    Cayenne sales failure?

Here's a short summary of an article in a dutch carmagazine by an american carjournalist named Howard Walker about the US sales succes of the Cayenne.. Feeding the scepticism among our die-hard porsche sports car enthusiasts..

How can you drive a porsche dealer crazy or make his salesmen tremble? One word: CAYENNE.
Remembering how hard the Porsche officers were shouting last march that their suv had been sold out for the rest of the year ? The opposite is true. You want proof? Look at autotrader.com and you'll find over 500 brandnew Cayenne being offered.. The Porsche Exchange a dealer from Highland Park, Illinois has 51 Cayennes on its website for sale, Don Rosen Porsche dealer from Philedelphia has 30 unsold Cayenne Ss waiting for you.
Now the unthinkable happens: dealers are going to give huge rebates on new or almost new cars. For example: Paramount Porsche (Hickory North Carolina) lately offered an S for U$ 54.450 which meant 4000 below listprice. The Autobahn Group (Texas) had 20 Cayenne S in stock offering some of them at 53.999.

If this is really true then Porsche will get a huge problem shifting those 18000 Cayenne anually in the USA. I hope not and prefer seeing them make a decent profit on the Cayenne so they can keep making those wonderfull rear-engined Elfers !.

    Re: Cayenne sales failure?

I believe it, there over 20 unsold at a dealer by me. On the other hand, the similar-looking VW Touareg is selling like crazy here.

    Re: Cayenne sales failure?

I think the Cayenne has three "problems":
    1. it is a "re-badged" and more sporty VW Touareg
    2. it is no sports car as Porsche might have suggested during development
    3. it is too expensive, especially the Turbo

Now the good parts of the Cayenne:
it is a very good SUV, especially the Turbo but also the V8 are very powerful and nicely engineered SUVs.
This is why I don't like to see the Cayenne as a failure, it isn't.
Porsche just made the mistake to advertise it next to their sports cars, making a lot of customers believe they buy a 911 SUV.
Another problem is design. It doesn't look really bad, I got used to it but it doesn't look spectacular either and the VW Touareg actually looks better. The Cayenne gives me the feeling of a Touareg which has been forced to implement Porsche design elements. It doesn't look like a design from one piece, it looks strange. Especially the rear looks boring but the front looks too 911-wannabee.

Don't get me wrong, guys: I wanted to buy a Cayenne Turbo and the only reason I didn't was that my dealer didn't want to take my 996 Turbo in. So yes, I like the Cayenne but I think that Porsche didn't finish the development job.
It needs less weight, it needs more style and it definetely needs more charisma to keep up with Porsche's sports car products. Emotion is the key word.

The Cayenne is no sports car!

It looks a lot better when it is in your garage!

But you are certainly correct about the Cayenne not being a sports car. I am not sure how that got started. I guess there is a difference between saying a vehicle like the Cayenne can compare favorably to some sports cars and saying it is a sports car. To me the greater accomplishment is making a truly off-road capable SUV that is at least competent on-road. That has never been done before. Not even close.

I do think the Cayenne will suffer somewhat because of the VW association but I think everyone should reassess this in light of how other manufactures SUV's are perceived. Ron wouldn't be caught dead in a Chevrolet Malibu but a Chevrolet Suburban is a different story. Few members of this board would drive a Toyota Avalon or Camry but I'll bet many would find the Land Cruiser acceptable. Same for an Expedition vs. a Crown Vic. SUV's are often judged on their own merits and don't carry along the status baggage from the sedan lines. Rebadged Touareg? Now that's not fair. Everyone knows Porsche did all the heavy lifting on development of this platform and their version of it was introduced first.

Sales are bad? Could be, I don't know. They are not bad where I live but I don't know about other parts of the country. I do know there is a big difference between the 2003 and 2004 models in terms of discounting. Where I live the 2003's were discounted significantly but the 2004's are selling at MSRP.

    Re: Cayenne sales failure?

I think rc's view is right; the market is there but the key point IMO is its design (besides its price) it's not homogeneous and far from characteristic nor charming. Now I'm wondering if Porsche is taking this board critisicm serious, maybe we could put a representative in their board/ aufsichtsrad

FRANKFURT, Aug 1 (Reuters) - German sportscar maker Porsche PSHG_p.DE said on Friday it sold 2,696 vehicles in the United States and Canada in July, a rise of nine percent year-on-year.
The company said sales of its new Cayenne sports utility vehicle drove this growth, with 1,437 vehicles sold in July.

Sales of its classic 911 and Boxster sportscars fell 49 percent from last July's record level to 1,259 vehicles, it said in a statement.

The company said sales in North America rose eight percent to 24,748 vehicles in its business year to July 31.
