    850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

ok..3 weeks 850 miles. first 400 on two nice 70- 80 mph highway drives, varying gear and speed. next 450 over the last 3 weeks on mostly 30 minute, traffic free ,12 mile commute, with nice open stretches and plenty of room to exercise.
the clutch is seated and the brakes are bedded. kept it mostly at the 4200 max.(.try doing that with the sport throttle).
what is going to happen in the next 1200 miles to my rings or engine that hasen't already occurred ?

    Re: 850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

I started flooring my car after 1k miles

    Re: 850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

I floored mine after 500 miles

    Re: 850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

I dont even have my Porsche yet but I'm already flooring it.

    (while sleeping of course )

    Re: 850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

My dealer assured me there was no need to break-in the car. The UK manual has no such 4200 rpm restriction! I haven't floored it yet, but have adopted Boss9's philosophy on break-in which is staying under 5.5K rpms in the beginning, and avoiding over-revving the engine for long periods.

I think there is no defintive answer, but surely Porsche knows whether this staying under 4.2K rpm is required or not?

    Re: 850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

At this point in time your car should be looseing uip nicely and I pushed mine to the 5500 range for the next 3-400 miles. An occasional jump up to the 6000 -7000 range won't hurt. Last couple of hundred miles I was occasionally redlining and now that I have around 4500miles (6000km) the car feels fabulous. No problems (knock wood) to date.

    Re: 850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

I have posted this before and believe it to be sure...A good friend picked up his Porsche at the factory and talked to one of the engineers on their lunch break. Porsches engineering or marketting dept found that an incredibly high percentage of the new cars were kept to the recommended break-in period at about 50% of their recommendation mileage. The previous models recommended 1000 break-in, now it's 2000 miles. Makes sense to me. Also, lugging it a t low rpm, reving while cold and not varying speed seem more detrimental than occasionally going over the 4200 rpm.

    Re: 850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

At 850? Okay, then, insted of 4200 Just make your upper limit 5000-5500. That ought to hold ya.

Makes a big difference and worked for me.

    Re: 850 miles..why am i still doing this ?

I asked my salesman the same question today. "Drive it like you stole it", was his reply.

I don't mind going again. There's always going to be new guys here and the old ones are gonna drift away. There's always room for new ideas, even though you may have to sort thru "old" ones too. The conversation continues... .

True MMD! It's just funny that this topic stirs up a lot of passion!

    I did, starting today...sweeeeet.
should be bouncing off the redline anytime soon...tomorrow sounds just about right.
For the life of me I don' t remember babying the 996 when I got it, but the engine was just perfect for 45 K, and no doubt will live happily for a long time

I guess you appreciate the dead. I have a cd of a date they did on the summer tour with warren haynes sitting in for jerry..as good as you've ever heard the band sound . i'm happy to share a copy
