    Somethin for Carlos

    2006 Yamaha R1 RR
Yamaha M1 S or R1 RR that is the most likely name. Right now Yamaha is in Spain with their VIP dealers showing this and the rest of the 2006 range that will be launched in Paris in October. Since Raptors & Rockets first sniffed news about this bike the briefing planned for late September has been pushed forward and it takes place now as we speak. Maybe there will be something official from Yamaha by the end of this week (this article was updated 23/08/05). This is our estimates: -Price: at least 50-60.000 Euros (based on what Ducati demands for their V4 Desmocedici) -Weight: we estimate between 160-175kg depending on how much extra weight a street legal exhaust system and headlamps puts on the bike. -The radial brakes might not be the Brembo's on a final version, but they must outperform the current Summimoto's. -For such an asking price we expect carbon or other super lightweight material in the fairing. -The air intakes and the most powerful Yamaha in line four ever should easily achieve the 300 km/h (180mph) mark -The engine should get at least 185-190 Bhp or more and 990cc. -Expect less torque than a V4, but still more than all current 1 litre bikes. -Top of the range suspension. -Chassis virtually the same as Rossi's M1. -The most extreme in line four ever to have been made street legal. -Highly limited edition of only 50 bikes (based on it being made for Yamaha's 50th anniversary). The bike might get a name in the line of R1 RR, R9 or R1 SP when launched for the press in September. Words: Tor Sagen. Pic: Ioannis Ragias.

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

damn, i want that black one!!

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

There are alot of amazing machines on that link. I thought Aprilia went broke - were they purchased by another company?

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

WOW! but 50,00 Euros? the current Gixxer/R1 are already doing close to 180HOP and same weight figures but for 15,000 Euros, with basically the same performance since there is little to improve in these bikes carrying high costs and will reflect little on lap times.
Thats going to be avery limited production run for special customers I assume who want to pay such a price for a special version.

There have been rumors of other MotoGP makers such as Ducati and Honda bringing out a MotoGP derived version for the street as well, but nothing has come out really. I'm good friends with the Yahama dealer here who is one of the most important in the country and he would know so if I see him I will ask him about this...

@ Grant, Aprilia is doing great! They also sell other type of bikes like trail bikes, scooters, naked bikes, touring bikes, and the V-Twin sportbikes. In fact, the Aprilia bikes kick Ducati's butt everytime in the mastertests in the Vtwin 1000cc class. IMO if you are looking for a V-Twin sportbike, I preffer Aprilia (sportier and faster around a track) even though Ducati has more brand image in US.

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

i wonder how many birds/small children will get sucked in through that air intake (on the yellow one)

I know they are great bikes, but didn't they have financial problems (or did I dream that )?

its a "Ram Air" first used by the Kawa ZX-R's I believe (used in cars already before that, like Ferrari) and its suposed to give you a few more HP at higher speeds since by its design on the intake, when the bike is moving fast, the air gets "forced in" sort of working like a little force-induction. It only works at higher speeds but may give you 5-10HP, that will not reflect on the dino though since on the dino the bike is not moving.

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

Sold my ZX-10R last Sept. Almost bought a Raven R1. Waiting to see if Suzuki remodels the Busa. Any news about that on your end ?

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

Unfortuantely no news that I know of about a new Busa, all the mayor makers are focusing on the 1000cc/600cc inline-4 class war now...

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

i really like bikes, but never driven one. As a beginner do you think it should be better if i start of with a 600cc or 700c and move up to 1000cc or start with the 1000's?

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

new Busa will be softer and more sportcruiser than the actual version, including abs etc. good chance it will crack the 200hp barrier.
much better are the rumours on a naked based on the Busa, basically acopy of the bmw k1200r concept... (which i own and love btw!)

    cheers

YES, YES, YES! I cannot stress how important it is you start out with smaller bikes and gradually climb upwards. Bikes are really really fast, but also much more difficult to drive fast than a car, and also much more accident prone (more things can go wrong, and the marging between safe driving and falling is much narrower tha a car). And it only takes one unlucky fall you really inflict some damage. As the saying goes "There are two groups of sportbike riders: there are those who have crashed and those who have not crashed yet.."

Best to start with a CB500 or something along those lines. A 600cc sportbike, may not have the power of a 1000cc but its still very fast and dangerous, first start with a more "noble" "tammed" non-sportbike. The 1000cc is like a GT2, but the 600cc is still like a GT3, not a car to start with, better to start with a turbo or carrera, and in bikes the difference is even bigger. Then move up to a 600cc or even 1000cc depending on your driving and use.

    Excellent advice, Carlos,

As a neurologist, I have seen too many a motorcycle accident, and keep in mind that even if one is an excellent cyclist who take all precautions, the motorcycle has only two wheels, and one is completely vulnerable to severe head trauma, even whilst helmeted, at the mercy of a car driver on four wheels with more protection around him. One of my college jobs was taking call at night as the night technician for the local eye and human parts bank (I would enucleate-remove-the eyes from a decedent for corneal transplants), and many of our eye donors were motorcycle ("Donorcycle") riders. So be extra careful dudes.

i know what it is & how it works but thanks for the lesson

Good advice, Al & Carlos! As dangerous as it is to drive our sports cars (and we have lost some good people this year), it is MUCH more dangerous to drive sportbikes. They look like tremendous fun (and great value), but I am too worried about safety to buy one. Enjoy your bikes, but be extra careful (and be extra observant of traffic around you).

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

I second Carlos..... The amount of control, experience, reason and luck it takes not to crash with a sports bike is huge..... Start with something not too powerfull and very slowly make your step up... A bigger engine doesn't mean a faster bike. If you get a 750 ccm custom , or even bigger, it is much more safe and easy than a 600 ccm sportsbike.

Hmmmm...I didn't know a wheel could suffer head trauma. Front wheel or rear?

    Re: Somethin for Carlos

I visited one of my friends in the hospital after a motor cycle accident... that was the end of my ambitions
Although he is still riding a bike

    Airbags on bikes?

    Here's a curious new development:
