    4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

    Excellent write-up:

    Quote:
Whatever your definition of fast, be it defined by Porsche 911, Ferrari F430 or Mercedes SLR McLaren, the Veyron will take it and, in one instant, burn it before your eyes. Time and distance fuse into one unintelligible fog in your head. In the public road environment, there has never been anything like this.

    Driving Impression: Bugatti Veyron

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

If you want to know what it feels like to drive an F1 car (at least in a straight line) - buy a Bugatti Veyron:

    Quote:
So you think you know fast? I did too. But I was wrong. Until today and in the context of road cars, I had no idea what fast meant - and I've been lucky enough to drive almost every car that, until now, the world has thought the fastest.

So let me tell you what fast really is in 2005. Fast is accelerating from 150mph so hard that the slightest ripple in the motorway starts the traction control light flashing - this from a car with permanent four wheel drive. Fast is the ability to abolish straights. Exit a corner in third gear and however long the straight that follows, by the time you have come to terms with what's happening to you, you need to be on the brakes. Fast is a 0-62mph time of 2.46sec, an achievement this makes it every bit as accelerative from rest as a modern Formula One car.

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

I have a new goal in life, once to drive a Veyron

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

According to CAR magazine the Veyron engine actually poduces around 3000 hp in total
1000 hp is lost in the cooling system, another 1000 hp goes out the exhaust and the remaining 1000 hp drives the car.

It also has a high-speed button in the cockpit for when you want to go really fast. This lowers the rideheight, puts the spoiler in the lowest position and closes many of the ventilation ducts. All this is done to reduce drag so that it actually can achieve 250 mph.

So in a sense they are "cheating" a little to acheive 250 mph by having two different configurations on this car, one slow-speed and one high-speed. Because with all the ventilation ducts open they would cause too much drag to go really fast. (A car that produces 1000 hp in heat needs a bit of cooling )

In comparison the McLaren F1 did 241 mph without a high-speed button....

Yes, but also interested to read that the Bugatti is limited to 253mph...!!!

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

holy cow, 2.46........... nothing will touch this thing on the road! nothing!

    this is sacrilidge!

it's even got a dial to show how much horse power the car is producing?! check the bottom left. the f430 won't even reach half way

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

so when is ha buying one...

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

    Quote:
I still don't know when it would have stopped had the instinct for self-preservation not taken over: I drove it faster than I've ever driven any car on the public road and, at that speed, it was still accelerating like most conventionally quick cars do in their middle gears. What I do know is that its top speed of 407km/h (253mph) is electronically limited because of the tyres. Nobody really knows how fast it will go completely unrestricted.

nobody knows how fast it'll go

goodyear, michellin or somebody needs to make a special set of tires for this thing & take it to the salt flats in bonneville. Maybe we'd see the first 300mph road car???

I never heard such BS in my life....out the exhaust lol lol.

Like I said before.. Once the oil hits $100.

No seriously speaking, if what they claim is true, I think we will witness something that has never been achieved in a production car nor will be for a long long time. This is totally insane ... and I like it.

I'm not too sure about the 3,000hp though, but what the heck.. whos counting anyway?!

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

    absurd!!!!!

    TOTALLY insane, i love it.

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

It's something of rush just reading the copy and trying to comprehend the reality of the numbers. Reminds me of the Concorde's nose configurations for landing and cruise.

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

    Absolutely incredible car.

It isn't BS. Gasoline fueled internal combustion engines have an efficiency between 26% and 32%, depending on the state of tune. Some maritime diesels run as high as 52%.

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

Nice pictures and interesting infos, TEMM!!!The 3000bhp seem a bit strange but they maybe talk about the amount of energy lost in friction&generating heat in the car...
Anyway ths car is awesome!!!!!!It's a rocket!!

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

The figures I gave before are for thermal efficiency. The mechanical efficiency is typically 94%.

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

I can't remember how many years ago or where I first learned this but a google search will keep you reading for hours.

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

    interesting, thx a lot Low!!

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

im going to buy the hybrid version. This car is going to suck some gas, and i like to consider myself environmentally friendly.

That's correct. It's Gross Horsepower, including all heat produced...

Sloppy writing on the part of the Car reporter.

Every internal combustion engine "loses" roughly 2/3 of the energy released from combusted fuel in the form of heat and noise. The engine can only be said to "produce" the roughly 30% of the fuel's energy which actually gets to the driving wheels in the form of tractive force to drive the car. The lost energy is "unproductive".

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

Good writeup of the engine at:

    http://seriouswheels.com/top-2006-Bugatti-Veyron-W16-Engine.htm

This is also a pretty great site in general for hi-res auto pics.

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

    That thing is insane!
It seems like it took forever to get here, but now it seems like it was worth it.

I can't wait to see some Hollywood hot-shot environmentalist say that

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

Temm the Bugatti information is fascinating.

I no longer feel bad for not having bought a Enzo or CGT.

Why bother with either if they are half as slow as a Bugatti?

Re: 4Car - Driven: Bugatti Veyron

    Mike,

Again I read of Bugatti's plan to make a Veyron convertible (p.66 of the November 2005 Automobile mag). They also mentioned a possible, lighter "super sport" Veyron model for production-as though the 4,300lb. "base" Veyron lacked sufficient power. . . .
