Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wheel

How many people are noticing there air bag seam becoming more prominent due to the heat? When I picked up my car back in February, my airbag cover was smooth. Now after many months you can see and feel the airbag seam going down the middle and around the Porsche crest. This problem exist only on the sport wheel. The base carrera and multifunction wheel with the triangular center section does not have this problem. I am trying to get Porsche to replace the cover with the leather wrapped one, since the cars I have seen with leather wrapped air bag do not have this problem.

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wheel

I spotted that the other day on my March 2005 car and it's not even hot here!

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

Are you guys talking about this? Bothers me too. Dealer said it was airbag seam and immediately dropped the subject of replacing it.

Well, maybe we should feel better if we all have it. That would mean it's not a "defect."

Looks like defective manufacture to me!

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

What, the vertical line? Same on mine. (Sports, smooth leather) I reckon it's normal.

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

On mine as well, 2 months old and getting more visable

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

Hummm..., that's funny. It doesn't show in any of the Porsche Carrera and Carrera S brochure glamor shots. Their lighting is very dramatic so such a seam should really be evident.

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

If crease is centered and symmetrical, I wouldn't worry about it. Personally I liked the 'old' 996/CGT style (below).

It's also visible on the airbag cover in leather. It heavily depends on lighting.
Here is the thicker steering wheel with smooth leather (option XPA) in sunlight. The seam is easily visible.

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

... and here is a closeup of the aribag cover under different lighting conditions. It is next to invisible.

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

This must be a very common issue...

    One more:

"Nice" Pics. Geez! Who's the QC guy at Porsche who decided a in-your-face flaw like this was OK?

That "Porsche Excellence" slogan is looking a bit SHABBY!

This is no design flaw, this happens when they make the wrong colour decision. Make the thing a dark black (like Audi has for years now) and you can't see anything. Dumb thing to make it grey, I don't like the colour choice too much. The "seam" is needed for the airbag release, this is pretty normal, these are the "braking" points where the airbag brakes through on activation.

Not a technical or design flaw, it is just a choice of colour flaw but I agree, it shouldn't happen on such an expensive car. I suppose that especially Cab drivers aren't happy with that, depending on the light angle shining on the steering wheel centre.

Yes, I wish it were easily comprehended but it's not. My photo showing the "defect" above is a picture of my black interior.

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

I've just taken a look at my steering wheel, and I seem to have the same problem.

Porsche's black interior is not really black! It' s a dark grey.... If you look at Audi's black interiors, it is a much darker black..

Re: Issue with the airbag seam on the 997S sport steering wh

This is definitely a design flaw! Yes, it is the air bag deploy seam, but it should be visible. I have never seen this on any other car whether it's a 5K or 90K car.
