    Re: Porsche History???

    BC997J,

Check out amazon.com - they have a good selection of books on the history of Porsche. You could also find a pretty good selection at your local library or book store.

    Have you read this?

    Re: Porsche History???

Read half of the first volume and it is very detailed and interesting. It's like a novel you start it you can't put it down.

    Re: Porsche History???

Check this from the UK Porsche website.
    http://www3.uk.porsche.com/english/gbr/company/history/default.htm

    Re: Porsche History???

Porsche.com and history is a oxymoron. Porsches history is rather ugly and sordid until 1960, then they pretty much
    re invented themselves.

    Re: Porsche History???

Thanks Guys.... gonna have a look asap..

    Re: Porsche History???

.. except for the fact that every unit is converted to lb-ft and inches andwhateveryounon-standardfolkshave , so for an European reader it's sometimes difficult and confusing when you eg. remember the figures in SI-format.

Otherwise I highly recommend this book also.

    Re: Porsche History???

Porsche history is rather ugly and sordid pre 1960?

    Huh?

For road cars, the 356A (including the legendary Speedster) and 550A Spyder are considered all time greats.

Racing history: Are you sure you want to go there?

1955 Le Mans. Porsche 550's were 4, 5 and 6 overall with HALF displacement compared to their competitors.

1956 Le Mans. Porsche 550 (5 overall) beat a Mike Hawthorn drive Jaguar D-Type (6 overall).

1958 Le Mans. Porsche RS and RSK's came in 3, 4 and 5 overall beating the legendary Ferrari 250 and 500 Testarossas which had twice the displacement and V-12s.

Many people rightfully consider Porsche history to be at its finest pre 1960. The company had little resources and little engines, yet were giant killers. To me, that is a much 'cooler' history than the 1970's when 917's just dominated with money and horsepower.

    Re: Porsche History???

Some of the strange, sordid and ugly bits from Porsche history.....

Ferry Sr was the chauffer driving Archduke Franz Ferdinand when he was assassinated in Sarajevo.

The racing era before WW2 was exploited by both Hitler and Mussolini for propaganda reasons. Porsche didn't exactly say no, he jumped right into it.

In WW2, the Porsche Werks wasn't just bombed by the Allies to prevent RMS leaks in the future. They designed and built the Schwimmerwagon for the SS there and also designed tanks and components.

Remember the Beatle? That started out as a party sponsored Porsche project for German workers to buy by purchasing coupons. They never got their cars. However, the plant built for them, Autostadt (it became Wolfsburg), was used to produce military vehicles. It was managed by Porsche Sr and because of the use of slave labor there, Porsche Sr was imprisoned by the French for being a war criminal after WW2.

After the war, when Alfred Krupp was released from prison in 1951, Porsche Jr. used that as a PR photo opportunity to market his cars to the German wealthy. Porsche gave him his ride home from Prison in a new Porsche. Alfred Krupp was the most infamous and wealthiest German military industrialist of the second world war.

If you read Ferry's biography he bluntly states that he preferred designing and building tanks instead of cars and that the cars were just to keep the company going. They still design tanks and other armored vehicles to this day.

The family and company is as unique as their products.

    Re: Porsche History???

I figured that in your first post that the "sordid" pre-1960 history you mentioned had little to do with cars and racing, and much more to do with pre and post-war nastiness. Of course, the early history is the most interesting stuff, but you won't find Porsche.com saying boo about it, obviously.

    Re: Porsche History???

Would 1530 pages in three volumes be enough for you? Porsche historian, Karl Ludvigsen's _Excellence was Expected_. Probably can get it for us$130 new. ALL you'll ever need. Copiously illustrated

Some of the recent Porsche and Piech family stuff is actually quite hilarious.

The German tabloids refer to the Porsche family as the "Bavarian Hillbilly's" because of some very "awkward" divorces, marriages and affairs between the Porsche and Piech families involving their maids and their cousins.

On a purely automotive note, Ferry Jr liked his cars green with green leather interiors. A combination you will seldom
see ordered by any Porsche customer.
