Why does Porsche have to put big wings and front spoilers...

...on their most fast cars? I don't want to start a war here, but why PAG can make some more cleaner lines out of their most fast cars? If you look to Ferraris, they don't need to have those active rear wings and big front bumpers to keep them glue to the road, even the Murcielago and Gallardo don't make use of those "race" tipe wings. The new GT3 has a rear wing that reminds me the horrible Escort Cosworth big rear wing, it really gives a cheap looking. If you other brands like Maserati, or even the powerful AMG Mercedes have cleaner lines without the use of "tuned race tipe parts".

One last comment, have been in Monaco recently, and there were some 996 Turbo next to the Modena and Murcielago, well let me just say that the Porsche look poor next to the Modena, and next to the Lambo it even gets worse. It's time for them to drop some more radical and charming lines to the unique and only 911. Even the interior is the same has a Boxster. I'm not saying that's dull, I've a Boxster myself, but please, give us something more exoctic in that department too. Am I the only one who think like this among Porsche lovers?

As far as I know, the Enzo as well as the Gallardo have electrical rearwings, but they are much smaller, more like the one used by Porsche in the Boxster.
I think the typical (=ancient) Porsche 911 design is the reason for the need of such massive rear spoilers at high speeds.

Also I think some people like it.
    It's purposeful andmean looking.
It's definitly not there for show.
They could to an flat underbody, etc They have for the GT actually, but also in terms of costs, I think it is cheaper to put a big rear wing than an elec one with flat underbody!
    Fanch.

Re: Why does Porsche have to put big wings and front spoilers...

agreed! they are a must at high speed. ferrari claims that they reach the same effect with their underside diffusers -- however, according to "sportauto" the ground effect is not that good, the downforce with an ordinary rear spoiler is much better. can't remember which car they tested, though. i think it was the 575MM.

and, personally, i like rear spoilers -- at least sometimes and with extreme sport cars. of course "beautiful" is the wrong word, but i really do like them! diablo GT, ferrari F40, GT3 RS... a nice wing suits an extreme car well IMO

and ferrari proofs that a rear spoiler may be of some use... think of the 360 GT. IMO it would have suited the challenge stradale good as well

Think it was the 360 Modena, at least they couldn't prove the promised downforce effect.

Re: Why does Porsche have to put big wings and front spoilers...

Because they are functional. I think NOT putting on wings and spoilers because of style issues is almost as bad as those ricerocket import cars that have big wings that aren't functional. The problem is that many people don't understand what wings mean, they are not for style (although I think they look good on Porsches). Wings should make you think of racecars, not rice rockets. Don't let ricers ruin the image.

If you ask someone who has a rice rocket why he put side skirts on his car, he'll say it looks "cool." They copy what the first people did with modified cars. In the beginning it was to copy the racecars. The response about side skirts should be that it keeps air out from under the car.

The 996 turbo does look like a plain jane next to ferraris and lamborghinis, however in my opinion, the GT2 and GT3 do not.

Re: Why does Porsche have to put big wings and front spoilers...

Yes, they are highly function, but I believe that J.Seven's point is that the cars of other marques seem to generate more downforce or less lift with no wings or smaller ones at that. Perhaps this is true, but I agree wholeheartedly with Rossi in that the classic shape of the 911 is at fault. Many cars with rounded rear ends suffer this problem, such as the Audi TT, Nissan 350z, and Chrysler Crossfire.
