Keep your feet on the ground, guys...G600 with 500 HP

There is a strong rumor that Mercedes-Benz plans for 2004 a very limited production special edition G-class model due to the 25th anniversary of the G-class.
Specs: G600 with twin-turbo charged V12 engine and 500 HP.
Top speed is rumored to be limited at 210 kph but acceleration time from 0-100 kph will be below 6 seconds.

Re: Keep your feet on the ground, guys...G600 with 500 HP

    Sounds very interesting.
How is the G class to drive (ex G55) quality etc.?
Any info about pricing, how limited production is.
I was planning to buy a Cayenne Turbo, but this could be an alternative altough it doesn`t have the on road capabilities of the Cayenne.
The G55 in black looks really good though.

First at all, the G-class (especially the newer overworked one) is a better off-roader than the Cayenne, no doubt about it.
I don't have information about production numbers of the G600 but I've been told that it will be a very limited production on a "first come, first serve" basis.
But I'm pretty sure that it is possible to get a G600 built on demand if cost is no issue for you.
AMG already built a G55 K with 500 HP for testing purposes but I'm not sure that such a car went to a customer yet.

Well, regarding handling and drive feel, I bet the Cayenne Turbo is much better than the G600. The G-class feels heavier than my ML55 AMG and I'm sure that it won't change too much with the G600. The Cayenne Turbo feels like a high power limousine, the weight is "covered" pretty good by the Cayenne Turbo's suspension/steering setup.

I also bet that the Cayenne Turbo is actually slightly faster than the G600 but if I think about 800 Nm of torque in a G-class, I get wet eyes.

Finally, the price tag of the G600? Well, I can make a guess only. Expect at least 150000 Euro but even more than 200000 Euro could be possible. So yes, the Cayenne Turbo probably is the better deal.

Re: Keep your feet on the ground, guys...G600 with 500 HP

Thanks for your input on the feel of the G55.
I will test drive the G55 myself to see how the car handles.
I have driven the Cayenne Turbo before and it performed very well of course but I can`t seem to overcome the design of it.
The car will be used mainly in the city so I really don`t need the high speed performance of the Cayenne, but if I go for the G55 or G600 I will be somewhat limited in the use of the car.

Are you lot on something ?

I am going to trade in my C for this rolling concrete toilet ?

hmmmm let me think about it.

The AMG G wagon is NO offroader, ask MB, suspension not set that way.

The G wagon is THE offroader.
Even the suspension setup on the AMG version permits heavy off-roading.
Another question: do you know of any Cayenne military version? The G wagon is used in the german, austrian and italian military, I even think I saw it at swiss military.
C'mon, a year ago, most people in the US didn't even know what a G wagon is. 25 years...

It certainly is. It is extremely rugged, has an amazing suspension setup, and a terrific driveline. In fact, it is the ONLY vehicle with 3 differential locks! (front, center, rear) It also has on-the-fly low range gearing, and all kinds of traction control / ESP features. It can climb grades up to 80% and is laterally stable on slopes at something ridiculous, 54 degrees I believe.

To make a long story short, the G wagon is a very proper, if not one of the best off roaders at this time.

    Best

Re: Are you lot on something ?

    A front Diff lock too!
    Impressive!!!
I agree then, it is a real off roader, but too pricey for what's on offer IMO.
Same breed as the Defender only better I suppose.
If you want a real world, affordable off roader, nothing beats the Toy Lancruiser & Mitsu Pajero IMO.
    Fanch.

    Affordable off-roader?

How about this? Comparitively speaking, it is quite affordable. The G wagon is THE off-roader? You just need to check with Lara Croft about that. It has three locking differentials also, and a fairly short wheelbase. I am no great Jeep fan but the Rubicon is a very capable off-roader.

    Can't argue with Lara...

Didn't she drive a Landy before?

Re: Are you lot on something ?

Please remind me the brilliant military operations the German, Italian, Austrian and Swiss military conducted sinse 1945?
The G-wagen really helps this fighting forces!
I've seen Hummers with the real bullet holes and I will take it and its crews to go for a fight aver any G-class model.
To me the Cayenne is the ultimate all-weather cruiser. I don't care about it's serious off-road caracteristics!

Getting yourself killed doesn't mean to be brilliant.

BTW: I'm sure you're talking about the Humvee and not the Hummer, my friend.
I really wonder how many Hummer you saw with bullets in them.

The HMMWV is a vehicle specifically developped for military purpose, no wonder it is highly capable regarding off-roading.
The G-class has been specifically developped for rough terrain but for other purposes too. If you ever saw a Humvee drive on the german Autobahn or even on narrow streets in the Alps, you'll understand what I mean.
The Humvee is a great multi-purpose vehicle but not really something you want to take out to town at night.
I know that the Hummer has a great success among VIPs in the US but over here, it is more of a "freak's car", something special but not something you would want to drive to the theatre to.

So it is a little bit confusing comparing the Cayenne with the Humvee because the Cayenne isn't even up to the G-class'es off-road capabilities but I guess this discussion will never end.
