After witnessing the angst over the Z06 doing 7:43

on the large Ring track, I began to wonder what type of buyer the Z06 is directed at. I am still of the opinion it is the US Porsche buyer who wants outstanding performance. The hook in this case is the price. Anyone in the market to buy a GT3 or even a GT2 would be insane not to seriously consider this car.

Though I believe the 997 TT will be an outstanding performer, I doubt Z06 sales will impact it greatly. The TT still has a back seat albeit a joke and probably a better car to drive around town or work. However, that leads to the next question which is if that is the reason why one is buying a TT then isn't it a stupid financial decision?

Many cars would fulfill that function better and more comfortably. I guess it must be the idea of driving a Porsche Turbo which is the hook. To my knowledge most Porsche owners deny that the name has anything to do with their purchasing decision. Right:, and pigs fly and G.W. Bush can complete a sentence.

Re: After witnessing the angst over the Z06 doing 7:43

You could ask yourself this: Why dont you just sell your F430 and instead of getting a spider, simply ordered a Vette?
You would save a lot of money, get an equally fast car and not least be patriotic and support the american automotive industry.

I mean, if not even an American would consider a Vette, who the heck would?

And to answer your Q about Porsche owners purcahsing decision:
Of course the brand has a LOT to do with what many of us buy. Absolutely.
If it didn't we'd all be driving Hyundais and Trans Ams....

That's just one of the reasons why I'd never even consider owning a Vette.
The brand has some values that I cant identify with.

Nick, lemme help you here on this most popular issue.

The car is being built to satisy Bob Lutz, VP of Product
at GM who is also the same guy who pushed through the Viper at Chrysler. It fits with his product strategy of selling Cadillacs and Corvettes at BMW and Porsche Prices. However
wonderful that the engines are, the shifters, interiors and steering racks wont change much until 2007, when the full effect of his tenure impacts the product content life cycles.

It is his stated goal to build performance cars that equal Porsches and Ferraris, so he's after your money also! Now weather they can please customer satisfaction expectations in that price range is another subject. Mr Goodwrench can't change over to Mr. Four Seasons Hospitality center over night.

Porsche Turbo owners like owning a Turbo, its not a crime!

All of these cars have their own peculiar feel. I like them all.

Dr. Phil, A vette for Nick might not cost him anything.

Because of the his ability to purchase a F430 Coupe at suggested retail price, then resell that at substantially over retail and repeat that if desired on his incoming
Corn coloured F430 Spyder,he could get a Z06 for simply filling out Ferrari sales paperwork twice.

If you have a place in line at a Ferrari dealership in the USA,getting a new Corvette Z06 for free is just one of the customer perks.

Who cares about automotive "patriotism" when it comes to buying? Porsche sales jumped off in the US for exactly the opposite reason in the 50's. We knew the Germans had the better weapons, gear and tanks in WW2, so it was no big leap to assume that the cars from one of their best tank designers would be really good. You are too young and too far away to know US postwar consumer product mentality, but if someone had opened up a Hermann Goering cookware shop, the lines would have stretched for miles.

I understand your "brand" issues with the Corvette. Im sure its the staff car of choice for the Copenhagen Chapter of the Hells Angels. But over here it isnt, and the financial and education profiles of new Corvette buyers is the same as for new Boxster buyers in the US.

Re: After witnessing the angst over the Z06 doing 7:43

I dont know why someone who was looking at both cars wouldnt strongly consider the vette. I think I heard it has a warranty for track use.

I would unquestionably take one over a regular 911, in terms of tech and engineering.

I like 911's ALOT, but am beginning to grow wary of how much work Porsche is putting into their cars and the ultra high prices they go for.

The new Z06 seems like an all out assault of technology and engineering while Porsche seems to get by with doing as little work as possible. I could be wrong and will admit to being so if someone else knows better. But look at the new 997, it seems lightly updated yet goes for huge prices.

Heck, the tiny Cayman is 60 grand.

...but oddly enough there have been many on this forum who have stated that Porsche's performance is what draws them AND not the badge. (I never believed them either)
If that were the case we'd all just go out there and buy a cheap import with some mods.
I just can't figure out why P-car owners would feel so threatened by these ring times. I'm not. I feel like I may even be getting a better car from Porsche for it down the line.

Re: After witnessing the angst over the Z06 doing 7:43

It's very true that many Porsche owners deny that they purchasse their cars for the name.

MANY of them aren't being honest. There is just so much history and heritage behind the badge, it's hard to ignore.

Personally, I like Corvettes. I think they allow an average person to experience relatively high performance (or supercar performance if you look at the Z06). No, they aren't nearly as precise as current Porsches when it comes to the driving experience, and the interior and exterior details aren't so well executed, but they're still great cars.

Right now, it looks a bit like Porsche has lost its edge performance wise in comparison with the new Z. I want to see the new 997 GT3 and Turbo before deciding on this though.
