Do I need to wax a new car

My P car should be available to me on Friday. How soon after taking delivery should I wax it? When it comes to waxing, should I do it by hand or buy a electric polisher?

    Thanks

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

DEfinitely by hand and apply and buff in a straight line motion from front to rear. No overlapping circles as this leads to swirl marks.

As to what to use, it depends on how dedicated you are.

Most OPCs use Autoglym, which is fine for 90% of people (readily available in Halfords and other car accessory stores).

You might want to try Meguiars NXT wax (also some Halfords, and www.meguiars.com). Good protection and less dust / chalking than Autoglym.

If you're fanatical, and by your opening comments i guess you don't want to spend hours per week cleaning, then try Swissol or Zymol products

You're car will be waxed during the pdi prep stage, so i wouldn't bother for a few weeks after delivery.

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

Thanks Percymon. How perceptive on the lack of fantacism! I have a brand new and up-opened bottle of Autoglym that I bought for my boxter 9 years ago. I think i will open it now!

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

I'd just use carnauba-based wax. A good quality one. Nothing better except if you want to get the last 2 percent out of a wax that will give you 98%.

    Thanks MMD.

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

yes, but first wash, wax, wash, polish, wax, go to autogeek

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

I think the answer is the car will tell you when it needs paint cleaning and protection. Pay particular attention to the hood and how it looks and feels. The first few times I washed my 997 the paint felt smooth and had good gloss. I was supprised that after about 4 weeks the hood felt dry and lacked its original luster. Perhaps shipping took a bite out of the factory waxing. After careful consideration on what to use I cleaned and waxed the car and it looks and feels great again. I used PS21 gloss enhancing paintwork cleanser a very mild polish which works great with german paints. I also found the carnauba-based waxes work best with these paint finishes and used One Grand Blitz wax a great pure wax to finish the job.

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

If you use a good product, you won't get swirl marks, and the method of application becomes irrelevant. I do overlapping circles because any small hazing and surface scratches will exist in all different directions and attitudes on your paint, 360 degrees. If you polish only back and forth, on a single plane or axis, you won't be rubbing against most of the imperfections, you'll be rubbing with them. That's why professional painters finish with orbital-motion buffers, so that you attack the paint from all directions.

Have you ever seen a car buffer that works like a band sander?? That's why.

Swirl marks happen when you use an abrasive product, or a product that does not buff off efficiently. There are swirl-mark-removers on the market to fix such irregularities.

But all the finish-waxes that I use do not swirl, period, no matter whether I go in circles, figure-eights, or serpentine! LOL!!! And that's on black paint, which is the toughest to work with.

So what are any thoughts on Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax?

I answered on the other thread...

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

Does your answer change as to the need/frequency of waxing if the car is driven only on nice weekends and spends most of its time in a garage, out of sunlight?

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

Yes, absolutely. I haven't waxed my Boss 429 in 2 or 3 years, as it's only spent maybe the equivalent of 72 total hours in any sunlight, or outside, and has never been washed with soap in that time, or driven in rain. The paint is still slippery as owl sh**. Wax does not evaporate, it slowly gets rubbed and washed away. Frequency of waxing or Poly-ing is directly proportionate to how frequently you wash the car. There's no rule if its an occasional driver. You can simply TELL when the wax job is getting thin. Your paint surface becomes less slick and luxurious to the touch, and the car is more difficult and "streaky" to dry off with a towel or chamois. I don't have set intervals. I just feel the paint with my hands, and re-wax it when it starts feeling un-slippery. For a daily driver, that usually works out to a wax job every 2-3 months. For a weekend fair-weather car, you can probably easily get 6 months out of a wax job.

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

Thanks for the insight, Boss. I don't have the opportunity to drive the 997S as often as I like. As a result, it spends a lot of time in the garage.

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

Mine too. Interstate re-surfacing project on my way to work, love bug season, the fact that it's so hot and humid that the car under-performs breathing in this SOUP for air, mine's been doing alot of hanging-out in the garage, waiting for fall!! In Florida, fall and winter and early spring is prime driving season. In the summer, with the bugs and the heat and the daily rain, it takes all the fun away, so I roll high with the truck.

My preference is not to wax the car for a few months to allow the paint to dry completely. I know many think this is unnecessary these days but I prefer to err on the side of caution.

Re: Do I need to wax a new car

Most car dealership dealer-prep departments squirt a spray-wax on the car prior to turning the car over to you, you might have wax covering your paint, and not even know it. It's really nothing to worry about. Look at the 3M film covering the front of your rear wheel flares. That stuff doesn't breath. Can you imagine what would happen to the paint under there if it were not 100% cured prior to installation of those rock guards?

I waxed my 997S the day after I got it. No problems, no ill-effects.

I know this is normal practice in North America. I think it is less common in Europe. I know my Porsche came without wax.
