    I bet the only thing more frustrating then losing a race like that is knowing you own one of the few cars in the world that would have won.

    On the serious note now is that it will be a real bummer if the new 06 400hp M3 kicks the 997s butt , we dont want that ..

    I think the 997S will still maintain slight edge over the upcoming M3. M3 will probably again weigh 3400+ lbs., unless they're implementing (uncharacteristic for BMW M) wholesale changeover to aluminum or CF components.

    Just found the article where Autocar did a comparison test between the F430 F1 and the new M5. The bare figures are :-

    0 - 60mph M5 4.6 secs F430 4.4 secs
    0 - 100mph M5 9.8 secs F430 9.4 secs
    0 - 150mph M5 21.0 secs F430 21.5 secs

    Some of the quotes from the article "when the F430 reached its zenith, the M5 gripped harder, composed itself better, covered the ground faster". "No matter how hard I tried, how fast I drove, I still couldn't drop the bloke in the BMW".

    Perhaps the most telling section was the penultimate paragraph.. "Okay, I can hear what all you so-called Tifosi and Ferrari aficionados are no doubt screaming right now: that Ferraris are about an awful lot more than pure speed, and in any case if you want to go really, really fast then buy a Caterham or a Radical or a motorbike. But come on; don't tell me someone who's happy to spray Pounds130,000 in the direction of an F430, complete with carbon brakes and sports interior as this particular example was, will be happy to be blown off the road by a BMW. With four people on board. And a bootful (trunkful) of luggag. No, I don't reckon they will either."

    As for the M6 vs C2S encounter this is what they had to say : "Read nothing into the similarity between BMW's claimed 4.6sec for the 0 - 62 mph sprint and the actual 4.6sec we recorded for a Carrera S for the fractionally shorter run from 0 - 60 mph. Several tenths of that would have been provided by the locattion of the Porsche's 3.8 litre, 350bhp flat six motor right above the rear wheels. Read more into the the BMW's ability to hit 125mph from rest in 14sec flat; the Carrera S would struggle to get there in much below 17sec. And read most into the fact that the Carrera S will stop accelerating at 182mph; were you to relieve the V10 of its electronic shackles, the M6 would keep going all the way to 205mph. A Maserati MC12 will go no faster."

    In the end the C2S got the nod because of it being the superior drivers car and cheaper by some Pounds15,000 GBP.

    Could the difference have been the fact that the M5 owner just had to "step on it" where as you had to row through a few gear changes?

    The M5 is the sleeper car of the year. It gives you everything one would want in a car. Superior sport car performance, luxury, comfort and able storage and legroom. The S is no match for it and the 430 can barely out perform it.

    What it does not have is style and exclusivity (very much like the Porsche). My suggestion is all 997 owners turn tail and run when encountering one of these monsters. The 997 TT will do well to stay with it and if it does not, they ought trash the car immediately.

    ISUK , thanks for your finds and the M5 is certainly a dark horse what a machine you got to laugh at that statement above about 4 people and the trunk fall you could imagine some kid in the back giving you the finger right , very sweet . The read I did was a quicky off the Tesco shelf , thanks for clarifying ..

    Sad day when BMW makes a better "sports" car than Porsche. I guess we can sigh in relief that Porsche now makes a better SUV than BMW.

    Good one. You evidently didn't notice that the M5 was half a second ahead of the F430 at 150mph. And bear in mind this is the F1 version of the F430 being compared with the M5. The M5 is humbling a lot of sports cars now and is something of a real performance bargain. There is no contest in the looks or ultimate desirability stakes but it must be annoying to buy a car like the F430 and not be able to shake off a BMW saloon

    Autocar also ran a story two weeks ago about the forthcoming BMW modern interpretation of their M1 Ferrari challenger from 1979. Most likely to be badged Z10, it is entering the arena to do battle with a rumoured 1200kg kerbweight and an even more highly tuned version of the V10 from the M5 giving a power to weight ratio of 458bhp. The F430 has 333bhp per tonne in comparison whilst the Carrera GT has 410bhp per tonne. The car is reported to have similar dimensions to the Lamborghini Gallardo. If it sees the light of day it should liven up the market a bit.

    In the same issue they were also pointing out that most of the prestige car makers have come to realise that it is the price segment occupied by the 997 range that is enjoying the best profit returns as buyers of cars such as the Aston Vanquish are suddenly realising that new models such as the AM V8 are offering similar, usable real world performance for half the cost. It was an interesting read.

    UPDATE: Just read on a BMW forum that BMW Germany are offering to increase the speed limiter on customer M5s from the current 155mph limit to 190mph from September for owners who request it and who's cars have covered a minimum of 1,250 miles i.e.run in.

    Road & Track magazine timed the F430 from 0-60 in 3.5 and from 0-100 in 8.1, which is considerably quicker than the times previously posted here. What does the new M5 weigh?

    Remember you are comparing US mph to UK mph which is slightly different and accounts for the timing discrepancies. The M5 weighs 1830kg vs 1450kg for the F430.

    Let me just clarify my comments. I never meant to say that the M5 is a more superior car than the C2S, or the SL65 is a better sports car than the F430. My emphasis were on their mid range acceleration capabilities ONLY.

    In this aspect and this aspect only the 65 reigns supreme.

    Don't let it happen again, i'll give you a golden tip...
    According to a test i've read in autovisie:
    They made a hardcore start with the launchcontrolsystem with the new M6 and it got to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds... but to make this excercise again they had to wait 5 minutes, because that's a restriction for safety of the gearbox , becaue otherwise it gets overheated.Normally launchcontrol makes a lift-off at 3500rpm, but than it's restricted at 2000 rpm and then it starts a lot smoother so.........

    Force him to start again within 5 minutes and you get your chance to beat him (or is your 997S a tiptronic?, in that case you won't stand a chance)...

    The times in Autocar were suspect and even the writer alluded to the 430 possibly being either sick or the previous test run of the 430 in Maranello was in a car that was juiced. He indicated the 430 he was driving did not feel as fast.

    The M5 weighs close to 3900lbs. The 430 3350 lbs. The difference in HP is around 15 in favor of the M5. Based on weight and HP the performance of the two cars does not make sense.

    I also read the article on the BMW Z10. Thankfully it will not be introduced for at least a few years

    Regarding the comparison to the S I thought it is unfair because honestly the S just is not in the same class as the M5. It would be like comparing the 430 to the CGT.

    You are being economical with your quotes there. The writer also stated that he began to wonder if the "original left hand drive (F430) launch car was just an 'unusually good' example". He also cited the lack of low down torque compared to the M5.

    You are being unusually magnanimous and actually being almost fair on the 997 so it would be churlish to throw any more quotes back that were unfavourable about the F430 vs the M5

    So M5 0-62mph of 4.6 is not real, it must be faster if it smoked a C2S. What is the true 0-62 of the M5
