    Exhaust matters

I 'd like to put an exhaust system on my 997S but i have decided no to install PSE because there is absolutely no gain in matters of performance or weight. The soundtrack is fine but that's all..

I am thinking of Gemballa full kit (sport manifolds, catalists, exhaust system, double tailpipes}. It' a little pricey (around 5000 euros) but they claim a performance gain of +23hp/20Nm.

If eventually Power Kit won't be available as a retrofit, don't you think that sounds good?

    Any thoughts?

    Re: Exhaust matters

How do you know the "tunner claims" are reliable? practically the same HP as the factory powerkit with all its changes but from just manifolds, cats & exhaust of a tunner? ... we have a saying here "not everything that shines is gold", I would exercise caution Zoltan.
Besides, no exhaust is going to give any significant gains on the 997S, its the other mods (manifold, chips, etc) that will contribute to any gains in the 997S.

    Re: Exhaust matters

I will believe it when I see it. Gem. needs to prove that claim. Sounds like total BS to me.

    Re: Exhaust matters

I doubt you'll get gains. However, some people have confirmed mild increases in hp with exhausts. I think it would be great if you had your car dyno'd right before and right after the install.

I think if a powerkit is available, it seems to be the best option for more hp. The X51 option looks awesome. However, I think you're right about PSE. I don't see the point. I don't think sport exhaust systems should go on and off. To me that equals complexity and weight for a silly feature. A Sport exhaust should be "on" all the time. It would be easy to create a few systems and label them by dB so everyone can get the loudness they want. Of course optimize them so they make as much hp as possible and keep the weight down. I've heard a pair of Porsche mufflers weighs 50 pounds. That's ridiculous when the aftermarket can supply comparable systems (at least no hp loss) for 25 pounds.

    Re: Exhaust matters

Various german car magazines, especially SPORT AUTO, tested tuned 997 Carrera S, usually just exhaust/manifolds/ECU mods, resulting in around 380-385 HP.
None of the tested cars actually had a much better performance, I think the 0-125 mph performance improved by around 1 second. And funny enough: most kits weren't technically approved for street usage in Germany, which suggests that they weren't quite legal regarding emissions and/or noise levels.

What I actually try to say: Porsche does some substantial mods on the 997 Carrera S engine to gain 26 HP.
Look at the engine mods involved and you'll be impressed.
The reason? The 997 Carrera S engine is a normally aspirated engine and tuning such engines for more power but at the same time reliability, is difficult.

So in my opinion, do yourself a favor and save your money. If you want more power, wait for the 997 GT3 or Turbo.
Or just get the powerkit when (and if) available for retrofit but it won't be a bargain I'm afraid.

And finally: a power gain of 25 HP or more WITHOUT an engine ECU mod is almost impossible. 10 HP or so are more likely, resulting in NO real performance gain at all.

And regarding "additional" weight: you must be kidding.
95% of the drivers out there can't take advantage of less than 50 kg weight reduction. And I'm talking about the track because for street use, saving a few kg doesn't make ANY sense at all. Unless you're loosing unsprung weight but I guess the exhaust system doesn't really help that much in achieving that.

    Re: Exhaust matters

    RC,

how about an ECU mod on a 996 turbo with tubi free flow exhaust and air filter, claim of +50hp and claim very "safe" to the motor ??? what do you think

    Re: Exhaust matters

I'm glad I spoke to you guys here before installing an after-market exhaust. It was something I was so close to doing. I changed my mind when I read everyones spot-on posts about them vs. PSE.

Now I couldn't be happier with the PSE. Spent about 6 hours in the car today and still chuckle everytime I go through a tunnel or ride along a solid concrete highway median. It purrs

    Thanks~

I can feel the difference when a 50 kg person gets in my car. Also another point is that saving 20 kg on the exhaust doesn't sound like much to some (although it does to me), many times to save 100 kg (very worthwhile in my book) it has to be done in 20 kg chunks all around the car. For example save 20 kg on the exhaust, switch to proper non-power sports seats to save 30 kg, different wheels will save 15 kg, swap hood for carbon fiber for 10 kg and finally swap the rear decklid for another 10 kg. That adds to 85 kg or 187 pounds for a faster and more responsive car. In my opinion it should have came that way from the factory or at least had a 10k option to come that way. IMHO that amount of weight reduction might be more bang for your 10k than the powerkit.

I think you are both correct. The weight reduction does noticeably alter performance, but the difference when measured carefully as with a lap time at a track will nonetheless be minimal.

I definitely notice slower acceleration with a passenger.

I agree that if you really want to notice a BIG difference, and you want better track times, then get the GT3 or Turbo. I'd feel cheated after lots of expense and trouble to only effect a subtle difference (plus - no worries about RMS!)

yeah Me too Stradale! Tunnels and High medians have never been more fun!

Oh yes, fully agree with you guys, PSE rules! Bad and mean! None of the aftermarket exhausts I have heard sound anything like PSE (the proper Porsche howl) and I would never switch. A few HP more (as claimed by the aftermarket manufacturers) will not make much (if any) noticable difference. Plus, increased HP at higher revs usually comes with decreased torque at lower revs due to back pressure issues.
