997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

I want to ask you , what you are thinking about the 997 gear shifter.
I prefer the 996's one and I hope that Porsche could produce others as an optional equipment.
I don't like it , and I don't feel it like a sport gear shifter. do you?
    996

    997

    997

    Another question...
Have you seen the '5th Gear' test about 997 Carrera S ?
The gear shifter is taken off when Jeremy Clarson is driving the car...

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

Its UGLY! and its not one of those things that looks better in real life, its still fugly in real life

BTW, I saw the Top Gear test too and tried myself pulling the nob upwards but didn't come off in my case.

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

Looks ugly b/c it is from Audi.
The switch gear and the tranny is from Audi.
Looks like Audi and feels like Audi.
If you have an A4 or S4 you will feel the resmblence.

I believe the gearbox in the 997 is made by the Japanese company Aisin. Does Audi uses an Aisin gearbox?

    Phil

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

The tranny is from Aisin (japanese).

The gear knob is that way not because its "Audi", its because it was designed to resemble the pre-996 gear knobs, which predates any current Audi, so Audi has nothing to do with it.

I bet everyone who gets into a 997 tries to pull off the gear nob since everybody saw topgear...

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

I guess it goes without saying , when I test drove a 997S few weeks ago I tried it too but never came off

I think everybody's is trying to pull the knob up when they get into the 997.... I did the same when I came into the car...

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

hey guys, a CHAINSAW will do the trick...

worked for me when i tried it recently--

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

First of all , excuse me if someone disagree with me.
I don't see the sporty look of that knob, looks like a limousine's gear shifter

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

I don't love it, but after driving it a few times I thought it felt very comftrable in my hand. I like the feel of it and I think the look will grow on me. But hey to each his own, if anyone changes theres post some pics.

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

Porsche is trying to get away from the "rising loaf of bread" look of the 996 interiors.

That's why the simple geometric shapes orientation has made a full appearance in the 997 shift knob.

In a few months I bet you'll think it's just fine and will forget all about the 996 look.

    rising loaf of bread???

the doors on the 996 are so much better, those sexy curves, get me every time

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

i thought the 996 shifter was good, but i like the 997's because it is comfortable and is pretty subtle and sharp, the 996 was maybe trying to hard to be seen

Yeah, Funny huh? I seem to remember reading that it in a European car mag review.

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

In Spain we used to say that "for different likes, we have colours".... or something like that....

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

I like the 997 shifter over the 996. I could be biased since the reason I like the 997 car is that it hints back to the 993 which is a better looking car than both the 997 or 996. My bias also stems from the fact that I dislike the interior and exterior of the 996. Just my personal preference.

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

Thats whay this board is really cool... I just walked to my car tried to pull the heck out of my knob...hehehe...

It did not get off I'm mean come off or get pulled out whuteveRR..

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

I wasn't crazy about the looks so I had a TechArt shifter knob installed. However, it came loose. I was panicky the day it happened, I didn't know whether I broke something or not. Now that the stock knob is back on and everything is buttoned up tight I JUST LOVE MY STOCK GEAR KNOB. LOL !

I don't love it's looks but feel it's definately more comfortable then my 996 TT knob. (the standard, leather and alum. one)

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

At first, I thought the 997 shifter wasn't the prettiest, but I've come to like it because it feels so great. Form does follow function. BTW, I drove an 04 GT3 for the first time the other day -- a lot of fun -- and though I loved many things about the car as a whole, the interior really stood out as dated. The pattern printed on the shifter looked very crude. I much prefer the 997 interior, including the shifter.

When the dealer installed my Porsche Sport Shifter, it took every technician in the place pulling on the shifter knob over a period of over an hour and a half to remove the knob.

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

I just thought I should add that I tried to pull it off aswell.

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

No problem : I always do hide it in my right hand...

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

I like the 996 shifter's shape and design much better than the 997. I can see though that the shape of the 997 is still very functional but I honestly don't see it in anything but a Japanese import. The 997's interior feels more "put together" than the 996. (However it reminds me of my Cayenne's interior)

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

I hide mine with underwear. LOL (yeah, I wish)!

Re: 997 Gear shifter looks ugly ???

My wife loves the 997 knob, says it's definitely more comfortable than 996. Might try her on the short shifter.

    LOL LOL
