    IAA impressions from today!

Have been on the IAA for a couple of hours today. It was qite interesting of course, although I somehow missed the cars which would accelerate my heartbeat with some rare exception. (found the hostesses a blast btw, this is the best pickup place in a long time, check out alfa, fiat and audi!)

so, back to more serious comments:

Porsche: well that stand had all the usual products and i could sit in the cayman for thee first time. my impression was quite good, beeing 1.86 tall i fitted nicely with quite some headroom, much better than in a closed boxster. the loks are alright, it just looks like some 911 baby version seen next to it, so i guess this would hinder many people from buying it. 4s sucks, cant see the difference to the c4 while gt3 cup looks great, i sat in it , it feels and looks the businees. i guess the door doent wheigh more than 4 kg, truely amazing. i think the prospects of the normal gt3 look very well , compliments on superdarius and sergini who have one on order! guess the best news is that a porsche guy, after i pestered him for ten minutes, ushered that the gt3 woul be introduced in march already! guess this would be a surprise cause it woul coincide with the turbo premiere!

Jaguar: the new xk8 looks good in flesh. it has the right proportions but is a bit bland. the astom martin db8 looked more agressive yet less elegant and somehow less sports than a carrera s

ferrari and lambo: no real news, except gallrdo convertible with 520hp

alfa romeo: 159 is an elegant car, the brera looks great. hope they'll make it 4wd.

citroen: c6 a really french alternative n the spirit of the cx and ds. i like it.

audi: q7 - huge front, chunky style, made obviously for american market. wouldn be ppc over her.

mercedes: the r-class, while probably the same size as the q7 looks much more dynamic and carlike. quite elegant over all, I did like it in the amg version

corvette: oh yes... the z06. I sat in it and must say the interior is abit crappy with a far too big steering wheel. the so called sports seats are ridiculous, they feel like marshmellows, even the side support is so weak you can flatten it completely just by pushing with the hand; seating position is not bad though, the gearshift feel almost like a 911 with short shifter, quite sporty and nice imo. the car looks good altogether, guess one has to drive it to find out how it will feel. it's more into the gt3 direction than into turbos imo.

bmw: no news except the 3 series touring, which i find lees attractive than the old one, because the new back looks quite haevy. and of course the z4, which in my eyes looked more masculine than the cayman. i really liked it, guess with 343 hp this car will be a blast.

    and finally:

wiesmann: the new gt is just stunning. marvelous chassis, great finish and batman like looks. the cerbera i used to have gave a similar feeling when seated into it. the difference is that the finish here is at bmw levels. great convertible too, the mf3 is like an m3 off the leash.

will try to post some pics tomorrow, cheers

    Re: IAA impressions from today!

How do you find the headroom in the Cayman compared to the 996 or 997?

    Thanks!!!

    Re: IAA impressions from today!

very good ideed. owing a 996 i can say, there is no compromise to be made. as one can guess from the shape of the hood from the outside it's quite round and airy therefore from the inside. one could wear a helmet with no problem. guess there should be no problem at all up to 1.95 cm height. the difference to he 911 comes when you look back and realize that the space finishes behind the seats - there is the hump of the engine - before descending again for the luggage compartment.
I also liked the z06 magnesium hood as it's a bit like a double bubble. not a airy as the cayman but still ok.

    Re: IAA impressions from today!

Thanks for the insight, I'm looking forward to your pictures.
Regarding the 997 GT3/Turbo introduction timeline: if you check older posts, we expected the GT3 for early 2006 and the Turbo for spring/summer 2006. There is nothing surprising about that. A little hint: Turbo due June...over here in Germany.

So, do you think the headroom may be even better than the 996? I am not that tall, but I have very short legs and long torso, so I could not wear a helmet in my 996...

    Re: IAA impressions from today!

Thanks a lot for your info Turbolite..

can't wait to see some pics!

    ciao

Grant, it couldbe that the headroom is a bit more than 996, but if it is, then not by much. I can say that i doesnt feel as cramped as he Boxster fo sure. will take another seating 'test' for you if I go back there today!

    Re: IAA impressions from today!

    Thanx for the report Turbolite

do you mean ( 4s sucks, cant see the difference to the cs )

how much difference does the C4 look from the C .... can you see a difference in the rear end width .

    Re: IAA impressions from today!

yep, sorry was a bit tired when I did the write-up, lots of misspells: what I meant was indeed that you dont really notice the difference between a 4s and a normal carrera as long as they are not parked next to each other. this is unlike the 996 series where the optical difference was massive. so i didnt want to say that the new 4s looks bad - cause it's beautiful, but I miss the point why one should spend the extra money (also in this case Porsche proves that their value for money gets less and less unfortunately; just look at their financials and we know where the money ends).

    cheers

For the AWD system!!! I like the 996 C2/C4 MUCH better then the 996 C4S, but i did order a 997 C4S, because I think the AWD will come in handy in the winter month. As for looks... I will have to see it in the flesh as for the moment I could prefer the C2S!!!

    Re: IAA impressions from today!

turbolite thanks .. what you are paying for is the 4 wheel drive which I love and then the rear just a little wider is kind of a perk . I do think the Turbo should be a little wider so it looks different but I guess that is not going to happen .
