.

    Re: Porsche driving experience

Mmmmm might not bother scrubbing my new tyres then. I have however managed to get a track day (not in my new car) out of the dealer when I ordered the car, so I'll have a blast round a track at their expense.

    Re: Porsche driving experience

I've done one of these at Millbrook proving circuit. You get around an hour in one of Porsche GB's cars and the instructor takes you round the mile straight, hill circuit, high speed bowl and the test circuit to show you what the car is capable of. He then lets you go round the same circuits. There is no real tuition as such. You can book a full day course which gives you tuition but I'm not sure of the cost.

    Re: Porsche driving experience

Always good to appreciate the limits of the car. After spending the last 20yrs in front wheel saloons, it would be preferable to find the limits (if I can get near them) on a track rather than on the twisty bits between my home and sheffield!.

    Re: Porsche driving experience

Braking from 140mph on the mile straight is pretty interesting. The stopping distance is astonishingly short and you can pull up absolutely straight without your hands on the wheel. The hill circuit is great fun and replicates a twisty A road. The speed the Porsche guys hustle the car round at is impressive. The car just digs in and grips on the bends. It's great fun but be prepared to leave your stomache dangling in mid air on some of the crests

    Re: Porsche driving experience

Is this in the new MY2006 brochure?

I have all the 05 books and no mention of free driving course. Sounds good!

I pay my remainder of deposit (and confirm spec) next week, so guess I would have found out then!

No free invites that I'm aware of. I will be sure to ask my salesman next time I talk to him (hopefully today!)

    Re: Porsche driving experience

Just to make clear: it's *their* car, not yours . I went on one in Warwickshire (I think) to a DoT test track, where we:

    * went round a short but fast track to test dry traction and the handling envelope of the car (I humbly recommended U don't lift off suddenly in mid-corner - even the slight lift offs I tried brought the front back in sharply after the obligatory turn-in understeer)

    * tried a skid-pan type very wet surface where you can see how PSM helps to keep you under control

    * tested the ABS so you can see how manouverable the car is under very hard braking (stunning)

    * did some fast laps (or rather the instructor did) around a banked circuit - impressive.

There is normally a selection of cars there with/without tiptronic / ceramic brakes / -20mm suspension and LSD - in the session I did I think they were all 'S'. I had one with tiptronic and w/out ceramics and PASM not LSD. Still a *very* fast machine round the track.

A good course but not as intensive as I would have liked - I think they're not used to obsessives like us!!!! Still, good value for Pounds0 (compensates for the Poundsincrease MY05 -> MY06).

Interested to hear your report when you do it - I'm sure you'll have a good time

    SoS.

    Re: Porsche driving experience

My second deposit is happening this wednesday! After 11 months of changing options, I am now at the definitive list.

And I havent't had any sort of PDE invite! sigh!! I didn't get my free magazine subscription either (boring mag anyway). Come to think of it, the free day of racing I was promised never materialised either. Very poor....

Wonder if they'll send me a christmas card!

    Re: Porsche driving experience

    madadd,

On the bottom of the C2s price list, there is a PDE option with a star next to it. The star denotes 'standard option in the uk'.

Haven't got the price list with me at the mo', but i am sure thats how it is presented. If you haven't been offered it you should take it up with your dealer. I have also wangled a track day so don't let them get away without giving what they've promised - they make enough out of us as it is!.

    Re: Porsche driving experience

Used the ability demonstrated of the car when under extreme braking while overtaking some [censored] the other day who sped up when I was alongside and almost put me into an oncoming car. Had to brake hard and steer. The car preformed faultlessly. Was shown that on the test track on the test drive + day!!

    Re: Porsche driving experience

    @ madadd & Steve ,,

So I got the PDE and an eyeful of stocking top , hhmmmmmmm .. .

    They like me....

    throt..

    Re: Porsche driving experience

Did a PDE level one last month, in my 997S. Used my car most of the time on a short race track, some straightline skid pan and abs work, then a curve and a circle simulated ice, (great for watching the rear overtake you!), also a 45 minute fitness talk and a chance to drive a Cayenne over the same routes. It was good, there was one to one instruction for racing lines and braking and heel and toe.
It is included in MY06 in the UK I am presently negotiating the level 2 if we ever agree on a price for my car and the new one which is due to be built in mid november!
Overall it was good, but not great, I had to travel almost 300 miles to the Millbrook proving ground I would not pay and do that again, and I am afraid to say the highlight of my day was when a Bugatti Veyron passed me (I was stationary at the time, although I could have been flat out and the effect would have been the same!)

    Re: Porsche driving experience

Those Bugattis are sneaky. Theyu are starting to show up everyewhere.

    Re: Porsche driving experience

What I should have mentioned is that we were split into groups of three doing each section, our first section was the race track, me a 996 Turbo and a boxster. I did not see exactly what happened but the poor guy in the Turbo left the track and hit a tyre wall sideways after 50 yards of grass, a fair bit of damage left his car undriveable and an early bath! Given where he hit I would say he left the track at around 70mph.
I assume he checked his insurance was OK, mine were happy enough wihtout loading the premium.

    Re: Porsche driving experience

I should also say, it was my car and out of 12 doing it 11 had their own cars, but for Pounds250 (I think) you could borrow a 997S
