    Gearing for Boxster 987

I am undecided as to which gearbox to go for in my future 987. Do any members know the ratios of the 2 gearboxes (5 speed manual and 6 speed manual) including MPH per 1000RPM.

    Re: Gearing for Boxster 987

I'm glad I did this now! Here you go. Ratios are in the Price Guide / spec book.

    Re: Gearing for Boxster 987

If you're considering the 6-speed/PASM upgrade for the base 987, strongly consider switching to the 987S instead. If you haven't got the cash for the S, I'd probably save the money and stick with 5-speed. I think it's more than adequate for the UK. Basically, the 4th of the 5-speed is spread between the 4th and 5th of the 6-speed. You'll probably find it difficult to explore that bit on the public road, unless you want to use the extra gear for better choice when driving for economy at low revs.

    Have you test-driven a 987 and 987S back-to-back?

Every road test I've read has criticised the 2.7 Boxster's 5 speed gearbox. I'd go for the 6 speed without hesitation. Scandalous when you think that the new MX5, costing not much more than half the money, comes with a 6 speed as standard.

Aah, but it's not how many you've got, it's what you do with them that counts!

I didn't get to drive the 5-speed unfortunately. (Only had 987 Tip at the time). CharlesL might have better comment on the quality of the 5-speed, and it's use in real-life driving.

Here are graphic chart versions with the specific ratios listed.

Ooh! That's very spangley indeed. Ta!

    Re: Gearing for Boxster 987

According to my sales person, the 6 speed is the same on the 997, is it true?

The gear change on my 5 speed 987 is absolutely spot on, much better than on my old 6 speed 986 "S".

I don't think they are, the 987 one is by Getrag, and the 997 is by Aisin

I have to agree - I am really happy with my 5 speed although the 2-3 change was a bit notchy when I first took delivery and took about 1500 miles to bed in. Most of the criticism I have seen of the 5 speed on the 2.7 is that a Pounds35K car shouldn't have a 5 speed as standard these days, which is probably true.

When I first visited the dealer I had 6 speed + PASM on my option list but the dealer suggested the benefit on the 2.7 would be small, so I did the same sort of analysis as presented earlier in this thread before I ordered mine and came to the conclusion that the only place you would benefit from the 6 speed would be track days.

    Re: Gearing for Boxster 987

as I said in previous threads,

the throw in the 5 spd is definitely shorter.

The S I tried had notchy gear shifts and rubbery feel. very imprecise.
but I put it down to the demo I drove.

but my 5 spd shifts like hot knife thru butter

    Re: Gearing for Boxster 987

If not for my occasional passenger reminding me that I do in fact have a 6th gear, I wouldn't use it at all here in the UK. Can't imagine any benefits of the optional 6-speed gearbox for the base Boxster unless you drive a lot of Autobahn kilometers.
