Re: Boxster S experience of a former 996 Turbo owner...

If the new Boxster S had the extra 40 HP that RC wants, I would have one now instead of my Lotus Elise. I decided to wait in hopes that Porsche would get the message about the power level. After running the Elise a bit, I also would prefer a lighter less luxurious Boxster version ala clubsport or Speedster!!!

If I keep the Elise however, I would be less concerned about the power level and might even skip the S version, as the Boxster would be more of a runabout to me rather than my dedicated sportscar. On the other hand, if thats what I want I might end up looking for a previously loved 993 cab as I was looking into previously.

The base model perception is funny IMO. At the 996 introduction, there was no S model.

Although you probably werent directing that specifically at me - I meant a base price 997 as in one with no options at all. ie 987S loaded vs 997 no options is a pointless price comparison, just as a 986S loaded vs a 996 with no options is.

Re: Boxster S experience of a former 996 Turbo owner...

    Hi Martin,
No, it wasn't directed at you, but I should probably apologize to Amir for being so rude. Didn't come out right. Perhaps I misinterpreted his post.

I can understand someone wanting a Boxster S over the base 997 because they'd rather have more ammenities. But personally I wouldn't discriminate the 997 because its a base model, while the Boxster S is the top of its line. I prefer a minimum of options, so I'd probably take a bare Boxster S over a well optioned Boxster, or a bare 997S over a well optioned 997. And even a 997 over a well optioned 987S if I prefered the driving experience of the 997.

The Boxster S is a terrific car but sadly its image precedes it. You could have a 340 hp engine in it and you will still get the same reaction often from 911 owners; that the car is not a true Porsche.

Very true, Nick. But, the world was ever thus.

I used to get the same reaction from 911 pilots to my 914/6-2.8. The greatest bits of fun I had were crawling all over them in the corners and then blowing past them on the straights!

People that spend serious money on their cars can be soooo touchy

Re: Boxster S experience of a former 996 Turbo owner...

I think that it is Porsche's own fault that the Boxster has that "entry-level", "housewife/girlie" Porsche image.
They always tried not to challenge the 911 during development, in my opinion a huge mistake because we're actually dealing with two different cars.

A Boxster S with 320 HP would be perfect. I wouldn't add more power to it because it would be difficult for customers to make use of this extra power without doing a 360* spin. But 320 HP and the Tiptronic would make the hell of a sporty roadster. Yes, I like the Tiptronic very much on the Boxster S, it is very relaxing and even from standstill, the immediate acceleration is incredible.

BTW: I'm missing the extra 30-40 HP in the upper rev range above 3500 rpm. This is when the exhaust/engine makes an incredible noise but the speed increase doesn't really match with that race car-like sound. Disappointing.

Re: Boxster S experience of a former 996 Turbo owner...

    RC,

Regarding all the postivie comments you've made about the 987s Tip's responsiveness, is it due to the fact that you have the the sports crono option? If so, when it is off, is the Tip still sporty enough?

360 spins are okay RC. You just step on the gas again. It's the 180's that leave you in trouble.

Re: Boxster S experience of a former 996 Turbo owner...

how much extra hp could some one get out of a good set of aftermarket headers ,intake, exhaust system,..(non warranty voiding products)? is 35hp achievable?

Re: Boxster S experience of a former 996 Turbo owner...

Yeah - does anyone know the exact spec of the SpeedArt power kit for 987?

Good question, I'm curious about getting the tip as well.

Re: Boxster S experience of a former 996 Turbo owner...

When I took delivery of my 986 in May of 1999 the typical lamentation offered was "if only the Boxster had 280-300hp".
