    Sports exhaust

    My question is about the Sports Exhaust option. To some this might be a dumb question , but anyway....

    I plan to get the sports exhaust option on a C4S. I know you can turn the sports "sound" on and off from inside the vehicle. I plan to put on aftermaket tips. So, where does the "sound" originate from? If they come from the tips, and by adding the tips, will I be able to turn it on and off still, or will the new tips result in hearing the exhaust constantly?
    Do you know what I'm trying to say? I want to add aftermarket tips and still be able to turn the "sound" on and off.

    Hi, as far I know the sound is generated by a bypass
    (a valve), not by the tips.
    Let me know wich tips you wane install
    bcs soon I got my C4s with XLF

    The Porsche sport exhaust uses a "clap system" with a vacuum hose (I hope this is the right english word for it ).
    Yes, you can switch sound for the inside of the car but as far as I know, this is not officially approved by Porsche and has to be retrofitted by your dealer (no big deal though ).

    No problem whatsoever with aftermarket tips, the tips are not involved in the "sound making process".

    I heard the reason the put the on/off switch is because of Swiss ordinance/regulation other than Swiss no other country requires on/off button.

    However there is a quick fix that, you can have it on all the time. When rear engine lid is opened there is a small brown connector on the right side of the engine (the only brown connector). The connector can be easily pulled out and be disconnected, now your Exahust is on all the time .

    As far as I remember, the switch is not legal for any country.

    I understand the principle with the sports exhaust, but does the sports exhaust change the performance,0-60 ?

    Fitted from the factory, it comes with a switch to disable (make quiet)

    Well if anything it makes it slower because from what I understand it's alot heavier.

    Another question, what kind of exhuast comes on the GT3? Is it the same as the sport exhuast or different entirely? Which is louder?

    A friend of mine has the cats on his 993 but from there basically straight pipes with some baffles in them. BEST sounding car i've ever heard, amazing. Does anyone have an opinion on whether or not this could be done to a GT3 and what the draw backs would be if any?

    the switch on original factory installed PSE is standard in the
    USA on all PSE since the beginning of MY 2003.

    I have PSE on my 2001 996 C2. It's wired "open" all the time and it sounds fantastic. The sound has also improved over time/miles it seems. I had the Gemballa sports exhaust on my 1999 C2 and I hated it. I've heard many aftermarket mufflers first hand and IMO the RUF (was my first choice) and the PSE systems sound the best...no comparison! They "bark" enough to remind you of that even though the 996 is water cooled, there could be an old air cooled flat six "whomping" behind your head. It just worked out that I ended up going with PSE but either way you will be smiling every time the needles swings past 3000RPM.

    Sorry, you're absolutely right, I forgot (getting old... ) that Porsche sells only the second version of the PSE (fits ALL 996, even before MY 2002) with the switch as standard. Unfortunately the second version of the sport exhaust isn't as loud as the first version, it has been modified because the first version caused a lot of trouble for Porsche, especially in Germany (people disabled the vacuum hose and the exhaust was "open" all the time, making it illegal for street driving).
    I'm not sure if disabling the vaccum hose in the "open" position of the exhaust makes a difference on the second version of the PSE but it might be the case.

    In my opinion, the PSE is the best sounding sport exhaust for the 996

    Thanks for all the info guys....

    DFGA0001 - I'm not sure which tips I might go with. I may just get the stainless steel Porsche tips, or I also like the look of the Remus brand tips.
