    Porsche 998

Does anyone know anything at all about the forthcoming 998? Yes, it's far away but several PAG sources have confirmed that the model lines are firmly set for the next 7 years or so. There has been a lot of talk about the 997 being simply another f/r fascia update (retro return to 993 styling) with usual 15 or so HP bump to boot.....then a completely new car (998) for model 07/08.

I've heard however that the 998 will be a front engine Cayenne shared powertrain rebirth of 928 GT with HP options from 340-450. Could than mean an entirely new model alltogether which will coexist with the 997? It would make more sense than spending huge $$ extensively reworking the current platform (to 997 guise) only to fully replace it in 2 short model years??? Someone's gotta know the scoop!

    Re: Porsche 998

First at all, forget about all these 998/GT pictures in car magazines. Yes, Porsche already has a 10 year plan ready but this doesn't mean that the design of the cars is ready too.
As far as I heard, the decision for the 4th model will be taken end of this year. There have been rumors that the project has been abandoned but I never got a confirmation for that (so I suppose it was BS).
There also is a strong rumor indicating that Porsche wants to unveil the 4th model at the IAA in Frankfurt in Sept..
All I can say is...surprise, surprise.

Why don't you guys just relax and enjoy the current 996 line and the 997 in the near future?
I can assure you that the technical specs for the "after-997" model generation hasn't been set yet.
Development starts with the introduction of the 997, so there still is some time left...

The most interesting part of Porsche's future will be the "internal" discussion about more power on Porsche cars.
    I'm curious who wins...

    Re: Porsche 998

with a gt2 available and cheap, i can wait for a long time. mercedes is really bringing the HP arms race to Porsche tho' and i've heard 450 HP again which doesnt cut it.... but it keeps Ruf in business!!!

I wish they had more discussions on weight. Decent power on a light car will outclass the horsepower giants any day.

    Re: Porsche 998

i just heard that the 997 will hit the road next year (MY 2005) and that 4 years later the 998 will be out -- with a FLAT 8 ENGINE!! just rumours, though.

    Re: Porsche 998

The HP race is an interesting debate.
How far do we go to keep the HP rates up?
Seriously, what does Porsche do, cave in and start putting 500hp in a 996 or 997?
Im with Yargk, I wish Porsche would lighten up their vehicles and make them more like road racers.

Market research is the driver. Whereas before when Porsche built a car, they built it for the weekend quasi-racer, if the general public liked it, so be it.
But now, they have done so much market research they know what attracts "normal" rather than traditional hardcore Porsche buyers, before you even get to the dealership they already know what car your going to buy, its kind of scary.
