    Auf der IAA 2003 wird Mercedes den neuen SLR der Weltöffentlichkeit vorstellen. Heute hat Mercedes alle Fakten und Details bekannt gegeben. Das 5,5 Liter V8-Kompressor Trieberwerkt leistet 626 PS bei 6.500 U/min und 780 NM von 3250-5000 U/min. Der Motor wiegt 232kg. Der Kompressor wird über eine Kupplung in Bruchteilen von einer Sekunde nicht merklich zugeschaltet. So kann im Teilastbereich Sprit gespart werden. Durch die aufwendig eingebauten Katalysatoren und die Sidepipes können die Passagiere tiefer angeordnet werden, da keine Abgasrohre unter der Fahrgastzelle herführen. Dabei werden die Matten aus Carbonfasern nicht mehr von Hand, sondern maschinell verarbeitet. In der Frontstruktur der SLR-Karosserie beweist der innovative Faser-Verbundwerkstoff seine sicherheitstechnischen Qualitäten besonders eindrucksvoll. Hier genügen zwei rund 620 Millimeter lange, kegelförmig gestaltete CFK-Elemente von nur je 3,4 Kilogramm Gewicht, um bei einem definierten Frontalaufprall die gesamte Crashenergie zu absorbieren, ohne die für die Passagiere noch verträglichen Verzögerungswerte zu überschreiten. Die CFK-Träger sind mit der nachgeordneten Alustruktur des Motorträgers verschraubt; im vorderen Bereich erfolgt die Anbindung an die übrige Karosseriestruktur durch einen Querträger und eine liegende Sandwichplatte aus CFK. Damit ist der SLR das weltweit erste Serienautomobil mit einer vollständig aus Carbonfasern gefertigten Front-Crashstruktur. Die beiden konischen Längsträger der Front-Crashstruktur setzen sich aus einem Körper und einem innen liegenden Steg zusammen - eine Grundkonfiguration, die sich während der rund vierjährigen Entwicklungszeit dieses SLR-Bauteils am besten bewährte. Das Ziel der Ingenieure aus der Vorentwicklung des Mercedes-Benz Technology Centers in Sindelfingen und der DaimlerChrysler-Forschung war es, nicht nur Längsträgerelemente mit einem beispiellos hohen Niveau an passiver Sicherheit bei gleichzeitig hoher Steifigkeit und Festigkeit und möglichst geringem Gewicht zu entwickeln, sondern auch Fertigungskonzepte mit hohem Automatisierungsgrad für eine Serienproduktion zu realisieren. Dabei betraten die Fachleute technisches Neuland.
    Ebenfalls außergewöhnlich ist das Gepäckraumangebot des Hochleistungs-Sportwagens. Insgesamt steht im Heck ein mit Leder und Velours ausgekleideter Kofferraum mit einem Fassungsvolumen von 272 Litern zur Verfügung. In Klappen darunter sind überdies Staufächer für die Behälter für Waschwasser und Bremsflüssigkeit, die beiden Bordbatterien und Werkzeug leicht zugänglich untergebracht. Diese ungewöhnliche Anordnung wählten die Konstrukteure, um eine sportwagengerechte Gewichtsverteilung mit niedrigem Schwerpunkt nahe der Fahrzeugmitte zu erzielen.
    Aluminium ist für die Fahrwerksentwickler des neuen Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren der Werkstoff. Die Achsquerlenker bestehen aus geschmiedetem Aluminium, während die Radträger aus Aluminium gegossen wurden.
