Can TPMS be added by delaer?

Does anyone know if Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
    can be added?

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

I have read several times in this forum that its not retrofittable. That's why it has to be ordered before the car is built.

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

I was told "no" by dealer...

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

TPMS was supposed to be available on 997s from Day One. Somehow it got delayed until 2006. This makes me think the wiring harness is still in the car. Also, can you see a little schematic of four wheel placements outlined (but not functional) in your particular tachometer? If so there's good reason to believe for approximately one million US dollars you can have it easily retrofitted at the dealer in an a few hours.

Well, more like sereval thousands more than you're willing to pay, unfortunately. I haven't heard of ANYBODY who's retrofitted an option: outrageously costly. Well maybe PSE?

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

Yes, a not to miss option, its not retrofitable and not expensive, and very very usefull.

Not-retrofittable, darn! That's really too bad (assuming A reasonable cost). Sorry I was wrong again.

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

Why should be TPMS be not retrofittable?
It consists of only a limitated number of parts: we have four sensors with the electronics, located inside the tyres, directly at the valves. Then we have four antennas, placed near the wheels, which receive the data from the valve electronics. Via cable the data is transmitted to a small receiver.
Now the only problem is to transmit the data from the receiver to the car electronics. But even if that shouldn't be possible, I guess we will see a separate solution, e.g. viewing the tyre pressures at a separate display.

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

From what I understand, you can't hook it up to the MOST system, installing the sensors in the wheels are easy but hooking them up to the car's computer is the problem. Its sort of like retrofiting a Sportchrono or PASM.

Oh well, I see. Then we really have to wait, until they produce a TPMS with a separate display, which shows the pressures. Similar to the stand alone Navi systems (perhaps these two could even be combined).

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

There are aftermarket systems I believe but I don't know if they will develop one for the 997 like the external MP3 player or Ipod hook up we have been waiting for for years now...

In the 997 surely the best thing is to order the TPMS right from the start from the factory, the same goes for the navi. You can display the tyre pressures in the display of the revv counter and you get a DVD based navi including screen with map function.
But take a look at the F430 for example: if you order navi, you get a stone old Becker CD device, with no screen and no map function. And to display the tyre pressures from the TPMS you have to push a small button to view each tyre separately in a VERY small disply in the revv counter. Not a very clever solution for such a car IMHO. So in that case, a combined stand alone solution with navi and TPMS could be fine.

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

Very interesting, good points. Does the F430 have bluetooth and ext.MP3/Ipod connection? that would make some things much easier. You can't get that in the 997.

You can order bluetooth as an option, price is something around 900 Euro. Cost for the TPMS is about the same, CD-based navi is a whopping 2200 Euro.
AFAIK there is no solution for ext. MP3/Ipod from the factory, but I've already seen aftermarket installations.

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

Interesting, bluetooth is a good option to have available. Hello... Porsche!
as to the ext MP3/Ipod, you can't even have an aftermarket installation if you wanted to in the 997. At least not now. We are still waiting for the promised solution from Dension for years now

Re: Can TPMS be added by delaer?

    Carlos, BTW:
Given the fact, that German firm "Beru" is the manufacturer of the most TPMS including that of Porsche, I have some good news for you.

    According to the Beru website:
Beru released the third generation of their TPMS in June this year (so the current models still use the older version of this system). They reduced the number of parts necessary even further. We still have the four wheel electronics with transmitter (of course ), but no four separate antennas anymore. The antenna is now integrated in a compact control unit, what means no cable from the antenna located near the wheel to the control unit.
So there are even less parts to install. Also they say, that the display module is agreed with the vehicle manufacturer and adapted to the relevant model. So I guess it won't be too long, until we see a retrofit solution which won't be too expensive.
