I second that cartouche, I was just in N.O. Aug.14-19, to visit a friend.. she's a nurse, and of course had to stay at Charity hospital. They are working in 90 degree conditions (inside the hospital), no running water, and are bathing with baby wipes. In addition to all the regular patients, she has got several rescuers (police, nat'l guard, etc) who have come in with gunshot wounds from their rescue efforts. The generators have failed, they can't get gas, and the dead bodies are being stored in a room that is not refrigerated. Her family was lucky to get out, but she is stuck, doing Gods work. I would humbly recommend everyone to try and help out in some way, whether its donations to the red cross, or other types of relief efforts. I know that everyone on this board has been blessed, including me.. thanks for listening

I don't know how much information you are getting but I am certain it is more than we are getting. Be advised that almost everything I am telling you is from direct observation or rumor from reasonable sources. They are allowing limited internet access, so I hope to send this dispatch today.
Personally, my family and I are fine. My family is safe in Jackson, MS, and I am now a temporary resident of the Ritz Carleton Hotel in New Orleans. I figured if it was my time to go, I wanted to go in a place with a good wine list. In addition, this hotel is in a very old building on Canal Street that could and did sustain little damage. Many of the other hotels sustained significant loss of windows, and we expect that many of the guests may be evacuated here.
Things were obviously bad yesterday, but they are much worse today. Overnight the water arrived. Now Canal Street (true to its origins) is indeed a canal. The first floor of all downtown buildings is underwater. I have heard that Charity Hospital and Tulane are limited in their ability to care for patients because of water. Ochsner is the only hospital that remains fully functional. However, I spoke with them today and they too are on generator and losing food and water fast. The city now has no clean water, no sewerage system, no electricity, and no real communications. Bodies are still being recovered floating in the floods. We are worried about a cholera epidemic. Even the police are without effective communications. We have a group of armed police here with us at the hotel that are admirably trying to exert some local law enforcement. This is tough because looting is now rampant. Most of it is not malicious looting. These are poor and desperate people with no housing and no medical care and no food or water trying to take care of themselves and their families. Unfortunately, the people are armed and dangerous. We hear gunshots frequently. Most of Canal street is occupied by armed looters who have a low threshold for discharging their weapons. We hear gunshots frequently. The looters are using makeshift boats made of pieces of styrofoam to access. We are still waiting for a significant national guard presence.
The health care situation here has dramatically worsened overnight. Many people in the hotel are elderly and small children. Many other guests have

I have not posted in a very long time.
My hometown is Mobile, Alabama which is about 130 miles east from where the eye of Katrina passed over in Louisiana and Mississippi. Even that far away our downtown area was flooded with 11 feet of water and most people have wind damage.
And its not just New Orleans who is suffering. This catastrophe was the worst in US history according to the American Red Cross. See for yourself -

These last ten months haven't been very much pleasant: the Tsunami, the unusual floods anf fires in Europe these past weeks and now the catastrophy in the US and another hurricane coming to Japan.
As I could see on TV last night, the situation in Louisiana is extremely difficult, my heart and throughts are with all the victims, their families and those still waiting to be rescued.

True, I was down in N.O a few weeks ago.. their law enforcement is worlds apart from what we have here.. corruption is very widespread, a somewhat common occurrence..not to mention the lawlessness that was occurring BEFORE the disaster with the general crime, it is outta control

Red Cross all the way. Not much more we can do from Europe I'm afraid.
Having lived in NC for over 4 years and hopefully returning in the near future, even the comparatively harmless exposure to an ice storm and couple of weak hurricanes has brought awareness and weariness regarding nature's forces in the Southeastern United States to my mind. I've also seen Andrew's devastation first hand as I happened to be in Miami 2 weeks afterwards. Suffice to say that if my state gov tells me to run, I pack my emergency box into the trunk and do just that. However, I can only imagine what it means for the people of NO not to have a place they could come back to. I hope the relief efforts kick in soonish, and the displaced folks will be told where they can find shelter/food for now and money to re-build for later.

After an expected catastrophy, to survive during 5 days in a devastated city, without any help from the authorities, you and your childrens and family need maybe to drink something , to eat something , and to wear dry clothes too. And that's more important than private property IMHO. And when you quit your house or shop without any regard for the people who can't run away because they don't have no car, no money, no education, can you so severely blame them to rob some gold you left behind ?
Here in crazyland, we pay crazy taxes (on cars, on gas for example : more than 6.5 $ a gallon...), to provide help to our poor people instead of asking to shoot them as "looters"
Here in crazyland you can't find guns in supermarkets...
Here in crazyland, when the army comes to help fellow citizens in humanitarian missions, they don't wear weapons
Here in crazyland, when we give lessons of democracy, at least we're disarmed.
I expressed my solidarity to all the victims, including the looters, it's a fact. Victims of the hurricane and victims of the organized misery.
Your jails are proportionally 400% more populated than ours. A different way to fix the social problems...

I don't wish to provoke you, but I think what Sloppy was trying to explain was that none of us have any real idea how we would behave in such a terrible situation. I have children and believe in God, but if I saw them crying in hunger in a situation of such total social collapse, I would not hesitate to steal food or clothing. What is shocking is not that the looters are excrement, but how quickly a so called civilsed society collapses into complete anarchy.

I think for us Americans, it's unacceptable to not be able to defend ourselves and our families if the situation arises. Do you see that point at all? Maybe in Europe there is not the problem of crime and so households don't have to worry about homes being broken into. I don't know, you tell me. But can you imagine what the crime rate in America would be if all of a sudden, all law abiding citizens had their guns removed from their homes? Do you think we would be more or less safe.

You also probably have the sense to get your family out of Dodge! Walk if you must! There was very ample warning- many choose to ignore. Of course some didn't have a choice due to medical reasons. The poverty argument is pretty shaky- I've seen many "healthy" people, and many with nice clothes/shoes. This ,in part, is what happens when you rely too much on the government!
Again,many are being very noble- of course, as usual, the focus is always on the negative!

None of us have been put in the situation we see on TV. What we don't see is that 95% of the people in New Orleans are good people that will NOT break the law except for extreme circumstances eg(taking food or water to survive). What TV is showing is the 5% that will do anything at anytime. Many of these 5% probally already have a criminal background. We should not pass judgement on these people until we have lived in their shoes.
