Break-in period REALLY necessary???
I've seen just how bulletproof Porsches are, and especially their engines, and I wonder if this 1200-mile nothing-over-4000 break in period is really necessary or not. I've seen some writings from BMW technicians about how it's actually better to give a performance engine a good workout, as it breaks it in properly, rather than baby it.
I've read pros and cons, but nothing specific on Porsches. Even Autoweek talks about the faithful break-in period, yet I bought a pre-owned Boxster a few years ago and doubt the break-in period was followed. This car I'm getting Thursday was probably driven rather hard by those 'trying it out', as I know I redline when I test drive a car. If that's the case, and probably 50% or more of the Porsches out there are not broken in with the recommended method, why such the bother?
