    Drove a Boxster S yesterday...

    I thought I'd walk away dying, just wanting to never get out of the drivers seat, but I did, I was completely unaffected by it all. The steering was feelsome and precise, but the car wasn't at all particuoarily fast? My Audi is just a tad bit slower, and that doesn't speak well for Porsche. Perhaps it was the tiprtonic transimission in this particular car? I dont know? and sport mode didnt do much of anything. I'm going to drive the car again this weekend, maybe then perhaps I'll like it, I want to. I didnt get to push the car all that hard either.

    The Tip adds a second to the 0-60 ... I suggest you drive it again, demand stick and really push it....also keep in mind that Porsches aren't really ALL about straight line acceleration...so much more to the car, especially the handling...

    I need to take it somewhere where there are plenty of twists, like through laurel canyon or something? I can't do stick because work requires me to take the occasional trip behind the wheel, and living in the city going back and fourth, it's just not for me.

    If you are anywhere near NYC like myself - take it on a drive on the Saw Mill Parkway or the Bronx River parkway - lots of turns intended for slow speeds...I took the car there and was absolutely stunned by the fact that I didn't use the brake pedal once (no downshifting either) - since I used to brake often there with other vehicles (BMW 330 and Range Rover)....the handling is unreal as is the balance. These are the kinds of roads you need to try them on to really get a feel of what a 987 S is capable of. In terms of commuting, I understand the Tip ( I don't drive to the city but if I did...I wouldn't go with a stick either), but getting a Tip negates the extra money you'd pay for an S model...and the Boxster deserves the S engine, the base model is too weak IMHO. Driving the car in the city also gives you the opportunity to survey the vehicle's superb suspension and how it absorbs bumps. Contrary to popular belief, it actually handles these well, with minimal jarring and rarely any harshness in the cabin. There are two Porsche dealers you can go to in test driving these --- to do the Saw Mill/Bronx River route in Westchester (by me), check out Pepe Porsche. In Manhattan, go to Manhattan Motorcars - if you are going there, message me, I purchased mine from there and they are absolutely phenomenal to deal with (aka no pretension, walk in with gym shorts why dont you).

    Driving a tip takes some getting used to. You can shift down with the gas pedal and you need to get into 1st gear when you take off. In the twisties you can use manual or let it think for you. The trans will take off in 2nd gear if you let it.

    Couple of days ago I drove a 987S Tip when dealer asked me to come by and discuss specs for upcoming Cayman. I had a 2.5L 99 Boxster (99 through 03) and prior to that a 95 530i BMW. Wife had a 01 330ci and currently a G35 to give you an idea of what I've been pushing around. I found the 987S superior to the 2.5L 986 in power and engine sound. Braking was about the same but I didn't push the 987S. The steering was as communicative as the 986 but with less effort to manage the wheel. The glass rear window does not give as good a rearward vision, and my impression is that the roll bars were also more obstructing. The interior is leagues beyond my 99 in quality, although the 986 interior had more style if not substance. In all four round vents the pin that operates the slats had broken (dealer demo). The "problem" (if you can call it that) with the 986/987 is that the car is so well balanced, so dynamically perfect, that it leaves one almost bored. I used to go through a couple of "S" curves near home in the 986 at 60-70mph but it seemed like 40. The chasis always remains poised. I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade, but BMW really doesn't seem comparable to Porsche. I almost bought an E36 M3, nice engine but not a Boxster chasis by any means. Wife's 330Ci had a great engine, but rather vague steering (even for a BMW) and even with the sport suspension leaned into the turns. I have only driven one car I could honestly say felt like it was on rails through a corner and that was the Boxster. To an extent perception of performance can be more critical to enjoyment than the real thing. That's why the engine sound adds so much to the driving experience. The tip is not that much of a hindrance really. Again it's the act of shifting through the gears to add to the perception of performance. I'm probably the least talented driver on this board, but the 986/987 chasis can make even a guy like me look good in the driver's seat. If I wanted another roadster I'd get a 987S in a hearbeat.

    I also noticed the very same thing. When I do not depress the gas pedal very far, the Boxster does not drive particularly fast.

    This fact does not speak well for Porsche, since it is really nothing different from other cars.

    Test drove a tip and a manual. The tip left me cold (I'm used to driving manuals) but the manual was grins all round. You probably need more than one drive in the tip, and a longer drive to get used to the box, and so the box can get used to you (it's adaptive, so adjusts the shifting pattern to fit your driving style). Give it another chance perhaps and push the car more. RC seems to think it's not bad.

    With cars with a handling bias, you definitely need to get them in their element, like a tight and twisty road, to have most fun. In technical driving, an S4 just isn't the same. Sport sedans begin to fall apart at some point and sports cars tend to hold their composure. But of course, only if you push hard enough and enjoy the advantages of such a platform.

    I agree with Dave. The car is adequately fast, but the high degree of control it provides means the sensation of speed is often subdued. I think it's a matter of one's preferences-the Boxster is like having your own pet ninja-an efficient, stealthy machine with perfect reflexes. If you want a more pronounced sensation of speed, a car with more torque that can ocassionally shred its tires, push you into the seat and shake its tail a little on full throttle acceleration would be better.

    If you want that kind of acceleration, go get yourself a Corvette or any of the AMG models. Can't match the Porsche handling though, and don't let any foolish BMW driver tell you otherwise.

    I've never driven a Porsche with the tip, or the 987s, but I'm sure the tiptronic would dilute the driving experience, not only in speed and acceleration, but more importantly in that feeling of connection you get when driving a car like the Boxster. They all have it, even a base 986.
    I agree, the Boxster is such a complete and competent car, it sometimes masks the feeling of speed.

    My thoughts exactly. There are a lot of cars in the same price range, or less expensive than a 987s that offer a real feeling of raw power and speed. Get the Porsche on a twisty road though, and you'll probably never give those other cars a second look.

    Yeah, I wasn't interested in those cars either, but "different strokes for different folks" as they say.
