I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! PICS

SHARE my PAIN !!! Anyone know what a new 19" wheel costs? Dealer was closed today had to just have it flat bedded over there !! I was coming of an exit ramp and the car next to me crowded me a little and I thought I had more room off to the right, but I was WRONG !! Bummer. But at least it doesn't look too bad... looks like just a new wheel and tire.....

Ok so let's guess total cost to replace everything.... guesses anyone?

I'm going to make a table out of the old wheel !!

Oh and Porsche Roadside assistance was pretty quick and very nice. I think they just farm stuff out to AAA. A guy in a regular tow truck came in 15min and said the flat bed would be there in about 30 min... so not too bad. Of course I have to pay for the flatbed since it was an accident not a breakdown....

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! PICS

    John,
    I'm glad it wasn't worse!
    My wild guess: $1,350.00 USD.
    Be careful brother!

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! PICS

My dealer told me a full set of Carrera Classics (I know your wheels are different) with tires retailed at $5300, so I think SVN is gonna be spot on.

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! PICS

Yea - that's about what I figured... I'm hoping there is no rear suspension damage... I checked back there and nothing was bent - so maybe I got away lucky... Just glad it didn't cause a crash and no one got hurt except my poor wheel.....

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! P

    SOB! Sorry to see that.

At least you avoided yet more disappointment by trying to use the can of goop to effect a roadside repair as Porsche would have us do. (just kidding, trying to see the humor)

They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

Uh, don't give up on the wheel just yet. They CAN be fixed. Some amazing stuff those guys do. Sorry I don't have any links. I've seen before and after pics which were incredible.

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

MMD - I don't think I want that wheel no matter how good they are at fixing them.... rather just pay up for a new one.

Also ... what do you mean about the goop? It worked GREAT. I filled that whole right up.. no problem.... yea... uh hu....

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

This place claims $129 for a wheel fix and shows some pics... not as bad as mine I don't think but pretty bad.....

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

The real cost will be suspension parts if they have been damaged by the impact . Someone will really need to go over the car in that area carefully to see what parts are damaged besides the wheel .

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

I never noticed the spot for the tow hook in any pictures until now. Your accident is unfortunate and I hope that you don't have any suspension damage. I've been through that before, a corner a little to fast and a little bump can do a lot of damage.

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! PICS

The tire is about $250 (check tire rack), and the rim can be repaired to just like new for about $200. There are several places here in the south bay that do this sort of work. The rim will look as good as new, and will be structurally sound and safe.

Here is a shop I highly recommend. All of the local Porsche dealers use them for repairs like yours.

And next time watch where you are going!

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

$1200 bucks should do it...Check out these guys for prices on that wheel...they are in CA

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

Some guy is selling a set of 4 rims on ebay. Maybe you could works something out with him.

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

    hey John SF,
if you have decided you want to fix your wheel but don't trust the site you found, you can give Rector in Burlingame a try. Same thing happened to me before and they fixed it for $150 only. the fix was flawless. let me know if you have any questions.

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

That's right, the wheel can be repaired. I once inquired about this to my dealer and they recomended a shop in LA that does the repairs. Actually, they take your damaged wheel and then give you once that's already been repaired from their stock for about $300. You're in and out in the amount of time it takes to change a tire.

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

ouch john, that must have sucked! that's why i just don't take chances period on cars like that repairs are just too pricey and takes forever for stuff to get done down here

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! PICS

Fixing the rim is nuts, your life depends on it, you can also get used syringes and 2nd hand parachutes, if money is tight, skip two oil changes and buy yourself a rim.

I could not agree with you more. Looking at the kind of damage on that wheel, I would never trust anyone to fix that wheel. Do yourself a favor, buy a new wheel.

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! PICS

Sorry to hear about your accident John . At least your OK and thats the most important thing. On the bright side this could be a good excuse to replace your wheels with cool after market one .

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! P

Sad to hear John... San jose's wheel tech works just fine and I think the cost of 1 19" classics would be around 1155.00. I was quoted around 4620 for a set...

Good Luck Bay Area Bud ...

No,getting the wheel repaired is not a problem it's fine if it works for you. Those repair guys are very specialized and they know what they are doing.

Keep in mind we have cars that don't even get to 100mph on a sustained routine basis.

A new wheel would be a better idea if we lived alongside the autobahn and had a girlfriend 50 miles south and a job 50 miles north.

Re: I smashed my 997 rear wheel on a curb... demolished !! P

Had a runflat this aferternoon..Was lucky I didn't demolisch the tyre entirely.
I saw very nice people in Ypres (english people, from yorkshire, they were visiting flanders fields), they had a compressor with them and i could inflate the tyre and got to the tyrespecialist safely. Thx to the friendly english!!!

I had a wheel fixed once. It was from my 2002 Viper. I scraped a curb while parking. The very edge of the wheel had a 1 inch grind mark, it wasn't dented or cracked at all. The wheel came out perfect, no way you could tell it ever happened.

Wheel fixes are okay for minor wheel lip scraps. With the type of damage in that picture there's no way in hell I'd consider fixing that wheel. With a big crack in it ? Sorry dude but that's just plum crazy.

besides - I doubt you would even find anybody willing to do the repair on a wheel with that type of damage.

    Dealer says $2,200

    Apprx

    Wheel - $1,100
    Tire - $400
    Alignment $250
    MISC + Labor $450 ?

    hmmm

    Re: Dealer says $2,200

    I agree with STRADALE!

    Not worth the risk!

    Re: Dealer says $2,200

Get a new one, you'll always have a nagging doubt if you are out for a drive and pushing on. Sorry to see the damage, looked pretty bad - must have been quite a thump.

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

When I picked up my car from Braman, WPB they sold me an insurance policy for 400.00 usd for road hazard on wheels and tires. Full Replacement, life of vehicle. Do you guys have anything like this?

Re: They can fix wheels looking worse than yours.

Holy Cow! How did you manage to do THAT to your car?! Glad you're OK. Hopefully your car will be good as new in no time...drive safe man..
