    tip or stick?

I wanna know which one is faster for a normal driver tip or stick?
and what are you guys gonna choose?
I heard that tip is slower 0.5s in 0-100km

    Re: tip or stick?

Tip is definitly slower (you can check the official figures on Porsche's website) but if you're gonna do 90% of city driving (which would be a shame but that's my opinion) then the tip is obviously the better choice otherwise you'll end up with your left leg twice as big as your right leg
I'd go for stick anytime. Much more involving and fun! I just love heal and toeing even at 30 km/h it's so satisfying when you get it just right! And to hear the sport exhaust blip each time you go down a gear, bliss!
Plus Flat 6 is torquey enough for you not to change gear all the time if you don't feel like it.
    Fanch.

but the N/A flat 6 is not quite torquey enough for an auto box. it's casting pearls before swine

i would go definitely for manual. and i do 95% city driving

or wait for the 997 -- i believe that porsche will offer the double clutch system.

    Re: tip or stick?

The six speed is always going to be faster in theory. In practice, the driver is the variable. One slow first to second shift can lose the half second difference. Given the "legs" that second gear has, you only need gears one and two to get to 100 mph, so there is only one shift that would come into play. Of course, you could start in second, rev it high, dump the clutch, and never shift at all.

While it may be blasphemy to even consider a slushbox in a Porsche, I did have a 98 Boxster with the 2.5 liter engine and Tip transmission prior to my 03 C2 Cab with six speed. Experience tells me that the Tip is still a great car, but takes your left leg out of the mix, reduces how much rev matching you need to do, etc. It was still a great car for autocross as the gearing down low is in my humble opinion better suited for autocross than the six speed. It's still a Porsche and still gives more smile per mile than other cars. If the Tip makes sense due to lots of hill or city driving, then go for it.

    Re: tip or stick?

    Well said Brian
    I agree.
    Fanch.

    Re: tip or stick?

IMO it's a sports car and should have manual transmission like a true sports car.

With that said, I have a Tip and I love it, sorta.

I had a Manual in my last car and hated it when I kept getting stuck in traffic, it was a pain. On the open road it was great, you really felt in control of the car. Manual also helped keep me awake when tired since I had to Shift.

The things I like about Tip:
    - Much easier to drive in Traffic
    - I'm able to Floor the pedal and shift w/o releasing the gas.
    - Wife likes = Happy = me happy

Things I'm not to fond of w/Tip:
    - Smooth downshifting is taking me longer to learn with Tip.
    - I wish you could shift with the stick as well as the steering wheel.
    - When in Auto Mode it goes to 5th gear too fast.

Either way Manual or Tip you really can't go wrong. It's still a Porsche and an awesome drive!

    Re: tip or stick?

I personally choose Tip only on the Turbo not the rest of the 911.

The Tip feed back and shifting speed in 996 Turbo is phenomenal.

    Both!

In the absence of the DSG box that the 997 will hopefully come with I ended up with Tip on my C4S.

It's my one and only car. I live in the city. Shop for groceries in it. And drive the hell out of it when I can get out and find twisty roads. You can still rev match with the tip, it's just more difficult to do than with stick.

If I lived out in the 'burbs or in the country I would drive stick, no question.

    Makes sense to me.
I enjoy my automatic tranny when driving in the city but on lonesome country roads, I wish I had stick.

    Re: tip or stick?

I vote for stick just because its more fun to drive, gives a full sports car feel, upshifting and downshifting.
