    Questions on 997 Turbo

Hi Guys Would appreciate info if you have it on the following questions:

    1. When will the order guides be available for the 997 turbo?
    2. when is production starting on them?
    3. Would you buy the first batch of 997 turbos? would they have teething problems usually the first year? im asking because i was burned once before on the 2002 BMW 745Li, i dont plan on going through the same ordeal of constant problems all over.

    4. Anyone got a good pic of how it will look like? the spy photos i have seen so far dont really show much.

    Thanks,

    Fireo

    Hey Fireo,

I noticed that nobody "in-the-know" (since these "spies" are apparently anonymous) responded to your 997T info. requests, so I thought I'd reply so you wouldn't feel "left out" on the forum.

Since it's all rumour and speculation re. when the 997T will be LAUNCHED, it follows that the dates of production and order guide availability are also speculative. The consensus on rennteam has been a mid-2006 release (anywhere from spring to fall) for the 997TT, likely as a "2007" model, with 997Tcab possibly later in 2006 or even early 2007, and maybe not until late 2007 or 2008 for the TS (and ? TSCab). I first wondered if they would pedestalize it at Frankfurt this September, although senior rennteamers have suggested spring of 2006 at Geneva. Recently, a thread alluded to Edmunds.com saying the 997TT would show at Frankfurt in September, and if so would support a spring of 2006 release with order guides available from the end of this year to late winter of 2006. There are "spy" pics of 997T/TCab test mules (some referenced here on the forum) and Edmunds.com states the 997 side intakes will be cut more slim (like the test mules have shown) vs. the 996T, but the word from this board was that cosmetically, the 997T will look the same as a 996T, except for the 997 nose/headlight layout (even down to rear spoiler and side intakes).

I plan to wait for the 997TCab or TSCab (?spring 2007 or 2008), so the 997T set-up will have a track record for me to go by. Since I couldn't wait 2 years for the 997TCabs to come out, I bought a 2005 996TSCab this past month to "hold me over," and it's a blast to drive, so the 997T I suspect will be worth the wait.

It seems like Wiedeking, et.al. have their act together, so I'm betting the car will come out earlier than rumoured (and I wouldn't be shocked if the TCab is out by late summer 2006). Besides, I bet it will be worth the wait, even if, as feared, the car is "underpowered" with less than 500HP. Check out earlier threads/pics on the forum here or go to www.germancarfans.com or www.onlyporsche.net, or many others.

    Re: Questions on 997 Turbo

I really think it would be nicer if it looks more different than the 996T.... Porsche should do a "mini CGT" like ferrari done with the F430...just my 2cents..

This "sounds" like a good idea but than they would need to call it something other than Carera Turbo. AS it is it must look like the Carrera. What do you all think?

    Re: Questions on 997 Turbo

mine was one of the first 996 turbo and didnt miss a beat.
you ahve to think that the 997 is only an evolution and not a totally new car. the two 'new' technologies I'm aware of and which could be source of problems (not that I know of any) are : the PDK (it's never been used on such a powerful car) and the VGTs (a first on fuel cars). I would take the risk.

    cheers

I don't believe they ever officially call it the "Carrera Turbo" (it's "Turbo" or "Turbo S" on the car's tail), but I agree a major cosmetic change could stir additional interest. I wonder too (I think we bandied this idea before on the forum) if they might ever consider a V8 or V10 Turbo with a mid-engine layout powerplant, but that would be more extreme than going from air-cooled to water-cooled ala 993 to 996. They probably would end 911 production before they did that, but couldn't they continue traditional 911 production and make the mid-engine (perhaps just in front of the rear axle, not in front of the driver) 8- or 10-cylinder turbo or NA set-up a separate "option" or model variant (with your CGT nose exterior)?

I see your point. I guess my view was that the Turbo is a 911 turbo and the 911 has a traditional shape; Ferrari on the other hand has evolutions as well but they call them different models and thus have more freedom to make more radical changes, just look at all the controversy when the 996 came out and the real effect it had on resale value of 996 as compared to 993s.
