I would love to see a new evolution pic with the 997.
I see why some purists dislike the 996, and have heard it called names like the 'Japanese 911'. I do prefer the 993 to the 996, but don't think the 996 was at all a bad car.
The 997 is a great car, and a great way to continue the evolution.

I can't agree more.
The 996 has been the best selling 911 ever .... so at least some people loved it enough to buy one. Or may be they were forced or had no other option?
At the peak 993 sales reached 19,096 units (in 95/96) whilst the 996 topped at 32,337 in 2001/02 and has been consistantly above 23,000 units since its introduction....
The old Carrera 3.2l also got very close to 20,000 (19,217 to be precise) in 89/90 but was never ever able to break the bar.

Eric - Wasn't the production capacity during the 993 years much lower. I'm not sure they could've met that demand, assuming it did exist. I think each 993 required much longer to assemble than the 996.
I had heard that the 964 took NINE times longer to build than the 996. I'm not sure exactly where the 993 fit in between...

You're absolutely right, the 993 took much longer to produce than the 996. I don't know the exact ratio.
It is also fair to say that Porsche is outsourcing most of the components of the 996, so assembly time has reduced drastically.
I don't recall if there was any capacity constraint for the 993. At that time, the Boxster wasn't there and therefore Zuffenhausen was 100% dedicated to the 911.
