    Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

    Hi Folks,
Am seriosly considering purchasing a used Boxster S! Appreciate any advice that the folks on this board can provide on the following:

    1) Has anyone noticed whether blue, cocoa, or grey top color heats inside of car less than black when parked outdoors? We live in Texas.

    2) Has anyone lowered the left foot dead rest several inches. I am tall and even with the seat back all the way and seat back vertical, my left leg is up off of the seat (unsupported) when resting on the dead rest. I haven't been able to check what was behind the dead rest, hopefully it isn't something important like the steering or front left tire.

    Thanks in advance!

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

Hi Grease. Congratulations on your first post. I live in south Florida and have a yellow/black Boxster. While I can't speak to whether or not the other color tops keep the car cooler (I doubt it), the car cools down very quickly once you start them up and turn on the a/c. There's really not that much air to cool in a Boxster. As far as leg room, have you tried raising the seat a bit? That might help you. Not sure if you can move the dead pedal.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

    Hi Grease,

I live in Houston and have a black top. It's well insulated and as Low Polar states, there's only a small volume for the AC to cool, so the black top isn't a problem.

Just so you know, other posters in other threads have avoided the lighter colors because they tend to be harder to maintain, appearance-wise. Maybe you can search the forum for their comments.

    Good luck!

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

My salesman recommended I stay away from a light color top for the reasons stated by Mcdelaug. I guess light means gray, since the other colors are dark. My next door neighbor has a frequent visitor with a silver/gray/gray Boxster. The colors go well together but the roof always looks dingy.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

I live in Southern California and was very much interested in the stone grey top and interior for the very purpose of avoiding the heat that the black surfaces would absorb.

After lots of investigation, I'm going with a black top and black interior. I've seen grey tops just arrived at the dealership, with no test drives on the car, and the creases and folds of the tops already were showing dirt.

The heat difference is not that dramatic, but the maintainence burden for the grey top is.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

    Welcome to Rennteam.

I'd probably rather go for a light colored interior (e.g. grey) than a light colored top for heat prevention. Personally I drive a tripleblack 987S with no cooling problems whatsoever. That said, we're rarely subjected to temperatures beyond the 60s Fahrenheit here in the UK . Before, I've driven a black Audi TT with a black top and grey leather interior in North Carolina where they are currently in the 100s, and that wasn't a problem either (no significant bottom-burn factor.. possibly due to the grey seat color?).

Don't know anything about modifying the footrest, sorry.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

I agree with Ente. The interior color choice seems to make a bigger impact on the heat factor than the top color choice. This is especially true if you ever park the car with the top down. Black can be scorching!

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

Wow! Six responses to my questions!

OK. I got the point on light color top maintenance. What about a blue top? Is blue that much worse than black?

Agree with many folks' preference as towards lighter colored upholstery. Can't understand why so many folks in Texas order convertibles with black interiors. Maybe they don't mind wearing asbestos underwear:-)

As far as seat height suggestion, I must say that I didn't raise seat above bottom position on any of my road tests, partially in fear of being to close to interference between head and top, but I definitely will try that out and report back.

BTW, my observation on modifying passenger compartment sheet metal was based upon also driving a 2005 Boxster S as comparison which had sufficient room to left foot dead rest and appeared to only be able to get it through my above stated means; i.e. they can't move the sheetmetal in back of driver's seat back 2+ inches towards engine, seat back appears to be as thick as on earlier year models, so they had to fix by making mods to dead rest and possibly pedal location.

    Best regards,
    grease

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

The blue top is a pretty dark blue and should be fine. Only the stone grey top is what I would consider a "maintenance risk" in terms of showing dirt.

The reason I went with a black interior is, IMO, the grey interior didn't look as good as the black. Maybe the "full leather" would look classy in grey, but for my personal taste, I thought the black vinyl dash looked fine but the grey vinyl looked less rich.

You have to see it in person and make the subjective decision yourself. There are many very satisfied owners with grey interiors.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

Grease, My advice would be to get a Covercraft Sunbrella car cover in light gray and use it when the car is clean and dry. It will help a great deal, regardless of what color you choose.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

I live in So Cal and rarely have the top up. I have full leather Grey interior and Black top. Find a big difference in the Grey vs the Black interior of my Audi TT which is a coupe so even without the sun beating down directly on the seats the black burns the arse off me.....the Grey just warms me nicely!

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

I have blue top and blue interior. It gets plenty hot with that combination. I wouldn't be fool enough to get black in AZ that is just silly.

Now that is what we wanted to do originally.. have two roadsters - Boxster and TT. We chickened out though due to all the family members complaining that we never picked them up from the airport because we didn't have a "proper" 4/5 seater car, and sold the TT to get a Skoda instead

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

I live in south Florida and drive a Boxster with a black top and interior. When the car is parked, the top is up and the seats don't get that hot. When the top is down, I'm driving it and the seats don't get that hot.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

    Thanks for more info!

So either Black or Blue top appears OK.

From other feedback I still have a preference for Grey or maybe Beige interior? Anyone have comments on Beige?

Was hoping for more comments on my observations wrt dead rest and leg room? From the quiet tall folks reading this thread

    Best regards,
    grease

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

I love the sand beige, definitely over the grey, but some people like different things. They're a similar level of 'lightness', but I felt the sand was a bit 'warmer'. The grey seemed more sterile and artificial to me. Both are fairly neutral colours that should match a wide range of exterior colours.

    Can't help with the height problem I'm afraid - I'm a short-arse!

Slightly off-topic comment - the more I drive, the more I'm glad I went for the 'smooth' leather sports steering wheel. Makes a difference.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

Another comment I'd add is be careful if you are combining three colors for the exterior metal, top and interior. You'll run into a greater risk of a clashing color scheme.

I also think generally that lighter interior colors need to be full leather. IOW, blue car, blue top, sand interior in full leather will look stunning, but a sand interior in vinyl, not nearly so.

If you don't want to afford the full leather, then my vote is to stay with a black interior.

You have to look at the color combinations on the car in person before you make a final decision.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

I have three colours going on, Orient Red/Black top/Grey int and think it looks good, but of course some combos are a bit much. At the end of the day it's your $$ so go with your hearts desire. Check this out for most combos but if you can see the real thing do.

Re: Newbie: Two Boxster S Qustions

You can view the color combinations on the Porsche website by "building a car." Atlas looks much lighter for some reason but the others are close.

Yeah, that was the plan here too when I got Audi All Road last year, for that exact same reason, but I'm just too attached to the TT, though it doesn't get driven much these days and insurance due again....I really must/should sell it....tomorrow!
