    Re: M5 V10 dyno: 530.9 hp!!!

Don't exaggerate! The printout says 530.7 hp!!!

    Re: M5 V10 dyno: 530.9 hp!!!

    Wow, that's impressive!

    Re: M5 V10 dyno: 530.9 hp!!!

Now if they could get the weight of that fat pig down under 4000 pounds, they'd have something.

Then it wouldn't be the four door commuter /" pick up the relatives at the airport" hauler that I need when I'm not in the 996/997 Turbo. You are confusing a fast sedan with a pure sportscar - where the 3600 lb Turbo is not exactly svelte ( Turbo Cab Tip is about 4000 lbs , too )!Wait until we see the weight of the Panamera -

    Re: M5 V10 dyno: 530.9 hp!!!

what was the claimed factory hp? 510 right? i'm not very familiar with the m5

A 545i is a good for picking up people at the airport. An M5 shouldn't have to weigh over 4000 lbs. A TT Porsche is overweight too.

    Re: M5 V10 dyno: 530.9 hp!!!

the engine weighs enough, and does all of the other crap that they put into it (the generous leather seats and all of the computer equipment). Moreover, I'm sure that the 20 inch wheels aren't doing it any favors either. The M5 is what it is supposed to be. I wouldn't mind seeing an M5CSL (that would be VERY intersting). Take out that horrible I drive, replace those wheels with a lighter wheel, get rid of the crap .. and that car would be , well, super.

    Re: M5 V10 dyno: 530.9 hp!!!

or take the m5 engine and put it in the m3CSL

    Re: M5 V10 dyno: 530.9 hp!!!

M3 with an M5 engine you say? It's so crazy that I'm sure a TUNER is going to do it as soon as the donor car and engines free up. I remember Alpina or someone in Germany did that with the Z4 and the 3 series coupe--- it was beautiful. The Z4 was simply amazing, the 3 series coupe was hell on wheels. Actually, there was a video about it. The 3 series with the M5 motor actually turned out to be the HARDEST to drive.

think it was Hamann... with the old M5 engine. they seem to put it into the whole range, think they've converted a 1-series!

I thought it was Compact, Sports, Lightweight... which, I suppose still wouldn't apply to the M5. Should be M5 FFU; Fast, Fat, Ugly.

    Re: M5 V10 dyno: 530.9 hp!!!

this engine MUST go in a super/sports car.....Z8?

Show me a mid size luxury V8 version German sedan (A6/E class/5 series )that doesn't weigh at least as much a Porsche 911 Turbo . The demographics of the $90K sports sedan buyer requires all the heavy " luxe" stuff piled on- as it should be . If you want lightweight sports car- look at a Radical -type vehicle and NOTHING legally drivable on a US street - even the so called " supercars" whose brakes and pads and tires would be toast after a few laps driven in anger due to their not weighing 1500 lbs .

I'm not sure why you asked that question. I didn't say a mid size luxury V8 version German sedan shouldn't way as much as a 911 Turbo. In fact, look up the weight of a 911 Turbo. That's what the M5 should weigh. The Turbo is a couple hundred pounds heavier than it needs to be also. A new S500 Benz, certainly not mid size or high performance, is 4170 pounds, about the same as the new M5.

More power requires weighty ancillaries to balance speed and heat generated . M5 has bigger wheels, tires, heavier duty brakes , bigger heavier radiators , heavier motor than a 525. To reduce the weight 300 lbs over the latter would require stripping down to look like a Lotus Elise's interior. I don't think there's a business case for such a 4 door car which would be noisy, no AC, rough ride but be even more expensive due to required carbon fiber panels assuming it passes crash standards which it won't as it wasn't engineered for these to begin with ( even if it were, imagine insurance premiums and $30K front bumpers like on a Carrera GT). You are living in the pre ABS, pre 30 airbags, pre safety nanny , pre electronic entertainment gizmo 1970s , when my first car weighed just 1700 lbs .
Like I said - those few who would want this type of M5 wouldn't be happy anyway driven aggressively and in anger and often on a racetrack .National dealership councils would be pissed because they want large sales volume , luxe to attract the wealthy pampered demographic and options to generate profits and complex electronics that break down to generate warranty service business, lol . They are not in it for our pleasure first , I can assure you.

I did a bit of research to refresh my memory and I guess I'm expecting too much from BMW. I was originally using the E55 for a frame of reference but I forgot that car is over 4000 pounds too. For some reason I was thinking it was much less. I used to have a 1959 Mini that weighed 1300 pounds while the new Mini is 2300 pounds.

I think the new mini is around 2,700 lbs...
