People in SoCal with Clear Bra...

Please tell me your experience with your Clear bra install.

1.Who/What company) did the install? And where are they located?
2.How do you like the job they did?
3.What brand of film do they use?
    4.Coverage?
5.Where does the install take place? (Your garage or Installer's shop)
6Price? (If you are comfortable disclosing)

    Thanks

    2. Excellent job. Very competent installer. I never felt fear while he was working on my new car.
    3. They can use all three major brands including 3M and Avery. I can't remember what the other brand is, but it is the one I chose.
    4. I had the complete front job that goes across the fenders and across the hood at about 1/3 way up. Also lights & mirrors.
    5. My garage. I think they will go just about anywhere in Orange County.
    6. About $750 - $800

I wasn't going to get a clear bra since I felt that chips were just a fact of life. But, I got my first chip on the way home from the dealer with my new car. I got my second when I returned to the dealer to buy touch up paint. I didn't drive it again until I got the bra installed.

At page 244 of the October 2004 version of the 997 manual it states:
" Warning! ... Attach no coverings (e.g. films, "stone guards") in the area of the headlights."

The manual repeats this warning two pages later, @ 246: "Risk of damage to headlights due to abrasion and excessive temperatures. Do not fix any coverings (e.g. "stone guards" or films) in the area of the headlights."

Are you sure you're comfortable with the clear bra on the headlights?

Phil... I am the exact same way.

I had mine installed yesterday and it looks great. although i did not read the part about the headlights so i might get that removed.

Mine was done in my garage for about 3 hours and $790.00 I think thats all i can contribute since I'm in the bay Area.

    Good Luck

You can see the line if you look closely at the fender.

From this shot you cannot see the bra.

I don't know.......It is hard to imagine that a thin piece of plastic film could have much of an effect on the headlights. I wouldn't think the plastic headlight lens would breathe and the film would keep them from breathing. Maybe someone else has experience with this.

Re: People in SoCal with Clear Bra...

The stupid manual is full of stuff written by lawyers. I can't believe the number of disclaimers and warnings!

I think damage from a small rock (requiring replacement) is more likely than damage from a thin layer of plastic (most of the heat is radiated through the film anyway). So I've kept it. Others might disagree. There are no data.

Every wonder just WHY lawyers say these things for their clients? Think that it may just be because the issue has already come up and the client wants to protect itself?

As you say, there's no data on which you base your decision. So then the wise thing is to disregard Porsche's twice-written directions? Good luck!

Or the lawyers client wants to sell more replacement headlight lens when they get broken by rocks.

    Thanks.

My point is that the warnings are more for the clients (Porsche) than they are for us. I'm sure there are people who abide by every single "rule" in the book - but I doubt there are many.... Here are some impractical examples in the manual:
1)"Do not lean against the inside of the doors"
    2) "Give your passenger all the information in this chapter"
    3) "Do not carry unsecured luggage or objects in the passenger compartment"
    etc. etc.
And for these people, driving one MPH over the limit, changing to clears, or forgoing the front plates are all criminal acts.

Within reason, the rest of us can think for ourselves. And deal with the consequences.

Re: People in SoCal with Clear Bra...

    Tooner,

Sorry for the follow up but i get my 997S in two weeks and live in NorCal and I'm thinking about a clear bra. Can you answer a few questions for me.

    1. Who did you use in the bay area? Were they competent?
    2. What clear bra did you choose and are you satisfied?
    3. Do you feel the protection is necessary?
    4. Pricing if you feel comfortable?

    Thanks!

Re: People in SoCal with Clear Bra...

say the clear bra was on the hood of a front mounted engine doesn't that produce more heat than the head lamps?

It's not necessarily (only) a heat problem. Headlight lenses are made of plastics these days, not glass. I suspect that the advice in the manual is due to a risk of the adhesive on the clear film leaving traces on the clear lens, if the bra should ever be removed.

You couldn't use solvents or agressive cleaners on the plastic like you could on glass, and I'm betting those lenses are not cheap to replace.

I'm from the bay area and used Premiere Mobile Group (search archive here and rennlist). They were very professional, and did a great job. They installed a basic set in 3 hours in my garage. Price is just shy of 800$.
    Worth it - no question.

Re: People in SoCal with Clear Bra...

I don't understand that you like this bra so much. Please explain me.

We don't even really know that here around. I had a talk with a car care specialist. A guy sold his Porsche and when they removed the bra they removed the paint as well. They had to repaint the hood. I prefer to have a clear nice looking car without a border with the risk that I have to repaint the front in three or four years.

The problem is - You don't have a "clear nice looking car" if you're in an area where your car gets stone chips. You have quite the opposite actually. You have a damaged car.

I have no problem whatsover with a border line across the hood. Basically because it's not damage. The thought of doing a repaint "in three or four years"(costing more than a bra & hurting resale) when it's so easy to avoid doesn't make sense to me. And all that time between repaints letting the car's front get trashed by chips and dents is not the way I like to go anymore. I've seen 2 year old cars that look like crap because the front was so beat up. Having a barely noticeable line across the hood and fenders is a very small price to pay to keep the front end looking trashed (imo of course) If you think the border line looks worse then a damaged up front then obviously the film is not for you. For me I used to cringe everytime I used to hear pebbles hitting the front of my cars. It used to be like - "Great, how messed up is my front now and I hope it's not the hood again".

And it's bad enough on a Porsche. You should see what Ferrari's look like without the film.

Anyone thats had their paint come off from the film either put the film down on an after factory fresh paint job or didn't use the right type of film. I've never seen this happen and if it did happen often 3M could never get away with selling so much product.

Re: People in SoCal with Clear Bra...

btw: You already have the film on your car on the rear quarter and the way Porsche did it, it looks a whole lot worse then on the front where the majority of it is tucked into panels.

Re: People in SoCal with Clear Bra...

If you have a clear bra and you get hit by a stone does:

    1) the stone just bounce off the bra causing no damage to bra or paint.

    2) chip the bra but not the paint?

    Thanks

My experience with my clear bra is that most rocks just bounce off the film since it is more "rubbery" than paint and can absorb things hitting it better than paint. A large rock can damage the film, but the damage is hard to see and looks far better than what it would look like if the same object had hit unprotected paint. I got two noticable rock dings on my unprotected paint during the first three days I owned my car. In the four months since I have had the clear bra I have not noticed any additional damage.

Re: People in SoCal with Clear Bra...

Was on the fence on the clear bar, was thinking of a regular black bra on my black S. After seeing several cars with the clear bra I became interested but the clincher was a small stone chip in the front after my 3rd day, had only 250 miles on it, I was bummed. I got it through the dealer. Paid $1200 so sounds like I overpaid but since it was dealer installed you know where I am going with any problems.
