    Busted Windshield & NAV

Got nailed by a rock earlier today. What started out as a dime sized crater has now turned into a 12 inch long crack and growing by the hour. Anyone out there know what a new windshield goes for at the dealer? I know I can probably get one somewhere else cheaper, but call me crazy, I want Porsche glass.

Also, I've noticed that my NAV unit has been acting up lately. Seems like the hotter it gets the more problems I run into. It takes about 10 minutes for NAV to start up, and when it does it says I'm "off road" or it can't give me route directions. Also, when trying to input an address I get a "DVD Unreadable" message sometimes, or it takes about 10 minutes or so to "load data". After I got home today I took the DVD out of the player and it was scorching hot. I wonder if having the DVD unit mounted so close to the hood that it gets way too hot for normal operation. Anyone else have this same experience? Seems to me that high 90's, and even 100 degrees, should have been considered when deciding where to put the unit. Oh, the disc itself, while very hot, showed no signs of scratches, etc. It's performed well in the past, but not recently.

    Thanks in advance!

    Mike

Your insurance comprehensive should take care of the windshield (minus deductible - typically a small amount).

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

I'm not sure if you've made a claim with your auto insurance lately, but my experience has been that unless you make a claim for a large amount it's not worth it. I had a claim a couple years ago with my auto insurance for a cracked windshield on my BMW and they raised my rates the following renewal because I had a claim filed. The windshield ran $800 and my deductible was only $50 so I thought it made sense at the time. It's cost me more in the long run. Now I have a $1,000 deductible and will only make a claim if it's a significant amount above that.

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

It depends on the insurance. Some will not consider glass damage a reason to raise premiums and count a claim, some will. But I agree with using the insurance only for large scale damages and balancing the small stuff on my own checkbook if possible.

Re:NAV . Not sure if it's the same for the 997, but the Boxster's manual states that the SatNAV unit can indeed get too hot, and a Tequipment fan can help to address the issue. I don't have the part# here right now though. Will dig out the manual later and add it if I can find it.

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

When I replaced the windshield in my Boxster for similar reasons, I found out who the dealer uses--dealers don't do their own glass work. The company was on my insurer's list of approved vendors, and they came to my house and did the work. The car has to set overnight for the seal to cure so it is best to do it at home.

I don't think you'll need to worry about the quality of the glass. Unless it's changed recently, there are no aftermarket windshields or side glass on the new Porsches, so you're assured of getting OEM glass.

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

Make sure you get the windshield that has the proper antenna embedded in it.

good luck with both nav and glass.

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

It also depends on what state you live in, it's a state law in Florida that the insurance company must pay for a replacement windshield and there is no deductable. Whether or not it's a factory windshield is something to argue about. Usually, the non-factory replacement windshields are a little softer, so they are more subject to pitting.

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

Yep, one free windshield per vehicle per year in Florida. Probably raises our premiums but I think it's a good thing.

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

Get a different insurance company!! I also live in northern california, and when I called my agent about a cracked windshield on my BMW, she told me not to drive the car any longer (unless it was to the repair shop) for my safety. She even volunteered to call a specialist to fix it at my home, but told me I could have it fixed anywhere I chose.

It was covered under my comprehensive (even though it happened while vehicle was moving) AND there was no change in my insurance premium.

In your case, I would agree that Porsche glass with the antenna is mandatory.

    Good luck

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

My NAVI started acting up a few months ago. It first began not showing half of a screen of streets. Later it would not load DVD data at all. I was unable to eject the DVD from the DVD player. I reported the problems to my dealer and they ordered a new DVD player and Navi DVD. Once replaced all is now well again.

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

This happened to me recently. The glass was replaced with Porsche OEM glass by a local supplier (Autoglass here in the UK). They did a v good job although my windscreen washers stopped working which meant a trip to the dealer to sort it out. Don't know if the two are related but it happened to someone else on here so could well be.

Don't suppose your NAV problems are to do with the crack in your windscreen?

    Re: Busted Windshield & NAV

It is not NAVI but my chrono watch went nuts above 100F. It was working fine at lower temp but after a few weeks later finding temp problem, it happened at lower temp also. So dealer replaced it.
