Didn't notice it at the weekend = but a quiet drive this evening showed that the problems still there.

Really pee'd off - beginning to wonder with all the issues, not matter how minor,or not, if I ought to think about rejecting it.... bugger!

Have Porsche Centre Bournemouth been taken over by Scotthall BMW? You don't get all the bad luck - just had to have a new windscreen fitted in mine courtesy of a low flying stone.

OK Guys, update from my OPC as the car was in this week.

Porsche have released a technical bulletin in the past couple of days relating to this problem.

Seems to be caused by the oil pressure relief valve, the solution is to replace this and all associated parts - had this done on my car, will eport back whether it's worked or not when I get back from Milan this evening.. fingers crossed!

Rich Any chance your OPC could tell us the TSB number? It would make it easier for us to look up the issue on other boards and get more info from our dealers.

np - I'm down at the OPC tomorrow I'll try and remember and get the number for you all.

Thanks Rich, very kind of you.

    TSB No....

OK, for those of you who were asking.

The service bulletin no. is 145/05.

    Issue Date: 7/Sept/05

    Hope that helps.....

    Re: TSB No....

    But... did they fix it?

Well, they've supposedly had 4 cars in with this issue and mine is the only one that's not worked.

Car is now in for a week - with the ultimatum that if it's not fixed I am rejecting the car - plus they are arranging some sort of compensation for my trouble - although not expecting much.

Got a 2 yr old VW Bora V6 4Motion to whizz around in this week - for those that moan about their dealers loaners there's a new ultimatum from Porsche GB that all dealers must supply Porsche loan cars as from March - watch the servicing charges go up to compensate!!!

    Re: TSB No....

Still no solution for your car? I have the same problem...

Well there appears to be a solution - see the above post regarding the Technical Service Bulletin number from Porsche, but my OPCs first attempt to apply it to my car hasn't worked. They've done 3 other cars where it has worked and I know a couple of people who've had the fix done at other OPCs and have been successful - think it's just my run of luck at the moment....

    Fixed... part 2

Just had a call from the OPC. They were able to recreate the noise (phew!) - recorded it (have visions of mechanic hanging out of car with mike!) and sent recording to Porsche.

Solution from Deutschland - have changed oil to higher viscosity Mobile 1 and changed the filter ( I had heard of someone else having this done a while back as an attemp to fix the initial problem). They have roadtested it from cold every morning since and the problem no longer occurs - proof in the pudding when I pick it up tomorrow - fingers crossed.

Note: this was in addition to replacing the oil pressure relief valve first time round.......

Now, whats the weather forecast for the weekend - it's p'ing down here in Atlanta - could do with some roof down action on the south coast tomorrow.

    Re: Fixed... part 2

Think they filled in the wrong oil to begin with?

    Re: Fixed... part 2

Good news Rich - hope this has fixed it.

    Re: Fixed... part 2

    Hi 987 owners,

My car began making this sound about 1000 miles ago, hence my interest in this thread. After reading the many helpful posts here, I took my 987S to my dealer and related what I'd read on rennteam.

After consulting with his PCNA rep, my service advisor gave me some new info:

1-the TSB issued in he UK has not been made generally available in the US.
2-the specific TSB # you mentioned Rich, is for the 2.7L Boxster only (so I am told) and not the 3.2L.
3-Porsche is aware that the problem exists in both engines, and is preparing a TSB for the 3.2L.
4-US versions of the current UK 2.7L TSB and pending 3.2L TSB should be available soon.

So Rich, if your car is a 3.2L, perhaps that is why it has required multiple attempts to fix it with the TSB# you posted.

    Re: Fixed... part 2

    Have a reaonance @ 2000ish RPMs 05 Boxster 2.7.
Took to dealer all they found was a supposedly loose number plate, tried to charge me $125. EVEN THOUGH THEY FITTED THE PLATE INTIALY.
Guess I'll have to wait till the TBS appears in the USA.
Weather changes early in Maine so it will mostly be early Spring 2006

    Re: Fixed... part 2

My dealer updated me on this resonance issue today; some of what I post below may be old news, but just so everyone is up to speed...

1- the "clatter" or "resonance" occurs when the car is cold at 2000-2200 rpm and is best heard on trailing throttle
2- Porsche has determined that the noise is caused by vibration between the piston of the oil pressure relief valve and its housing
3- As the engine warms, the valve and piston expand, stopping the clattering. Oil viscosity at lower temp may play a role too.
4- the fix for my car (US spec '05 987S) will involve chamfering the top of the relief valve piston so that a slightly larger film of oil exists between the piston and valve body at colder engine temps
5- This info should be released as a US TSB for the 987S soon (weeks?)

My dealer has ordered a couple of the pistons, and will have them chamfered locally and subsequently installed. It is not clear to me if Porsche will eventually release a new part number with the chamfering in place, or if they will apply this "local fix" to those of us that have this problem. Either way, the few of you that still have this problem should be able to push their service advisor in the right direction with this info. The key will be contacting PCNA since there is no official US USB just yet.

    Re: Fixed... part 2

Fcking hell. I thought my rattles were bad. My last 05 Box had that issue - though when they tightened the heatshield it vanished!?!

    Re: Fixed... part 2

My 2.7 is booked in next week for 2 days to see this problem recreated and sorted out. They are lending me a Cayenne V6 for the 2 days (great.....), but it seems that initial word from Porsche is that it is not dangerous or damaging to the engine and that Porsche AG haven't yet decided if it is worth a full reeacll/fix, or if it is a 'characteristic of the engine'.

Anyway, it only happens in the mid range of warming up temps and is gone by the time it gets to 80 degrees. Most noticable ona trailing throttle at 2100 rpm.

Some thing to do with surging in an oil pump (my dealership told me). He claimed to have not yet heard a car with this problem, hence the booking in to drive it from cold later that day/early the next morning.

Times in nicely with the Cayman launch that evening!!

    Cheers,

    JZ

    Re: Fixed... part 2

    Hey JZ,

Yeah it's the oil pressure relief valve. When you're driving at a higher rpm and then release the throttle the excess oil pressure is shunted through a valve. My understanding is that the valve consists of a metal piston inside a housing. At engine temps of 40-70 degrees C, there is a combination of "play" between these parts and perhaps the viscosity of the oil that allows a vibrating or clattering type resonance to occur.

If your dealer isn't careful he will not be able to hear the sound. Ask him to put the top and both windows down and wait until the coolant temp meter is at its lowest level. Then drive the car (2nd gear works well) to about 3000 rpm, and release the throttle. As the tach neeedle passes from 2200-2000 the sound will occur-almost every time in my case.

Porsche is probably correct that this isn't dangerous, but it is an easily corrected problem for which (in your case anyway) a TSB already exists.

    Re: Fixed... part 2

The latest in this annoying saga, is that Porsche have issued a new bulliten to tell OPC's to now do nothing but report the VIN of the car in question back to Porsche. They specifically say in their bullitien to no longer replace any oil pumps and also to not change any filters or oil to a lower viscosity.

They state in the bulletin that this noise causes NO MECHANICAL PROBLEMS as they have checked that oil pressure to the engine is never starved or dropped.

SO in other words it looks like this is a 'characteristic' of the 987. I can't see Porsche coming up with an easy fix any time soon. Other than that, they fixed my door handle and windstop rattles perfectly.

    Cheers,

    JZ
