Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

    So, here we go...

drove the Radical SR3 on the Grand Prix Nürburgring track last Friday.
guys, it's a blast!!! and that's just an euphemism...

it was a standard SR 3, 1.3 liter Hayabusa engine, 205 hp, 500kg.

the seating position is like in my race-gokart, you sit on the floor, but quite comfortably, two adults fit well (i'm 1.87 tall), but u need to take the steering wheel off to get in. steering wheel is small and handy, and the shift stick is about 5cm away from it on the same height.
off we go, the engine roars and and i get on the racetrack; its amazing, I see the Enzo in front of me from below!! acceleration is very fast, but not furious, but gearchanges are amazing! you dont have to press the clutch, just blip with the throttle and the gears go in so quickly, I realized in that instant how ridiculously slow the gearchanges in my turbo feel. and you dont even have to take the hand off the steering wheel to shift, it's grand!!
the corner comes, i brake and actually need to release the brake again to get to the bend!! dang, this car brakes so brutally, it's unbelievable. I had a drive with the instructor who showed where the braking points were, and its just amazing... you could outgun every other car on the brakes, i guess the gt3 cups on the track were only faster in the bends cause of the slicks and because of the fact that i didnt have the guts/skill to go all the way. there were a couple of brutally fast cars on the track, including 962, silk cut jag and a mclaren. these cars just drove past me on the straight and in the bends !! what an unbelievable athmosphere...
the grip of the radical is immense, it was with a street setup and street tires, but still better than that of all other sportscars out there, including the ferrari challenge stradale.

the moral of the story is that i got infected by that racecar virus and the consequences are pretty dire:
I realized that having a gt3 to drive around the racetrack is quite useless if a radical shows up behind you and you've gotta give way... and I also very unfortunately realized that driving around with my turbo (i did 700 km nonstop from milan to frankfurt on sunday) is not really that satisfying in the end: you are and feel never as quick as in the radical (if you know the film le mans you know what I mean, cause thats how i felt that day!!) and if you wanna drive a long stretch fast and comfortably its no comparison against an rs6 or even my x5.
guess I'll get myself a 997 convertible or an old targa.... so if you look for a good and cheap turbo send me a PM! and dont forget to try a Radical whenever you get a chance to...

    cheers

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

Must of been a great experience, I'm a big fan of Radical but never got a chance to drive one.

As for the Turbo, if you think it may be boring, then I can't imagine how you would feel on a RS5 or X5! drive the radical on the track and the turbo on the street, its never going to be as fast as a Radical but you can't "realistically" drive the Radical on the streets so thats what the Turbo is for ... the best of both worlds
BTW have you ever tried sportbikes?

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

Nice report! Yeah, driving a lightweight track car makes a modern Porsche feel like a real luxo-cruiser at the track! Aside from the Radical there are some other similar options that are actually street legal in the US:

    1. Caterham CSR
    2. Ultima GTR
    3. Ariel Atom (just got US distributor)
    4. Lotus Elise with 400hp turbo www.forcedfed.com
    5. Noble M400 www.1gracing.com
    6. Beck Porsche 904 replica (1722 lbs with 3.6L Porsche motor) http://www.autoatlanta.com/Life/beckvisitsaa.html

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

The radical is cool as hell. Sounds like you had a blast in it at the Ring.

For a dual purpose street and track car the Beck 904 with a post 95.5 993 engine would be a lot of fun. You get the thrills, speed and reliability at a decent price. You can
fit practically any choice of Porsche motors, brakes and transmissions that you want to it and it has none of the current Porsche fat boy handling dynamics.

His Beck Spyders sell well and have a good reputation for quality.

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

Check this. Ariel Atom 0-100-0 mph = 10,88 secs !!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that looks like quite a rush (300hp supercharged Honda motor). I think I would opt for the somewhat more tame 245hp naturally aspirated version - should still be scary fast with about 1,100 lbs

I agree! And don't forget timeless beauty and mid-engined handling...

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

if you remember my post I just got the new bmw k1200r, 165 bhp on a naked, its scary... and yes, the rs6 is uch more boring than the tt but you get out after 5 hours still fresh as a rose... (and i still kinda love my tt...)

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

that beck 904 is beautiful indeed.. whats the cost over there? couldnt find it on the web. do they get imported to europe at all?
btw: radical now competes at the gtp weekend. so for u guys in europe there is a good chance to see them in action against the porsches. and for u guys in the states i believe there are a couple of racetracks out there who own them.

    good nite

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

Thanks for sharing your impressions. A few of my Elise compadres just came back from trying out the Radicals and they had a blast.

It drives home an important point:
Horses for courses and purpose built cars. A vehicle designed especially for the track will be superior, for the most part, than a road car. For practical purposes, we often track our road cars. The next best thing is a road car with a heavy track bias, like those Grant listed.

These track day specials are expensive given their singularity of purpose, but they sure blow the doors of a $150k Porsche.

Beck hasnt released any formal pricing yet. But in his last interview he said that it would sell for roughly 65K USD.

The Beck is classified as a kit car in the US, but it is not as crude as a DIY car kit. Essentially its a updated 904 that you source your own engine and transmission for.

Used Porsche parts are plentiful and relatively inexpensive in the US. Beck has a good name quality wise here from his other two models, a 550 Spyder clone and a Lister clone.

Studebaker bought the Beck 904 rights last year. But then Studebaker stalled on it and went bankrupt this year.

When we will see a Beck 904 available is uncertain at this time. Hopefully he can get the 904 project back under his control. When he does, I will order one to save myself from building another 914-6 GT clone.

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

There is also a radical SR8 if I remember correctly it's 2 hayabusa engines, so it's a 2.3litre engine redlining at 10000rpm or something, now that's fun!

what about the donkervoort? i know it's pretty ugly, but it goes 15 seconds quicker than a carrera GT around the nurburgring!

The 904 is rumored to cost $50k with everything except motor and transmission (a small item ). I understand that a 993 motor and gearbox can be bought used in good condition for around $10k-$12k. Then there's install fee, so it's in the neighborhood of $65k. Remember that this car weighs less than 1,800 lbs with >300hp (no smog stuff). For a bit more money, you can drop in a 993TT motor for crazy power (I think this is overkill, but it's not difficult).

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

correct, the SR8 basically has two 'merged' hayabusa engines in the chassis of the SR3. the cars look the same, except for the higher downforce aerodynamics of the SR8. it sounds great but i didnt get to drive it. apparently its quite a handful and i guess that with 370hp that thing goes almost 300kmh (weight is only up 60 kg on SR3).
    check the engine out here...

@ Grant and Jim, thanks for the 904 advices, lets see if it ever comes out..

for a ride in the Radical check this out this little video:

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

and btw sport auto apparently will do a supertest of the SR3 this summer and Radical will again try to beat the Nürburgring record with the SR8 in September. target is a time below 7 mins !! Anja Wassertheurer from Sportauto was there right before me to get an impression...

(i really wanna see that take-off at Flugplatz!!!!)

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

The US distributor for the Radical is in southern California and I often see them at Laguna Seca track days. You do have to watch for them on the track because they are low and fast.

Under 7 min would be fantastic! I think the Radical should get little or no air at Flugplatz, since it has so much downforce at high speeds...

Re: Forget about the rest.. go Radical !!

I think the SR8 will have no trouble at all breaking the 7min barrier, the SR3Turbo had no truoble posting a lap of 7:19 and it was done in one and only flying lap with no testing.
The SR8 has more and improved downforce, a much better power delivery from the more powerful N/A V8 engine, and only 60kg more weight...
