    Mid-engine 911?

Pardon me if this was already discussed... The word on the street is that PAG is testing a mid-engine '911'. Such a car was spotted at Sebring and other places. Based on the future '911' (992?) chassis, which can accommodate a rear or a mid-engine design. That chassis will be shared with Lambos and R8s...

With a mid-engine that car may look like a 911, but it is not one. A 911, for me, is an all-in-the-rear design with all its quirks. Anything else may look pretty but it's just another great performer, glued to the ground, easy to drive, fast car. Many out there to choose from.

I think the rsr race car may be mid-engined (and turbo), but think the 992 will be rear-engined with hybrid in some model(s)

I think, they can move the engine forward in the next generation, but still keep it rear engine configuration.

    Re: Mid-engine 911?

Till now a mid engined 992  is just speculation. All we know is the upcoming 960.

    Re: Mid-engine 911?

Wouldn't make sense to get rid of the rear engine configuration of the 911, it wouldn't be a 911 anymore and the 911 is the only model that Porsche has that is unique and no other manufacturer has, and sportrcars come and go but the 911 after 50 years its still the sportscar everyone compares to.

And there is no reason to get rid of the rear engine on the road car, the GT3RS can hang with any, and yet the 911 is more versatile than any other with multiple configurations thanks to the rear engine platform. And they would also loose a lot of customers like you and me that over generations have come to appreciate the rear engine.

They may move the engine a bit more forward, they have been doing that over the years anyway, but still rear engine. Race cars with its specific regulations, etc is a different matter so the race car version may be another story.

The gearbox stays in front of the engine and the geometry for the axles would be terrible if they did that...

The next Porsche sportscar platform will support mid engined setups as well. This is the same platform VW Group will use for the next generation Huracan and (maybe, if they don't scratch it completely) R8. It is a very flexible platform which will also be used for the next generation 911.

Yes, the "960" is supposed to come around 2020 but no mid-engined 911 as far as I know.

The next 911 generation will use some hybrid tech though...

As it reads Sebring in the opening post, I think the car we are talking about is the 2017 RSR which will feature an inverted engine-gearbox layout for the sake of being competitive in racing again.

The car will be unveiled Wednesday moring at the LA Autoshow, Porsche already posted some videos on social media and there is a thread on this forum as ell: Porsche RSR caught testing at Sebring (You need to search for it, the link didn't work so I removed it)

I'm hearing that it will have a NA engine...so I'm not convinced of its competitiveness.

Agreed, most "pundits" seem to be betting on NA rather than turbocheeky

Halted...delayed...whatever...but the 960 is coming (not before 2020 though as far as I heard).

The major issue why the 960 was delayed is the platform the Huracan and the R8 are built on. It is an Audi platform and the Huracan development was just too far ahead to stop it and switch to the Porsche platform.

The Porsche platform will be used for the next Huracan and R8 (if it survives Audi's cross-off list Smiley) generation as well, so...

So far, the rumored engine is supposed to be a completely new develope Biturbo V8 but with a surprisingly low capacity (way under 4 liters) and over 600 hp (which could be topped with hybrid tech). More rumors indicate a 8-speed PDK, possibly some hybrid tech and a starting price at around 220-250k EUR. The picture is getting clearer but there is still a lot of time until 2020.

The "960" is just a never-ending story...2020 is a long way off, it is disappointing that Porsche is so slow in finally launching this project.

Still, your platform and tech insights are great, even if they are just rumours at this stage!kiss

The tech can change along the (development) way.

The reason why Porsche (VW Group?) chose not to use the current Audi Huracan/R8 platform is obvious. It doesn't make sense. The next Porsche platform is quite flexible and will be used for an array of different cars.

I assume the 960 will be the first to use the mid engined version of this new platform and the Huracan and R8 will follow one or two years later. 2020 is just a (preliminary) target year, it can be 2021 as well. Not earlier though as far as I heard.

But following the Porsche history, we have to see a concept version (quite close to final product in design) in 2017 or 2018...

If the 992 will use the same platform as 960/R8/Huracan, will the Boxster/Cayman also share this same platform?  Or will it share a smaller platform with VW Group cars like Audi TT, Golf, etc. ??

As far as I know, the new (MMB/MSB?) platform is for sportscars like the next gen 911, the R8, the Huracan and the...Aventador.

No Boxster or Cayman, they are going to use a different platform.

    Re: Mid-engine 911?

Thanks - I think I remember reading that it will share with Golf, A3, TT, etc. (think the platforms are designed to swap positions of the motor where they want them).

If the larger platform for the 992 is possible to have front/mid/rear engine, then I imagine the same is true of the smaller platform.  I would love a mini-911 with the rear engine (though they would probably use a Flat-4 instead of Flat-6).

    Re: Mid-engine 911?

Well that is not so easy i guess. The Porsche modular sportscar platform is developed to work with two different engine positions (somewhat similar to how 911 and 98x share a platform, yet quite different) whereas the VW/Audi derived platforms are basically built around the engine position (i.e. diagonal or longitudinal) and the size of the gap between front axle and front door.

I could still imagine 983 and further will use the sportscar platorm, but then it's RC (and others here) who has the factory sources.

I have no information about the future Boxster or Cayman, sorry. The next 911 generation will get a bit longer and a bit wider as far as I heard, they need room for the hybrid tech for example.

There are reports that the new RSR uses a 4.0L Mezger motor, rather than the new DFI motor (supposedly on the Porsche Germany site) described as sequential multi point injection

    Anyone able to comment?

    Re: Mid-engine 911?

    Right!  Just found this:

    It is the DFI motor:

"The new 911 RSR makes full use of the breadth of the Le Mans 24 Hours GT regulations, and in addition to systematic lightweight design, features the ultra-modern, flat-six unit positioned in front of the rear axle. The four-litre, extremely light aggregate features direct fuel injection as well as a rigid valve drive and is characterised by outstanding efficiency. The new 911 RSR will make its debut at the Daytona 24-hour race in January 2017."
