I buy race fuel (110 Octane with Lead) and its price is $4.40/gallon. It is the same as it has been for over a year, so it seems "relatively" more economical now that Regular 87 Octane unleaded is over $3/gallon here...

One litre of Super Plus 98 octane fuel (this would be 95 octane US) cost over here in Germany right now 1,40 Euro.
1,40 Euro is around 1,69 USD. So ONE GALLON of 95 octane US fuel costs in Germany around 6,40 USD. Any more complaints from the US???

My only complaint is 95 oct fuel isn't widely available in CA...
Remember as a small child in early 80s an era of 55MPH speed limits and so-called performance cars w/10 sec 0-60MPH times and talk of ever-smaller, less powerful cars (was very depressing to hear as a kid yrs away from a driver's license and more yrs away from ability to buy a great sportscar
)....don't think many pundits in '85 predicted that cars like 997S/996TTS/430, etc would be so widely available in '05, as we all await a 997TTS w/?80 more hp than its predecessor Gas prices move in cyclic patterns, as do "expert" forecasts of how much oil is left....

Not to worry. As long as we are financially well off it will hardly affect us at all. It will hurt the average citizen a lot more. Hopefully, they'll start using more trains and buses, reducing the amount of traffic (wet dream

The hurricane-related bumps in gas prices are temporary blips. The main cause of sustained gas price increases (only moderate over several years) is tremendous increase in demand world-wide, including increases in China, not dramatic decreases in supply.
But RC is prescient, eventually a barrel of oil will be > $100, again, not due to decreased (easy) production, but to ever increasing demand. That's when the fuel cell/alternative energy engines will take off (they'll be economically competitive). But we'll still be able to drive our cars powered by internal combustion engines that are fueled with gasoline, albeit for $5-10US/US gallon.

I used to have business contacts in SA some years ago, and remembered hearing from them about Sasol (then a state company, if I remember correctly) being a leader in the production of synthetic fuels from coal.

I am a fan of the market forces at work with gasoline pricing. I think most US consumers are capable of being much more careful about gasoline consumption, and will become so now that prices are higher. There's nothing illegal about driving a gas hog SUV, but I certainly don't want to hear any bitching about high gas prices if you choose to operate one of those monstrosities. Fuel is still extremely cheap here in relative terms. I suspect many posters on rennteam spend more on one meal than they do filling their tanks. I would keep driving my Boxster even if gas were $20/gallon. But maybe I'd finally buy a Ducati Monster too...
