Thoughts on this order for new 987

    Hello everyone,

I am staring to think through various options. I want a very sporty Boxster, starting with Guards Red for the exterior.

I would like to do a GR version of this SY car:

    http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat...8&fpart=all

So, here is my current thinking:

Guards Red, Black Top, Black Interior
    Red Instruments
    Red Seat Belts
Red Roll Bar? Not sure I should go Red or stick with original color?
Rear console in Red if they allow ordering
    Full Leather
    Sport Seats
    Sport Shifter
    19" Carrera S Wheel
    PASM?
    Preferred Package Plus
    Chrome tail pipe

Thoughts? In particular all the Red?

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

Unless you really, really like red, and dont mind driving a car that could end up looking like a red light district, I'd be careful with red as interior color or trim color. I would pick tan or perhaps black as interior and use silver for details.
Of course it's a matter of taste, but please watch that red color.
It has a tendency of taking over the whole car. Brrrrr.

    Good luck

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

I would only go red interior with a silver or black exterior - white if you really wanna push it. With a red exterior I would do a beige as Phil suggested - the only reason I didn't go for this myself is because I felt red/beige was more for Ferraris than Porsche. If you wanna stay true to the roots - go Silver/ Terracotta

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

I recently ordered a Boxster S (for my wife) with 19" Carrera S wheels, then I read some negative reviews on that set up. Perhaps someone can help with advice on this.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

Let me clarify on interior. I am thinking Black full leather interior but with Red instruments and Red seat belts. Again, like the SY setup in the link above. Thanks for the thoughts.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

Here is the look in SY. Am thinking about this in GR. I copied this picture from another post on this site. I hope chucksweet doesn't mind.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

I agree with Dr. Phil. I think the SY combo works much better than the red. Here's a link to a car that has beige interior and red roll bars and console: Boxster S. I'm not wild about the roll bars and I think red gauge faces would put it over the top. Good luck with your choice.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

If you love red, or if you're having a mid-life crisis , then go for it.

You may even be able to get red stitching in your black leather, which would be the perfect finishing touch. Ask your dealer about the stitching.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

I think it might be OK, though I'd probably go with BLACK dials rather than red (I think the coloured dials make the car look toy-like), and I'm not too keen on the red roll-bars. I'd probably go with silver. Just my 2p worth!

    Thought about carbon trim?

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

    red roll bar looks great

    guards red rules!

    heres my boxster S (2003)

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

I think the red roll bar looks very good. On the 986, the standard roll bar was black which was invisible. The 987 roll bar is metallic gray so the contrast catches your eye but it isn't particularly pretty. I like the red belts and red console. I'd skip the red gauges. I find white or aluminum look gauges easier to read than black but I don't care for red or yellow.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

Check this 997 thread for Gary No Cal's configuration of his 997S. He had a similar premise - sporty setting - and documented his option choices in detail. Very good read if you're thinking of "theming" your Porsche.

    http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat...p;vc=1&nt=2

If you want sporty, you could add PASM and sports chrono, and drop the full leather to free some funds.

Regarding the color, red was never my favorite, so I abstain from voting. That said, the red roll bars shown in Moogle's picture fit the car well.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

OK, here is my current thinking on colors. Your comments are helpful. Also I forgot to mention I am going with the S. Will probably go with PASM.

Guards Red exterior: I have always been attracted to red porsches since the 80's (when I couldn't afford a porsche). I also like almost every other color for the boxster but red calls to me. Black does also but I have had too many black cars and get tired of the higher maintenence.

Black interior/top: good, sporting contrast to red. I think red cars with black interiors look good.

Full leather because if I am going to do it, I want to do it all the way.

Overall theme then is 3 primary colors: Red, Black, Metal/silver. This includes wheels, exhaust, brakes, etc. I like carbon fiber but I think it gets too much with the other things I have in mind.

So, I think I will go with black interior with modest metal accents.

    Black rear console.

    Silver/standard roll bars.

Red seat belts. I am seen this in person with both a black and red exterior and it looks very sporty with with a back interior.

Still not sure about Red instruments or standard color. I saw Red (and yellow) instruments as an option on the new Ferrari F430 and it looks great. If I don't go overboard on the rest of the red inside it might add a cool touch?

Sorry for rambling. This is a great site that I just found after spending most of my time on the other site (which is also very good).

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

Hi BD1 and welcome to rennteam,

I think your choice of red on black will look very sporty. Everything below is just my personal opinion, so please take it that way.

1-leave the instrument dials alone; red dials MIGHT be appropriate for an F430, but are probably over the top for a Boxster.
2-the windstop is not absolutely necessary, and the metal roll bar looks better without the plastic bits tacked onto it, so consider NOT ordering it (ordering the other preferred package components separately is about the same $ anyway)
3-consider having the roll bar painted aluminum for more contrast with the car's red exterior, but I wouldn't paint it red...someone mentioned this might make the car look too much like a toy and I agree with that
4-I think the red seat belts will look good
5-the sport chrono lump is like having a large mole right on your forehead, not a good look, regardless of the PSM and throttle map changes, so AVOID IT
6-consider the standard 18 inch wheels unless you just love one of the 19 inch styles; the distance between the brake rotor and wheels will be appropriate on the 18s (the gap's a little too large with the 19s)
7-PASM is not necessary for ride comfort; get it if you think you will do a track day once in a while, and want to firm up the suspension by pressing a button. If you plan to track A LOT, I'd avoid PASM and look for a separate coil-over kit aftermarket
8-leave the console black as you mentioned in your later post, red would be too toylike
9-you must get the sport steering wheel and chrome exhaust, but the 06 option list we had earlier shows that a sport exhaust system will be available for the boxster this year-that would be a must have in my opinion. Ask your dealer and get back to us with any info!
10-red looks best with the colored wheel crests and US spec amber side marker lenses, so don't waste $ ordering clears

Again, just my opinion, since you asked for it!

Oh, and be sure to REALLY enjoy this part of the process, because the next part, WAITING, is a real downer!

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

if you want my opinion ,i would go for the car as u speced it ,i would remove red dials and red console ,and would add all leather interior with red stitching and of course sport seats...

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

Mcdeluag: I like your suggestions but I didn't understand what you mean about a gap with 19" wheels. I do like the Carrera S wheels but they are similar to the Boxster S 18" wheels which I also like. Is there a picture somewhere of this gap?

Going with 18"s decreases the amount of room from the edge of the brake rotor to the wheel, making the brakes look bigger (and some would say more aggressive). Putting on the 19"s increases the distance one inch, effectively making the brakes seem that much smaller. I have the Carrera Classics and I'll take the wheel size - everyone knows the brakes are the real deal when they see the red paint

Going from 18" wheels to 19" wheels only increases the gap to the rotor by 1/2". I think the larger wheel/lower profile tire looks much better in spite of any wider gap. I love the Carrera Classics too.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

    Hi BD1,

I have the Classics on my 987S, and I would definitely order them again because I like their look. But the gap between the rotor and the wheel is noticeable, so it's best if you judge for yourself.

Here's a photo I took at the dealer today. I like it.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

I like the wheels. Do you know what kind they are?

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

I guess they're Champion wheels but I don't know the model number.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

red rocks man. go all the way. red exterior, red bars, red belts, red gauges (unless it's an S), but the red console is a MUST. go to your dealer and have a look, maybe at some 911's, I bet they have that combination in house with some used cars. I looked at doing it with yellow. I've seen it and it looks great. The only thing is that you might want to consider the deviated red stitching. Thats a few bucks but i would take it over pasm. its just that kewl.

if you want to save some bucks then go silver, fins look silver, bars look silver. you can then spring for pasm and floor mats.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

Did you see the new 2006 Order Guide? There are a lot more interior items that you can have painted in the exterior color. Take a look.

Re: Thoughts on this order for new 987

there's a fully speced up red 987S in Mann Island (liverpool OPC) - it looks awful - the red instruments are arely legible.

The red roll over hoops were too much too

    everyone to their own
